Cancelled TV Shows - which one made you the saddest?

"Arrested Development" was easily the cleverest, funniest, and most inventive show I've seen in a long time. Nothing frustrated me more than that show not catching on.

Although I'm not one to comment on a lot of the American cancelations, here's a couple that spring to mind:

Joan of Arcadia: What's wrong with you people? Quality, thought provoking TV like this get's axed? Shame on each and every one of you in your nation. (That said, had it gone down the anti-Joan path it began to explore at the end of the second season, it's probably just as well)

Tremors: The Series: I only caught a couple of these, but they appeared to be fun. Why isn't this out on DVD? Why?

The ABC sitcom It's All Relative was really good but it was cancelled after only 22 episodes and with the last 2 unaired.

The CBS drama series The Guardian was pretty good too and did not deserve cancellation

Battlestar Galactica 1978-1979 To bad it didn't run longer I still have colonial viper and cylon raider shooting toys.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century Too much on set fighting ruined it.

Supertrain 1979 If only NBC had taken there time and got right it would have lasted longer.

I was mad when they cancelled Family Guy and Futurama. I was also mad that they cancelled The Critic, which was a unique show. I guess they cancelled it before it got stale.

I have a couple:

Dead Like Me: I thought this show was brilliant - so funny and touching, and just different, and I"m gad that it got two seasons but I wanted a bunch more.

Carnivale: I know a lot of people hated this show, because it was slow and weird, but I thiought it was so good - and I hate hate hate that they ended it on a cliffhanger.

Arrested Development: I think this is seriously the funnest show that's ever been and I know they could have done more with it.

Family Guy, Firefly, and Boston Public. I thought all 3 were really good shows!

I'm sure when I was little I was also really upset when they cancelled Thundercats.

Alias (If only they had stuck with Rambaldi the entire time, gosh darnit!)
Angel (I was the most sad/mad at this one)
Birds of Prey (I loved this show when it was on)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I know it had seven seasons, but more could have been done)
Everwood (so good, all the time, I still miss it)
Justice League (the original, not the lame Unlimited version)
The O.C. (only because the last season was so good, Taylor rox!)
Reba (I think I'll miss Reba's accent most of all)
Teen Titans (good show, had great visual style)

I'm sure that once Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Supernatural, The Class, and What About Brian get cancelled I'll be updating my post.

Oh my gosh!! How could I forget about Titans!! Yet another show that NBC cancelled. It was really cheesy but so much fun to watch. A true guilty pleasure. And wasn't the last episode a real cliffhanger? and we never got to see how it was resolved. CURSE NBC!!

Anyway, for me... I've never been sad to see any show get canceled. Yep, not even Daria or So NoTorious. However, I wish Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers or MTV's The Real World had been canceled before now... they just won't stop, will they? The Real World has only produced one decent season since 2000's New Orleans- Philadelphia, and that was only half as good as the weakest season from '92 to 2000 (probably 99's Hawaii).

I am sorry however that they never made more episodes for Fawlty Towers or So NoTorious - I am addicted to re and re-watching those episodes constantly. It is a very sorry end for NoTorious especially, since the last episode "Canadian" was by far the best.


But I tell you a show I am going to be EXTREMELY sorry if there isn't a third season to this year - Masters of Horror. It will probably die after that 2nd season, since it received pitiful at best reactions from critics and fans. But it seriously deserves another shot. Just... one... more season. The number of it's highs ("The Screwfly Solution" and "Family") have nearly matched the highs of the first season, while the lows of the second season ("The Damned Thing," "Dream Cruise," "Valerie on the Stairs") were improvements on the lows ("Dance of the Dead," "Haekel's Tale") of the first season. Even the show's mainstream audience (which might be what keeps it going) would agree. It's just such a pity to see directors like Landis, Garris, and Dante improving their formulas in the 2nd season only to see the show canceled for poor ratings. Besides, there are so many directors that deserve a chance to direct for the 3rd season. I can't believe Hardware's Richard Stanley hasn't been brought to the table yet. Or Basket Case / Brain Damage's Frank Henenlotter. Or Jeff Lieberman (Blue Sunshine, Just Before Dawn, Squirm). Also, John McNaughton and Tom Holland deserve second chances to beat the bad receptions their episodes got. And- more Lucky McKee, please! And Larry Cohen needs to come back. Then, Roger Corman was going to direct an episode for the 1st season and didn't, it'd be nice to see him do one for this season. Then, just think of the press that would come from having hot-shots like Eli Roth or Rob Zombie directing for the show. They could try at least.

I'm 100% possitive that they're referring to the original cancellation of Family Guy back in 2001. At least the new episode of Family Guy will air tomarrow, so is American Dad.

I'm dating myself here, but I was upset when The Wonderful World of Disney ended in 1983. It was always a Sunday night tradition in our family. Luckily, we got The Disney Channel a few years later and were able to watch reruns every night.

Oh so many-
Joan of Arcadia- wonderful show.
Wondefalls- was promising.
Popular- so pissed with that horrible ending.
Out Of Practice- should've given it one more season.
Huff-so much quality there it got Emmys, should've given it more
Joey- not so much sad about the show itself but the end of an era, and how badly it was treated.
8 Simple Rules- was a good show, sucks that the show died whn John Ritter did.
Brandy and Mr. Whiskers- it was good, should've given it AT LEAST up til the 42 episodes that they had planned, but Disney stupidly just cut it right on 39 episodes because of the truly disastrous ratings. They didn't even get a chance to go home. If they'd have given it the extra 3 eps then they would've gone home. Sucks completely.
Dave the Barbarian- Shoudl've given it a least another season. Can understand it's non-appeal though.
The Buzz on Maggie- The only thing worse than a two-season cancellation is a one season one. At least it ended nicely.
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch- Even though it went for 7 seasons, it was still sad to see it cancelled. They should've put Harvey in the last season more, and ended better, with more from Salem, the aunts, the mum, and Amanda. Fun though.
Dead Like Me- I haven't seen this, but have heard it's been compared to Six Feet Under. If its that good, then it deserves to have more than just two seasons.
Six Feet Under- I know it wasn't cancelled, but sad to end anyway. If you see one season finale ever, make it the Six Feet Under one. I wanted to cry after seeing the finale, and I never cry to TV. Please, do yourself a favour and watch it. The music is like the most beautiful thing I've ever heard, and it's haunting, the final moments. Stunning in every sense.
American Dragon-Jake Long- Heard it's cancelled, but still not sure. I liked it, but only for the first season. Once the animation changed, the show died. But still disappointing.
Phil of the Future- Ah, the pain of this cancellation. Liked the show, and was sad to see that it was getting cancelled after two seasons. I was shocked to hear it, but I though it was doing phenomenonally well. i thought that people loved it, but I guess I was wrong.
Lizzie McGuire- ad to see it go, but even sadder to see that Miranda wasn't in the final eps and the movie. That totally sucked.
Grosse Pointe- I loved this show for its brief run. I was really good. Should've had one more season
Reba- glad that Kyra came back though. It was one of the few good sitcoms on nowadays.

OMG, somebody besides me actually remembers Titans!!!

IIRC, the cliffhanger was for the episode before the last one that aired, where Jenny slipped, knocked herself unconscious, and fell into a pool unnoticed by anyone. I remember reading that the last episode scheduled to air was either pre-empted or moved to yet another timeslot, and the last two episodes produced were never aired here. Dammit.

Now that's reminded me of a few more primetime shows I was pissed when they got canceled:

Cancellations disappoint more often than not, though they're often expected. Without a doubt the saddest for me personally was "Everwood", one of television's greatest series that was still as good as ever in its fourth season and ended all too soon.

The least sad cancellation has to be "The O.C." Never have I been less apathetic about a show that I actually still made time to watch by the time it ended.

Life as we know it- it aired on ABC for only 10 episodes, I think. I really enjoyed it. Kelly Osbournes acting even improved throughout those 10 episodes.

The Comeback- Was on HBO. I LOOOOOOOVED Lisa Kudrow in this, it was just uber funny.

Carnivale- WTF?! Another great show that HBO cancelled... morons.

I think all of my shows have been listed already, but I thought I would add my sentiment to their demise.

"Ed" - I absolutely LOOoooooved this show. This was my first appointment television show. Seriously. It lasted four fantastic seasons, and not 1 of which is out on DVD. Why?.........WHY!? Great, GREAT show.




"Phil of the Future" - This was one of the first shows that I regularly watched out of the 'newer' Disney Channel TV shows (I watched So Weird and Even Stevens, but this was my favorite....even though it came a bit later). Also a show that is NOT out on DVD. They have a simple compilation disc (which by the way has a "vol. 1" on the spine which would falsely lead people to believe that they would release more), but this show truly deserves season sets.......I would settle for episode podcast downloads; just so I could see the entire series again. (QUESTION: Did Phil ever actually go back to the future?)




"Carnivale" - This was another great show with such memorable characters and seriously complex storylines. It also doesn't help that it had a cliffhanger ending. The whole series is on DVD, and I heard that HBO might restart the series, or make a miniseries followup or even a movie in theatres. I would prefer to restart the series (but I'll bet that is wishful thinking), so I think we might actually get a miniseries finale thingy. Here's hopin'




Here are some shows that I think were cancelled before their prime, but I wasn't devastated when I found out they were cancelled.

"Commander in Chief" - This was just beginning to find itself, and could've been serious dramatic television (the kind which we seem to be lacking in this past year). The entire series is on DVD, but only a handful of episodes are intensely rewatchable. Oh, what could've been.

"Nowhere Man" - While the storyline of season one was mostly self contained, the character of Tom Veil (aka "The Gemini Man") had so much left in his journey of self discovery in finding out who he was. The complete series is on DVD and the creators briefly mention where the show might have gone in the future had UPN not cancelled it.

"Wonderfalls" - Hourlong comedy shows never have really taken off with the ratings, but Wonderfalls could've been the miracle everyone was hoping for. This show was so endearing and the quirky humor was so much fun to watch. This complete series is on DVD with some really cool bonuses, but fortunately the series could be considered self-contained.
