I'm really annoyed that 101D gets delayed yet again, but to be fair to Disney it makes all the sense in the world.
Us DVD collectors are a fraction of the DVD buyers and 2007 is already going to be the first year in years without a dvd release that would support the Princess franchise.
And the DVD releases, especially Aladdin, Cindy and TLM were really crucial to the licensing business. All Princess promotional events recently were tied in to the DVDs. Disney Consumer Products just cannot afford to go for 2 years without a Princess.

I think there are ways to go around that. They can do a princess promotion without a prinncess movie.Jakijajah wrote:I'm really annoyed that 101D gets delayed yet again, but to be fair to Disney it makes all the sense in the world.

Someone said earlier something about releasing 3 a year because there wouldn't be that much to do with a film like Snow White. I agree. I feel like they could release Snow White in the same year as Pinocchio and lets say 101 Dalmatians. Lets all face it, its going to have a lot of the same features ported over and some newer games, there's not going to be a whole lot of difference. Not saying that's a bad thing though. I just think that if disney REALLY wants to do this all for sales, they would follow that plan. I know i would buy into it all, lol.

well, they do have a princess movie coming out next year, it's called "Enchanted" and then 2 years after that comes Rapunzel.Jakijajah wrote:I'm really annoyed that 101D gets delayed yet again, but to be fair to Disney it makes all the sense in the world.

I feel really sad about not having Dalmatians sooner, I really only want to collect the original 10 platinums and Pinnochio, now I'm gonna have to settle with PE of Peter Pan and maybe just upgrade my Snow White.

Oh I thought you guys knew.PatrickvD wrote:oh for crap's sake, how many times will they keep changing!?!? they better release dalmatians first, I don't have it yet.
yes I'm pissed
101 Dalmations is just going to get a 2 Disc "Masterpiece" re-working
along the same lines as Alice In Wonderland.
Partly because of the Live Action Remakes.
Apparently people saw them at the movies and said
"well I don't need to watch the animated version again"
As this year was its 45th Anniversary, I bought a Cruella Big Fig Sculpture from Disneyland to celebrate that fact. Other fans were there that day, and we chatted about how disappointingly unknown the animated version of 101 Dalmations had become nowdays, as kids now just assume we're talking about Glen Close.
Yes, 101 Dalmations USED TO BE part of that Disney Treasure Collection back in 1999. And that they have discontinued the Live Action DVDs in the States. They're still available in Australia though.
But thats not just coincidence.
They are doing something with Dalmations.
It's just not Platinum Something though.
Since more flashier & profitable titles were added
aka: Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia & Peter Pan
the less profitable titles were shooshed away to a corner.
Kids line up for hours to get a photo with Sleeping Beauty, even if they haven't seen the film in their lifetimes, just cos their mothers tell them she's trendy.
Families line up for hours ( 3 hours in Tokyo Disneyland ) to go on
Peter Pans flight. And girls like Tinkerbell.
And Fantasia just keeps getting re-released cos they know that the Home Video market is the place where it will make its money lost from its opening half a century earlier.
Jungle Book is only still left on as a Platinum Title because it was
Walts last film to work on, so they can add a bonus feature about that on the DVD.
You'll see 101 Dalmations at Christmas next year as a "Spotty Dog" Edition or something equally silly. Still as good as a Platinum Release, just without the nice gold banner.
Apologies for being negative.
It is still coming out.
It won't be on BluRay & it won't be Platinum.
Even expect an unnecessary Triple Pack Bundle with the
Live Action & Animated Movies.
Christmas 2007.

Where did you get all this information HappyPug? I don't mean to be pesimistic, but i've never heard of this. Also, I don't really understand what you mean by kids not remembering the animated 101D, and how it wouldn't be marketable. There are 99 puppies in the movie for god's sake! Also 101D is one of the top 10 disney animated films of all time, that's why it was in the original 10 PEs. I guess I just can't see them downgrading a movie from the PE line, especially one that i believe is as loved as this one, but this repeated postponedment does make this situation look fishy...
Wow, 101 Dalmations bumped off the Platinum line completely?? If that is true, that sucks. I've been looking forward to the PE release of 101 D's. But, I guess as long as it gets new treatment and most importantly 2 disc, I guess it really doesn't matter what they call it. BUT, I really hope they DO keep it as a Platinum, it's such a great film.

Signature courtesy of blackcauldron85!!
Since we know for a fact that 101D isn't going to be part of the Platinum Edition line next year, I could care less if it gets dropped from the line completely (as long as it's released next year in a definitive 2-Disc Platinum-esque treatment). I've been looking forward to owning this title on DVD for a long time now. The sooner it's sitting on my Disney DVD shelf, the better!

"Hey mum where's 101 Dalmations on DVD? "
It's all "Oooh look its Woody. Where's Buzz? I love Nemo! I want Cake!"
If my kids are any indication, they have no interest in the classic films until we tell them to appreciate them.
Which is fine. I'm sure I was like that when I was little.
I have the Limited Issue 101 Dalmations on DVD. I have every animated classic. I've not sat my kids down to watch 101 Dalmations since they don't seem interested. They only watched The Little Mermaid cos I forced them to.
Disney know this.
It's all Woody this & Nemo that right now.
Sure, 101 Dalmations was all the rage back in 1991 after cinemas showed all the old classics on the big screen again in 88 - 91.
But since nothing like that has happened in the past 16 years, kids nowadays don't know what they are.
Hence my examples of "profitable titles" like Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan and to a very lesser extent Fantasia.
I love Fantasia. My kids hate it.
They only like Bratz, pointless Universal Computer Animated Tripe and
their Xbox.
It's not like it used to be people.
The times they are becoming quite different, as it were.
101 Dalmations is still coming out.
Lets just be glad about that.

I personally feel that "101 Dalmatians" is one of the easier to market of the classics. Sure it doesn't have a princess that girls have waited in line to meet in the parks, but kids love dogs. I remember going through a mild obsession with this movie as a kid when it was released in 91. Not because it was released to theaters or I was forced to watch it, but becasuse I found the fact that a cartoon full of funny dalmatian puppies trying to find their way home to be hugely entertaining. I remember being bribed with getting a trip to Toy's R Us as a reward for good behavior in the hospital when my grandma had a surgery and I sure was good so that I could get another one of the Dalmatian toys. In the end, I had all of them. This is a film that kids would love if they were exposed to it. It doesn't need to be by force. It would just require a good add campaign with commercials on movies and shows kids watch and toys available for kids to buy. If a kid buys the cute Dalmatian stuffed animal at Wal Mart and finds out it is from a movie, they are bound to show interest. I find that "101 Dalmatians" holds much more interest for kids than "Lady and the Tramp" or "The Jungle Book," two Platinums that have seen/will see the light of day before Dalmatians gets it's chance to prove it's worth.

Wow I didn't expect my news to make the front page!
I think what HappyPug meant is that Disney will surely release it at some point in a non-Platinum edition. It doesn't seem very likely they would seriously wait until 2009 to release it! Although you never know I guess...singerguy04 wrote:Where did you get all this information HappyPug?

I beg to differ. "101 Dalmatians" has always been the most profitable film of the 4 films you mentioned. SB, PP and "Fantasia" may boast better animation but nonetheless, "101 Dalmatians" has proven the definite winner between all those as far as box-office and video sales concern.HappyPug wrote:Since more flashier & profitable titles were added

Sleeping Beauty sold a modest 1 million videos when first released on VHS. Dalmatians sold more than 10 million (and more than 5 million second time 'round). SB's dvd release in 2003 sold thinly, only 2.3 million.
The main reason SB got in the list is probably because of its artistic and musical achievements which are incredible indeed.
Fantasia and PP also cannot beat Dalmatians' popularity but they have their reasons at Disney's. Declaring that this line is based on video sales though is utter crap.
P.S. of-course little girls would prefer buying/dressing like Aurora and not like a dog. Heck, even I would. Sorry, Patch.

When was the last time that Disney publisized and heavily marketed 101D? Of course kids are going to be partial to films from their era, that's a given. I believe it's true that we have to introduce these films to the children of today, but i think Cinderella, Snow White, Lady and the Tramp, Bambi, and all the other PE classics that have been released are proof that it's possible. We were all like that when we were little, if my mom hadn't told me "watch this, you'll love it" then i wouldn't have discovered any of the films from walts era. And if it's not you that'll introduce them to it, more than likely someone else will at some point in time, and the fact that this film has appealed to sooooo many people over the years i'd be willing to bet they'd enjoy it at least a little bit. for example, what happened after your children watched the little mermaid? I think disney has a plan other than, "Hey Pixar's all that matters, lets make everyone like this and forget completely about how important these other classics were that allowed this company to stay alive and let Pixar be what it is today in the first place!". I mean, if anyone else has noticed a Disney Dog's line is opening. And on every single advertisement i've seen that suggests such a line, Pongo's been there. "Sure, 101 Dalmations was all the rage back in 1991 after cinemas showed all the old classics on the big screen again in 88 - 91." you just said what i've been trying to say, it's possible! Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia aren't that profitable. Aurora is, but Sleeping Beauty isn't. Kids just don't really get Sleeping Beauty, the film always put me to sleep when i was youger, but as i grew up i began to appriciate what it was and now it's my favorite. Fantasia's almost the same way. The older crowd is what'll buy this, and 101D appeals to both older and newer, so i really don't understand your argument that 101D isn't as profitable as these two titles. I agree that times have changes and all that, that's why dinsey goes for how "fun" these movies are when they advertise them, but 101D is just as fun as any of them. I'll be happy as long as the film gets the treatment it deserves, but i'll be heavily dissapointed in disney if it's not called a platinum.HappyPug wrote:

the disney movies in my era were Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King etc. But my all time favourite is Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland. I could watch them for HOURS. (Well, Beauty is my favourite too hehe).
I don't remember really enjoying it much; 101D, I remember thinking how can 1 dog have 101 puppies at one time. LOL vey logical thinker I was hehe.
Kids now adays are weird. Its all about videogames, and stuff, when I was growing up (listen to me all sage at 23), it was books, and what not. I was content with the 'boring disney" or disney that didn't have that much animation (like Bedknobs and Broomsticks/Mary Poppins). I'm buying most of the disney movies so my kids if i ever have them can enjoy the true classics. There is nothing wrong with Nemo or Woody/Buzz, but they aren't....it isn't...like the others.

Listen HappyPug,
You can't just come on here and declare 101 Dalmatians has been taken from the Platinum line without a shread of evidence. It is fine to make a hypothesis but you need to be clear that you are merely guessing. There are people who asked you where you got your information and you failed to answer their question. Look at all the people who were easily convinced you were right because you made it sound as though you came across some concrete evidence 101 Dalmatians has been wiped from the Platinum line.
The film was made part of the Platinum line a long time ago and there is no reason to believe it has been removed until Disney says so, regardless of what you happen to think is marketable. Please don't come on here and make such outlandish statements without clear qualification. If you do indeed discover some news, you must give your source.
