As much as I wanted to defy the current voting results and pick my lovely Poca, I figured I'd pick who I thought had the largest fanbases...
Belle - quite simply, because she's the hottest of them all. And probably the most intelligent too.
Cinderella - she's been around for 57 years and counting, and her movie has the benefit of either having rabid fanatics or casual viewers, but not that many disturbingly hateful anti-fans. Plus, there's a more "universal" appeal, I think, for the Cinderella character than there is for some of the other princesses. I mean, she's so perfect it's sickening, but a lot of people will still like her and identify with her plight (to a certain extent, unless there really are people stuck doing slave labor in their own house and having to talk to mice in your spare time...)
Aurora - I love Aurora, I do, but I simply voted for her just because I didn't want to vote for the Tiny Fishgirl or The Shrill.

I totally disagree with you. That is exactly what would happen. A whole new generation of fans would discover her, as they have with Cinderella and Ariel over the last couple of years. It's no surprise that the largest number of votes have been cast for the two girls who've had DVD's out in the last year. What is nice is that Belle does seem to have an enduring popularity which is reflected in the votes. If Beauty and the Beast had been released in the last month, there would be no competition.Disney Duster wrote:If Beauty and the Beast comes to DVD, Belle doesn't suddenly get more fans, people are just into her more, and the girls who are already fans of her suddenly rush out to get more Belle. But that doesn't mean she gets more fans.

I think the "new generation" you're referring to would be around the ages of 10 or below. Most people on these boards have a history with Disney and wouldn't just vote for a character based on when their latest merchandise was released.

I think searching on the internet says it all. There are a HUGE ammount of sites dedicated to Ariel. I agree with Disney Duster in the sense that people who are Ariel fans are ususallly "I LOVE Ariel" and are extremely dedicated to her.
A prime example of this would be Little Ariel.com, an amazing Ariel fansite. The dedication of the fans over there are amazing. Ariel seems to inspire this in her fans.
Therefore, I voted for Ariel. (My personal favourite anyway)

But as an Ariel fan, have you ever looked to see how many Beauty and the Beast fan sites there are?
I still stand by the view that the popularity of the Princesses will always be dictated by how recently they've seen a DVD release.
Another thing is, when you go to Disneyland, how many little girls do you see dressed as Ariel, but you see plenty dressed as Belle, Cinders, Aurora and Snow White.
I really don't think there is that big a difference between any of them in terms of popularity, and there will always be one or two drifting in or out of popularity.

B. Oh boy, here we go again.
*Plus, I don't know how many parents would love the idea of their children walking around in sea-shell swimsuits.

You know, sorry about that last post - it was a bit blunt.
Put it down to suffering from cold for the last 2 weeks, and still not feeling particularly better. Had a major headache for the best part of a week which I don't seem able to shift.
But....
I really am beginning to question my place on this forum. I've had a couple of issues with 2 other forum members recently, which were very unpleasant. Both times I was going to leave the forum, first time I announced it - second time I just left for 2 weeks.
I really don't know whether I've got anything more to say on here. I find these poll threads, and the bragging threads about how certain people have got more DVD's than others, and certainly some of the stuff in off topic, where I rarely post to be really tiresome. Does it really matter to read another thread on subtitles, do I really care what food you last ate, or that Roy Disney was getting divorced. And I find a discussion about which Princess has the most fans to be a bit bizarre, and I'm kind of concerned that I've got dragged into the debate, because really, this isn't the most productive use of anyone's time.
I'm not having a pop at anyone in particular. I suspect I'm probably a lot older than the average age range of people on this site.
I've started threads before, which I thought might get some genuine debate or discussion going about things, and they get virtually no responses. Yet some of the most inane topics seem to run and run and run.
I know this isn't really the best place to post this, and I'm not gonna announce I'm leaving, because I might stick around. I apologise for hijacking the thread. This might just be me at a low point of being ill, but I'm really not sure if there's a place for me on this board anymore. I almost abandoned it 2 weeks ago, and came back, but I've been feeling like a bit of a relic over the last week or so since I've been posting again. And if I'm getting wound up by other people's posts, and causing controversy with my replies - maybe I shouldn't be here.
Just being a bit grumpy I guess.

I think Ariel might sell the most merchandise (like shirts, and stuffed toys and the like) then the other princesses because people love Ariel, probably because she's so easy to relate to. However, when you go to DL or wherever, no one is dressed like her because A) it'd be kinda hard and B) the other princesses are more BEAUTIFUL, which is why they sell more dolls and costumes and that kind of thing. so..it depends which merchandise you're talking about. and i think the other princesses sell more books, and that sort of thing.

Ariel is the Disney Princess that has more albums and songs out.
Songs from the movies, from the TV series, and from different CDs like: Songs from the Sea, Splash Hits, Sebastian: Party Gras!...
Have a look at all the albums released for The Little Mermaid:

Which Disney Princess has a Larger Fanbase
Darth_deeto, I can't believe you don't like this topic, when you like the princesses so much! There's obviously some princesses that are more popular than others! I mean, look at the main six, more popular than Kida, Pocahontas, or Mulan! And then look at how Jasmine, Snow White, and Aurora aren't on as much merchandise as Ariel, Cinderella, or Belle. Doesn't that interest you?
I hope people don't bug you, because you have a strong will and strong opinions, the most fun to debate with. Oh, and I hope you are feeling better and get unsick.
And I will say, maybe there is more of a connection to DVDs and princess fandom than I thought. Because Aladdin was released with the lowest sales of all the Platinums, and Jasmine is that movie's princess, and you don't see Jasmine as much as the other princesses.
And you said in the UK they are selling more Aurora? Well her Platinum DVD is scheduled for this Fall! So it's like Disney controls the fandom! Isn't that gross? It's like they control what's popular! They control our minds!
Jasmine1022, okay, woah, so many people, especially guys, think Ariel is the hottest Disney princess. The only way I can say you'd think the other princesses are more beautiful is because they have a big beautiful dress or a crown, ribbon, or jeweled band in their hair, and Ariel just has a tail. But really, each girl thinks of the princesses in beauty differently, and probably think the princess that's most beautiful is the one that looks more like them. Though I once read a little girl wanted to have black hair and white skin like Snow White...how sad.
In any case, I heard one high school girl say they didn't know why there wasn't more Jasmine around, because she thought Jasmine was the prettiest.
There is even a thread about the lack of Jasmine merchandise: Where's Princess Jasmine?

Believe me, she does! Her kingdom does, at the very least. There's a forum that I casually visit where BatB fanatics are always going at it. The "Pyros" fight against the "Cogs." Gaston has his real-life fangirls. People write lengthy debates about Belle and the Beast's relationship.PeterPanfan wrote:I don't really think Belle has much fanbase...
I just think Babbette is pretty cute, and I've played her in a local performance before.

That's hot.

Re: Which Disney Princess has a Larger Fanbase
Basically, yeah. Ariel is beautiful, I know. She has a beautiful face, and hair, etc. But, when it comes to little girls and halloween, they are going to remember Cinderella and how over-the-top beautiful she was in her gown, and want to be her. Some (the independant ones) may want to be Ariel, but I think little girls like over-the-top more. Ask a little girl who's more beautiful--Barbie with a sparkly, amazing, big dress and tiara, or Barbie in her sunday best. they'd pick the froofy dress in a heartbeat, believe me.Disney Duster wrote: Jasmine1022, okay, woah, so many people, especially guys, think Ariel is the hottest Disney princess. Nope. You're about the same age as me, and, even though you're a boy, you might remember the American Girl dolls. They had the standards (which were all pretty) and then they had dolls that the girls could kind of personally design to look like them, and those never caught on. I mean...When I was a little girl, I wanted to play with really beautiful dolls and make fairy tales with them. The only time I ever wanted a doll in jeans or something was before I made her beautiful, and I never wanted her to be in those clothes for long because the fun of it was playing with the dolls that were so gorgeous it almost made your eyes bleed.Disney Duster wrote:But really, each girl thinks of the princesses in beauty differently, and probably think the princess that's most beautiful is the one that looks more like them.
Jasmine is perfect. She's right in the middle. She isn't 'rags to riches'. Her outfit is really pretty, and yet the girls feel like they can relate to how she looks because she doesn't have a fin, like Ariel. And if you are thinking about saying "How about Human Ariel?", there are practically no human Ariel dolls, because everyone loves the mermaid version. But, either way, she's right. I think Jasmine's the bestDisney Duster wrote:In any case, I heard one high school girl say they didn't know why there wasn't more Jasmine around, because she thought Jasmine was the prettiest.

I know your little snap wasn't directed towards me specifically but I wanted to apologise anyway. I was just trying to lighten the mood, especially since I find it a bit silly that we simple fans are actually trying to decide which princess has the largest fanbase. Only the Disney big-shots can really know that based on facts (supply and demand, dollars made etc).darth_deetoo wrote:Plenty of Ariel dresses on sale last time I looked, so there's no point in trying to make a fool out of me with your sarcasm.

I don't think dressing up in pretty outfits is the same thing as relating to a character. Her outfit is really pretty, and yet the girls feel like they can relate to how she looks because she doesn't have a fin, like Ariel.
