Well, he said that it's unlikely that you'll find one, which is increasingly true. Disney has stopped printing copies of Bambi with slip covers. That doesn't mean you still can't find them. It does mean that they are getting much harder to find by the second- and may be all sold out in some areas of the country. So no, he didn't lie... just go buy Bambi, either with a slip-cover or call Disney for one. :)

Most copies of Bambi that I've seen up here in Canada still have slipcovers.

*BIG SIGH.*

Alright, guys, I thought we had all established this by now. Disney has been issuing slipcovers for a long time now (began with Beauty and the Beast in 2002 and really started to become the norm with Sleeping Beauty in 2003, and MOST 2-disc sets since then have carried a slipcover on their initial pressings.) From observation by myself and several other longtime UD members, we have seen in the past that Disney's release pattern for movies with slipcovers is to print slipcovers FOR THE FIRST FEW RUNS OF THE DISC ONLY, and then the slipcover is quietly removed. This was something that really wasn't that much of an issue with Beauty and the Beast, but became increasingly more appearant with Sleeping Beauty, and then was obvious with Lion King and Finding Nemo as Disney rushed to keep up with the huge demand for those titles upon their releases. I remember quite clearly that in January 2004, I was at Target browsing for other DVDs and happened to see an entire shelf full of Finding Nemos, none of which had slipcovers, and then was when it really dawned on me what they were doing.

And it makes sense, too.

The slipcovers -- particurarly those that open up like a book and describe the features included on the discs -- are designed as a PROMOTIONAL TOOL to help Disney make that one last sales pitch to the customer who is on the fence about buying it. Funny thing is I remember typing out this exact same example once before, but it's still relivant, so:

Pretend that it is fall 2003 and The Lion King is new on DVD. Pretend you are an average Joe consumer who sees it in the store and remembers "Oh, this is a good movie, maybe I'll get it...but wait, I've already got it on VHS from 1995...do I really need to buy it again." Yousee the slipcover and open it, and see the colorful, inviting layout of the features included in the set and decide that, yes, you'd like to see these features and yes, you will buy it again.

Now pretend that it is May 2005 and it's your birthday, and you just got your first DVD player. Say you've been a longtime fan of The Lion King, and you go to the store looking for it. You find it, without a slipcover, but no matter. Disney doesn't need to sell you on buying it -- you looked for it specifically, you're already sold. The slipcover is designed as a last-minute chance for Disney to push someone on the product, providing them much more space in the book-opening than just the back of a case would, to promote the product with flashy images and a description of the features included. But in 2005, two years after The Lion King has made its DVD debut, is anyone who looks for it really going to need to be pushed on it? Doubtful, so why bother printing the slipcover anymore?

See the point here? The slipcover is NOT intended for collectors; it's nice for us, and it looks cool and is an extra source of protection for the keepcase underneath, but THEY ARE, AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN, DESIGNED AS TOOLS FOR DISNEY TO USE TO PROMOTE AND ADVERTISE. Disney is a cooperation -- it wants your MONEY. The slipcover is Disney's final oppertunity to clench the sale by reminding the hesitating consumer of everything the DVD includes. It is PROMOTION, and just as you wouldn't see a TV spot for a DVD that came out two years ago, you don't need a slipcover. The marketing campign for the older titles has ended and they are onto new titles to promote; thus, they are spending their money promoting that. We forget that the slipcovers = promotional items. PERIOD.

So, it is useless for Disney to produce them after the DVD is old.

They don't go around to stores and ask for the slipcover copies back, they just stop producing them. This means that, if you want a slipcover badly enough, you should make a point of buying the DVD as soon as you can after its release. Once the copies with slipcovers are gone, they're gone, period.

Why are there copies of Aladdin and/or The Incredibles and/or Bambi on store shelves with slipcovers still? Simple. Those particular copies have not been sold, for whatever reason. Or maybe they came from the last shipment Disney sent to the store with slipcovers before discontinuing production of the slipcover, or maybe some other reason. Why it's still there, and where it is, is a moot issue. If you find one with a slipcover, you find one, if you don't, you don't. And if you don't, CALL DISNEY AND ASK THEM FOR ONE -- THEY WILL USUALLY SEND IT TO YOU, as long as you're not asking them for a hundred of them or something.

As I said before, WHAT ARE YOU BUYING THE DVD FOR?

The way everyone continually whines about slipcovers on these boards, I'm beginning to wonder if everyone else here is buying the slipcover and getting a DVD movie as a bonus in the bundle.

I buy for the movie; the slipcover is a promotional tool, and a collector's luxury. But that's all it is, a luxury, a bonus. If you want the MOVIE, why on EARTH would you decline to buy it simply because of the lack of a slipcover?

Everyone -- with all due respect, you need to sort out your priorities here.

Oy vey.

yeah. A lot of people on these people on the forum (me included), will get the slipcover of the DVD if it was first released with it. On the Definitive Slipcovers thread, everybody was like talking about how they ordered the slipcovers from disney, and they think its "more important to the DVD"

I also think that, and it protects the DVD case too. It just makes me feel bad if the DVD was originally released with a slipcase and mine doesn't have it.

If we really need to discuss slipcovers further, then Jake's Definitive Slipcover thread is the place to do it. I would think we've exhausted all possible conversations on the topic by now, but clearly not. Still, I've had to lock a number of threads in the past week asking "Does _____ come with a slipcover?" (which can be answered in the # of seconds it takes to load Jake's first post) and if this thread just continues to be about that, then it can go in the slipcover thread too.

Sometimes, I too wonder if people even watch DVDs or just admire their packaging on the shelf.

That reminded me of the BAMBI slipcover: velcro or goo? Which had these faces:  :x

To think that was only 2 months ago, and I have this face when the talk of slipcover arises:

I used to want all the slipcovers of Disney, but now...not anymore. As long as I have the DVD. *shrugs* Plus, I don't want to call DCS and annoy them again. ;)

Though slipcovers do add "beauty" to the DVD as a whole, the main reason to buy a DVD should be for the movie itself and the bonus features! Woo-HOo! (wait, where's my emoticon for that...) Image

Oh, I know Dave might have something to say about my post and slipcovers! Therefore, I'll just clear it up: yes Dave, people should stop asking for slipcovers and move on to talk about the DVD itself...like me! <3

At least she get a side use to the slipcovers

And hey, after all, what matters is to have the very movie, wih or without the slipcover.

Or di you watched your first time this movie and they give you a slipcover?

Just the Personal opinion of one guy who only have had one slipcove on his entire life

If you can't find the DVD with the slipcover, buy it anyway and then call 1-800-723-4763 and they'll send you one if they still have them. (They should. I only recently got my Sleeping Beauty slipcover, and it's been out of print for ages.)

Did you read the coupon where it says "Good in U.S.A. and its territories..."

basically, if you walk into Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, the Mall, or anywhere that sells New&Sealed DVDs and has a cash register, you can use the coupon there...

Do they still sell Bambi for 22.99 at stores , which is the online price. But the online price may be different than the store price. So how much do they charge for bambi at best buy stores?

I bought my Bambi right away so it has the slipcover, but in general I don't care much for Disney cover artwork (although I must admit it's much better than some of the old VHS's). If I really liked the artwork, then yes, I'd be enthralled by the slipcover, but to me having one is kinda annoying cuz it only gets in my way when I'm trying to get it open.

But that's just me..
