Well, yeah, but that doesn't count, it's not a DAC. Didn't "Bolt" come with a Digital Copy, though? I never bought it, so I can't recall.

Really, I just prefer a DVD version. I can make a digital copy for my iPod from that, and it's nice for if I want to bring a copy of a Blu-ray to a friend's house who lacks the player. The digital copy at best goes on my iPod or at worst does nothing at all.

I really like the cover art. It's what I was hoping for, something simple yet "watercolorly". I just hope they fix the clouds.

Well, yes. Of course.

But the studios don't want to give people excuses to rip DVDs or Blu-rays. Realistically it's too late now for DVD, the cat is out of the bag and anyone can easily find the tools for ripping - but for Blu-ray I think they're hoping if they give out digital copies, there's no-need for people to seek out means to rip a blu-ray, as they are providing legal copies for other uses.

Personally, I hope they succeed in slowing Blu-ray ripping. While I don't believe every ripped DVD is a lost sale, it obviously must have been impacting on sales - anyone could rent a disc and copy it and pass on copies too.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Sky Syndrome wrote:My only complaints about the cover is Dumbo having pink in his ears like your stereotypical Easter bunny and pink on the soles of his feet. Apparently, a main character in its film accurate colors plastered on a film case is a turn off!
I just watched 'Dumbo' and the color of his inner ear and soles of his feet fluctuate between pink and gray throughout the film. So pink ears and pink soles are correct, but so are gray ears and gray soles and any combination of the two. It really depends on which shot of the movie you are looking at.

If Disney cares to give them a restoration... Which they don't...

Yeah, both of those releases will be DVD only. I'm sure they will hit Blu-Ray in a few years when Disney starts to run out of classics to release on Blu-Ray. But since Blu-Ray only accounts for about 10% of the market share of home video, Disney is only releasing big titles in HD that are guaranteed to make money. Disney was quick to release these films to DVD because they didn't need extensive restorations, but they do for HD.

It's a bummer, because as much as I'd like a nice restored anamorphic "Black Cauldron", there's no way I'm buying it on DVD only to buy it again in two years on Blu-ray. I'll stick with the crappy GC version until it's Blu.

I don't get why they're still doing DVD-only releases at all. I'm a huge DVD fan, but I don't like this. After all, they're so intent on promoting Blu. I don't like it when they skimp on our bonus features, but I also feel bad for those that have made the switch when they neglect to put out HD versions of their films. Why can't we have both, Disney? Maybe then we'd all get along better!

Because Disney still wants the money of those who don't use Blu, but not enough to actually put much effort into it.

Studios are pushing Blu-Ray so hard because the DVD sales have been shrinking at a rate of about 5% per year since 2006, but Blu-Ray sales have been doubling each year and they make more money per unit with Blu-Ray. At the moment, Blu-Ray accounts for around 10% of the home video market and with most releases, the market share of Blu-Ray sales is closer to 7%. With big blockbusters, it can be almost 30%, so by giving consumers more reason to buy the Blu-Ray (exclusive bonus features, bonus copies on DVD, etc...) they are guaranteeing themselves more money per unit in a rapidly changing industry.

I read somewhere that good restorations can cost upwards of a million dollars. In order to release these older films on Blu-Ray, they have to do an extensive restoration or there really is no point. It will look better than it would on DVD, but it would still be a crummy picture quality. And if Disney doesn't have faith in these films to sell exponentially well, then they have little reason to invest the money to put them on Blu-Ray. So for now, the only old films that are getting the Blu treatment are films that have wide appeal, meaning Diamond Editions and bigger classics like Dumbo (and maybe Alice in Wonderland). The reason that Mary Poppins didn't get a Blu-Ray release is because the 45th Anniversary Edition was a last minute rushed release to help promote the national tour of the stage show.

Disney made a big mistake when DVD was released, which was committing to releasing at least 1 DAC a month through the Gold Collection. Studies show that about 60% of a films home video sales come from the first week and by releasing them so fast, consumers weren't able to keep up with them. That's part of the reason that most of the GC releases have been rereleased. In addition, many of them, including The Black Cauldron, had bad picture quality and pointless bonus features. They are being very careful with Blu-Ray, so they are putting a larger period of time between releases (part of the reason that Fantasia is coming in May instead of the typical March) and really focusing on titles that are guaranteed to sell well. I have a feeling that when Blu-Ray accounts for 30% of the market, which will probably be in about 2 years at the rate it's growing in this economy, we will start to see the less widely-cherished classics released in HD.

Huh. Wow, good analysis, goofystitch!
I already have a plan worked out:
I have come to terms with the fact that DVD is not long for this world. But I don't want those little Blu-Ray boxes in my DVD collection. So... when my format finally kicks the bucket, I'll buy every movie that already exists in its previous version on Amazon. (If SotS isn't on DVD at this point, I may give into the temptation to bootleg.) Once I've attained them, I save up for the Blu-Ray player, and start a Blu collection, not replacing any of my DVDs. All films made before a certain time period will be frozen as my "DVD collection," while any newer films made after that time will be my updatable, normal "Blu collection."
Until that time comes, however, I'll stick with my DVDs. :D And yes, I know it's bizzare, but I'm not happy with life unless I have a plan! Even if its a crazy plan, I plan it anyway!
