I bought tickets to the Sydney Film Festival.
Films I will be seeing include:
The Myth (San wa) (2005 - Hong Kong) - Stanley Tong directs Jackie Chan in an Indiana Jones style role. Sounds like a winning combination!
Kidulthood (2006 - UK) - Written by Noel "Mickey from Doctor Who" Clarke, this is described as "A day in the life of a group of troubled 15-year-olds growing up in west London".
Pusher I (1996 - Denmark) - The first in the Danish Pusher trilogy, about (strangely enough) a drug pusher.
Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (2006 - Hong Kong) - Ronny Yu directs Jet Li in what he claims will be his last martial arts film!
God on My Side (2006 - Australia) - Documentary by Australian comedian/chat show host Andrew Denton. It is about the Texas National Religious Broadcaster Convention, the "business" of god in America and God in politics. So far up my alley, I may as well move there.
Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005 - Canada) - Another documentary about heavy metal culture. Director/anthropologist Sam Dunn's previous film was on the plight of the Guatemalan refugees, so it should be interesting!
Bob Le Flambeur (1955 - France) - AKA
Bob the Gambler. Part of a Jean-Pierre Melville retrospective at this year's festival, this film was remade as The Good Thief. Who can resist a heist film?
Le Samouraï (1967 - France) - AKA
The Godson. About a perfectionist hitman trying to scheme his way out of having been spotted.
Edmond (2005 - USA) - I couldn't resist a film starring William H. Macy. Especially written by William H. Macy. My only American selection in the festival. Nothing against American films, but most American films are released here - even indie ones - one way or another. I'm using the festival as an opportunity to see stuff I might not otherwise see in a cinema.
The Descent (2005 - UK) - From the makers of Dog Soliders. I HAD to have a horror film in there! Looking forward to it, seems like an appropriate way to end the festival.
Might see a few others in there if we take a mind to it, but we got a deal for 10 films (saving $60 off the individual ticket price this way).
