I recently watched Mary Poppins to take our new surround sound system and TV out for a spin... not exactly the first movie that comes to mind for that, I know, but it's what everyone wanted to watch. It wasn't the first time I've seen the 40th Anniversary Edition, but this was one of my favorite watchings of it I've ever had. I guess it was the first time I've gotten to see it in the ideal setting and mood since it's been released, and it was really easy to appreciate it fully.
Last night I watched the Platinum Edition of Aladdin on DVD. I had bought it last month bcause I remember seeing it in theaters and it's one of my fond memories. Aladdin is a good movie, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I keep thinking Disney movies need to be longer... Some of the other reasons I might not have liked it that much are that I found Jasmine a bit annoying and I didn't like Aladdin himself that much. But the Genie was great, of course! And the magic effects like smoke and sparkles made a fantastic show.
I also watched the music videos and the version of A Whole New World that Jessica Simpson and her husband, Nick, sing, was not that great.

I watched Melody Time for the first time today. Not that bad, but not very good. Beautiful animation and colors, but most of the songs were off and not very good. Accept for the Bumble song there, Bumble Boogie... And "Blame it On the Samba" was a very interesting musical number too. The "Trees" sequence is astonishing though, the only moment that comes close to achieving that Fantasia magic. I also really loved the animation for the entire "Once Upon a Wintertime" sequence. That was just beautiful, and really ahead of it's time- at least in the moment when the ice was cracking, that was amazing! Too bad the stories and songs weren't very good at all. Oh yeah, the part in the "Little Toot" part where Toot was banished and the Andrews' sisters are singing something like "bad..." every time he starts to get close to one of those dinghies that have lights on them, that was really cool too.
Evil Genie Jafar wrote:Following Lazario's comment, decided to watch the Great Mouse Detective. I don't know why, but I can't never fully enjoy this movie. I always get bored or start doing something else.
This does seem to me to be the most Don Bluth-esque of Disney's animated features. And those movies bore me, not the Disney ones. But I love this movie a lot. The one thing I never liked was the fat cat, Felicia. That's one ugly freaking cat. It also seems to be saying that morbidly obese animals are villainous, which is simply not the case. And, has a rat ever been portrayed as a 'good' character in a Disney movie? I used to own rats as pets awhile back and it always bugged me that they portrayed that rat in Lady and the Tramp as villainous too, just because it was a rat. They couldn't make it rabid or anything, foam it at the mouth just a little? Though of course Dawson was a little pudgy, so it's okay. So was the Queen of England, the English rodent population I mean. But I really like this movie a lot, it's anything but boring. I like that Basil was actually really smart, Olivia was never annoying. There's a lot to like about it, which is why I like it... I don't want to watch it again now just to come up with reasons. But it was definitely good. I guess it was mostly the culmination of a lot of little things.
Well, as I said, I hope to like it more eventually as I see those things going on for it.
Besides, up until last night I didn't think much of The Black Cauldron and now you see.
..... and right now, finished Peter Pan. I always either smile or laugh at the Captain Hook scenes. As established in the review of the movie, this one is just plain fun. From the very beginning you can't take your eyes off the screen.
The Fox and the Hound: I just watched it to see if it was as bad as Lazario said and I have to agree it was pretty bad. Not because of the hunting reasons that Lazario hates, but because the movie was so boring. The story just never got exciting and the animation was pretty weak compared to other Disney movie. How anyone could say Bambi is dull but love this is beyond me! 3/10
Sky High: Too boring for me. Kurt Russel was fun to watch and there were good gags on "Fantastic Four" and "Spider-Man" but that's about it. Plus Patrick Warburton gets ripped again! When will this guy get his own movie???
I just remembered I did watch a Disney movie and that was Eloise at the Plaza! Oh my gosh, I enjoyed watching the movie as well as the making of feature they added! (Then again, it did have Julie Andrews!)
My first thought was that, "Oh gosh, an annoying six-year-old..." but she was such a good actress! Eloise is funny! And I absolutely adored, adored, adored how she played matchmaker! It was a nice film. Too bad Eloise at Christmas isn't available until December...

Thank God someone else has eyes. This one makes me really ashamed of the critics, who loved it to bits just because it was different than the Disney movies from the 1970s. A lot of Disney's 80s movies were different than the 70s, this one is boring to the point of making the tears that can come from yawning, bleed painfully from the eye sockets and burn the cheeks as they slowly inch downward. Too many people just say, it has such a heartwarming story... If you focus only on the story, you might as well be praising a book! This is a film.
And how can everyone so adamently ignore my hunting comments? They're very important to consider, they have a lot to do with the film's quality and the narrative Disney's using to tell this story and complete disregard for the same people who felt so strongly for Bambi to survive. There are scenes in this movie that completely go against what Disney used to stand for and should be sending a better message to viewers.
I totally forgot how amazing this movie is. It actually is a really powerful film. Amazing soundtrack too. Too bad, i think, that it's overlooked by all the other great disney titles out there. It deserves more attention
I find that this movie is too weird coming out next to The Little Mermaid. In fact, it looks like a movie that should have come before it.
The movie has very nice animation, a sidekick that is more terrifying that the villain, found that it needed at least a song (not sung by the characters but offscreen), and as the review says it's obvious that they needed to work more on the story since they stretched too much the movie with scenes that don't make sense.
I agree. The Rescuers Down Under should have been released before TLM, if possible. I didn't think there was anything really wrong with the story..although it didn't seem to involve Bernard and Bianca as much as the original. One or two songs would have been nice.
Anywho, I just got done watching Peter Pan, an appropriate film to watch before my first day of school.
I don't know why but even tough this one has such a better story than Jafar's and I could tell the very first time I watched it back in the day, now I end up thinking I like it less.
The things I like: the longer running time, the Xena/ Hercules feeling to it (it does feel like one of those series' adventures) and of course the Genie (altough in most times it feels over the top).
The things I dislike:
1.the colors are weird (I don't even know how to express the feeling but they don't look right; and most times the scenes are too dark, which shouldn't be bad, except for the fact the colors used are also dark).
2. altough thank God Jasmine looks much better this time around, the color used in the Sultan was wrong (he looks almost golden). And they should have paid more attention to the 40 thieves. I know they weren't going to draw them all and that we were suppose to get to know those few, at least in the 3 times they show up in the movie they could have drawn more even if they'd look all alike.
3. even tough I'm not a fan of weddings in Disney movies (and in general), the main reason for this movie was to solve that, and in the end they got married in less than 5 seconds and it was so badly animated that you could barely see anything.
4. Songs: "There's a party here in Agrabah" had promise but it got interrupted so many times it just lost the whole rythm. And please tell me WTH happened with the reprise of "Arabian Nights"? Not only they wasted most of it on the "carpet part" but also they could have added more lyrics to it and not just end it with like 10 seconds of "Arabian Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiights"
5. and... I find it very insulting that this movie that came after The Lion King 2 had such horrible animation
.... it may seem after all that, that I hate the movie. I don't. But if you take in consideration these faults, I think you might see Return of Jafar better. Especially having no excuses for that given the fact of TLK2, that ROJ was such a huge success and having Robin Williams back. (You'd think they'd put more effort into this)
I just watched Bambi Platinum Edition. This was my first viewing of Bambi..ever! lol I got it because I am collecting Platinum Editions and I wanted to add that one. I liked the first one. Also The Fox and the Hound is actually my favorite Disney movie. I know, I know the "hunting" lol, but I watched this a lot when I was a kid so I have fond memories with it. Thus I like it. I haven't seen the movies in years. I hope it comes to Platinum Edition. That would make my day!
There actually were a few parts of Fox and the Hound that I liked. The scene where the widow drops Todd off in the forest and especially the bit where she's driving back to her house, it almost tricks you into believing you can feel that breeze / wind. All the songs in this movie actually seemed much more like poems, but the one in this scene "Goodbye May Seem Forever" was the better.
