dvdjunkie wrote:And those of you who say you don't get it because you think that it is edited, or you are waiting for a two-disc set are just not true Disney collectors at all. To the best of my knowledge, having been a projectionist for over 30 years, I can tell you that "Melody Time" is not edited for DVD. Yes, it was edited for VHS, but the DVD version is the complete theatrical version. Make Mine Music is actually an extended version on DVD and there are no edits. There are additions, yes, but no edits.

Not all Disney movies will be given the two-disc treatment. And if you missed it the first time around, it may not come around for some time. And what do you mean waiting for a better version. You want them to remake all of these classics?? I don't think so.
According to the reviews on this site, the R1 discs of Saludos Amigos and Melody Time had cigarette smoking digitally removed from certain scenes, and Make Mine Music had the entire "The Martins and the Coys" segment removed.

As far as waiting for better discs, many of the Gold Collection titles (according to the reviews) have poor picture and sound quality, along with little or no extras actually relating to the movie. These problems, along with some high prices on some of the DVDs, are part of my reasoning to wait for these. If a nice 2-disc version is never released, I may eventually get them, but I have many other DVDs that I want to purchase. Eventually, these discs will be re-released, even if it is on BluRay/HDVD. Presumably, the sound and picture quality will be improved, even if extras are still lacking.

I choose to not own any copies of anything with Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and the Silly Symphonies, etc. stuff like that. I prefer fables, storybook, and fairytale classics. Like the Lion King is supposed to be a fable, Winnie the Pooh is a storybook classic, and the Little Mermaid is a fairytale classic.

I meant that the animation quality is, compared to other Disney films, not as good as it should be. But the '70s was a bad time for Disney, IMO.

I know I'm probably going to be killed for saying this, but I don't like THE LION KING. Went to see it at the movies when it first came out (like every other kid and his dog). Just doesn't appeal to me. Didn't appeal to me then and I still can't see the attraction.

Also, my Disney collection does not contain A BUG'S LIFE, TOY STORY, MONSTERS INC., or THE INCREDIBLES. Don't like those full-blown Pixar movies either.
I'm just valentine candy and boxing-gloves!

Why? Because they're my favorites artistically. I'm holding out for special editions with extra extras. Here's hoping they follow through! :)

What I meant by cartoon was that they're the type of stuff that you would see on television (well, maybe not Fantasia)...they're compilations of cartoons put into one movie. I prefer movies with a full storyline.

That pretty much summed it up for me.

The Silly Symphonies & a few of the character shorts also contain fables, storybook and fairytale classics.

Wrong, they are theatrical shorts. They are compiliations of shorts not cartoons. Anything animated is a cartoon.

That's basically what I meant. By cartoon I meant an animated short, like the type you would see on television.

Sorry if I've offended you..

Some may have glazed over it, but the title of the thread is: What animated classics do you deliberately not own?

"Missed it," "Have to pick it up" or "bought it" don't really fit in.

As for me I'd like to own all of the animated classics except for:

The Black Cauldron - the reviews were just TOO BAD for this one and I've never seen it. Maybe if I rented it and really liked it I would pick it up but most likely I'll never buy it.
Fantasia 2000- never really had an interest. I consider the original Fantasia a part of Disney history and would buy it if it made itself available to me, but would not watch it a lot. Don't have much of an interest in 2000.

I'm holding off on these in hopes of future 2 Disc versions:
Hercules
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Lilo & Stitch

Since I am still new to collecting Disney DVDs I'll only list the movies that I will probably never buy...

1) Saludos Amigos - just dont like it
2) The Three Caballeros - just dont like it
3) Make Mine Music - ok, but not worth the money
4) Fun & Fancy Free - just dont like it
5) Melody Time - edited, dont really like any of the shorts

6) The Lion King - I MIGHT buy it when its re-released if it is packed with a 1 1/2 SE, just didnt care for it that much.

Okay, I just spent the last few hours going through my Disney animation collection on DVD and VHS. I need to know what exactly it is you think has been edited out of some of these releases. I watched "Melody Time" which is one of my favorite Disney animated feature films and I have the early release on LaserDisc, RCA Video Disc, VHS, the re-release on VHS and the DVD of this particular title. If they have anything edited, you couldn't prove it by me. I also watched "Make Mine Music" and the only difference I found was the added 8 plus minutes on the DVD that doesn't exist on the VHS or RCA VideoDisc.

As far as those I purposely avoided owning besides all the direct-to-DVD or direct-to-Video releases I will not own the following:

The Black Cauldron - just doesn't seem like a Disney film, and it is too dark for little ones to understand.

Saludos Amigos - moves to slow and just couldn't get interested in it.

I think I own all the rest of the Disney library either on DVD or VHS or both.

Just will not even watch anything that Disney releases direct to video. All of these sequels must not be good enough for them to put in theaters or they just have cut too many corners and the quality isn't there. Why waste the money on those films when there are so many other films out there to buy for my collection.

I was watching the special features on The Lion King the other day and they mentioned after The Lion King was released, people wanted a sequel. I think some of these sequels are made because people want sequels.

Why don't you just read the site reviews for both these films, they both explain what has been edited from the dvds.

But to summarise, Make Mine Music is missing an 8 minute segment called "the Martins and the Coys" or "A Rustic Ballad" which is about a feuding family, the DVD even announces that the film has been modified.

Melody time has been digitally altered to digitally remove Pecos Bill smoking and a few seconds which could not be digitally altered have been removed in their entirety.

Saludos amigos has had a few seconds cut and animation looped to cut Goofy smoking.

Well I'll just tell you the ones I do have:
Aladdin
Bambi
Brother Bear
The Lion King
Treasure Planet

I don't have the others since I'm waiting for a better release, I missed it before it went OOP or I don't have the money.

Well, my reasoning is that I'm *hoping* for better treatment on their discs. I'm only young, so I'll just keep waiting and waiting..even if that means waiting for 50 years. :p
