Grease: Rockin' Rydell Edition September 19
Wow, that's a pretty solid line-up right there. At 72 minutes, that's too much to cram onto the same disc as the movie without causing compression artifacts, so I think the blips about the R1 DVD being single disc are probably false, especially with R2 being two discs. Thanks for posting, Netty! I'll update the first post of this thread with the updated specs.
Ok, good news and bad news. First the bad just to get it out of the way: The disc has been post poned to the 19th (no biggie), but the really bad news is that the commentary supposedly has been dropped. I have no idea why this is because the commentary is already recorded and has been for the past four years. I'm hoping this is just misinformation from DavisDVD and that the commentary will show up, afterall.
Now, the goodnews is that artwork for both the front and back have been released:

I'm willing to bet a lot of people here won't like the patchwork style of the cover, but I personally love it. It's very bright and colorful, and I'm just glad to see that the same publicity image of Danny and Sandy that's been on every cover and poster hasn't been used here.

Have you seen the jacket slipcover? It is so great! Come on, Escapay! Even you have to admit that this is more than a DVD's condom.

Has anyone noticed that the movie is in WIDESCREEN? I'm happy! Hopefully it's REMASTERED!
Added: That slipcover is amazing!!!!! For a second there, I thought that someone actually put a jacket on the dvd, and then I realized that it was the slipcover!

Okay, that slipcover? Is freaking awesome, and I'm not even a fan of slipcovers in general! Way to go on the effort, Paramount! Supposedly there's also going to be one with a Pink Ladies jacket slipcover, as well.
Also, something very interesting was brought up in the comments section of DVDActive. Apparently the R4 edition will include these specs not mentioned yet for R1:
*Soda Jerk Specialties: A 'how-to' featurette about those soda fountain treats of a bygone era. We'll have a soda jerk demonstrate how to make those old fashioned soda shop favourites like ice cream sodas, egg creams, malts and banana splits
* Lets Go To The Hop: A re-creation of a 1950s sock hop, with a choreographer showing 6-10 couples how to do dances like the Stroll, the Hand Jive and the Lindy Hop
* Cool Cars: A featurette about fans of 1950s car culture. We'll follow a car aficionado as he restores a classic and takes it to a local diner's 'carhop' night to show it off
And now the biggie...
* Commentary with director Randal Kleiser and choreographer Patricia Birch
So either R4 is getting the commentary track and these featurettes and we're not, or Paramount just hasn't revealed everything to us R1ers, yet. I'm going to be optimistic and say the latter, and I'm editing the first post of this thread (again) with the new specs.

Hooray! I have kind of a fascination with '50s soda fountains so this is really exciting. I really hope it shows up (along with the commentary, of course).Disneykid wrote:*Soda Jerk Specialties: A 'how-to' featurette about those soda fountain treats of a bygone era. Yes, I've seen the picture. And while it's definitely more than a DVD condom, it's still...a DVD condom. Only fancier. With a zipper. And what I'm assuming is a realistic leather surface. Still, a slipcover like that will make the movie only take up more room on the shelf and pretty darn hard to keep in good condition. Leather damages easily, doesn't it? You know what's gonna happen? People will line it up on the shelf with all their other amarays, and just think to themselves, "Man...it looks so weird sticking out like that!" Then you know what they'll do? They'll take the jacket off and put it somewhere else, then stick the film back in its place and heave a sigh of relief that the amarays all line up again.
Still, it's so nice and shiny...and I know there will be people who'll accomodate their DVD collection to showcase this leather jacket.
Great, now I'm getting visions of Alan and his pedestal with the vacuum-sealed display case of that Ben-Hur: Four-Disc Collector's Edition...only this time it's gonna be Disneykid with Grease: Rockin' Rydell Edition.
I think I've found my greatest argument for why slipcovers are SUCH A WASTE. Sure, aesthetically this one beats the cardboard clone, but at the same time, it's just as useless. Still, I won't deprive anyone of their slipcover joy, so cheer away.
Now, if they REALLY wanted a slipcover to tie in to the movie and they had the balls to do it, Paramount would've designed the slipcover to be a 25 cent insurance policy that Kenickie bought in the seventh grade. That would really make "DVD condom" ring true...

I know DisneyKid posted this already, but I found this:
Limited Edition T-bird Leather Jacket Bonus Packaging
Rydell High Sing-Along: Choose from all the major songs of the film. A graphic of the song's lyrics keys over the top of the film with text that highlights with the music. Pick individual songs from the menu or watch the entire move in "sing-along" mode
The Making of Grease
Deleted / Extended Scenes
DVD Launch Party: A collection of memorable moments from the DVD launch party, including footage of the film's stars, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
Beauty School: A 'how to' piece about those fabylous 50's hairstyles featured in the film. A split screen will show the finished hairstyle on one side, and a hairstylist re-creating it in a 'how-to' format on the other side
Soda Jerk Specialties: A 'how-to' featurette about those soda fountain treats of a bygone era. We'll have a soda jerk demonstrate how to make those old fashioned soda shop favourites like ice cream sodas, egg creams, malts and banana splits

Don't be ridiculous; that spot is reserved for Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland: Unbirthday Edition when it hits Blu-Ray.Escapay wrote:Great, now I'm getting visions of Alan and his pedestal with the vacuum-sealed display case of that Ben-Hur: Four-Disc Collector's Edition...only this time it's gonna be Disneykid with Grease: Rockin' Rydell Edition.
In all seriousness, though, I actually still am anti-slipcover despite the fact that I really really like that jacket one. Like you said, it's going to be very awkward on the shelf, and as neat as the jacket is, I don't need it cluttering up space somewhere else if I remove it from the dvd case itself. Supposedly consumers will have the choice to buy the disc with or without the jacket slipcover. If that's the case (no pun intended), I'll be picking up the regular Amaray.
It's supposedly 1 disc in the US and 2 discs in the UK (and probably elsewhere). But don't let that excite you too much.Lazario wrote:I haven't heard whether this will be 2-disc yet or not. If it's not 2-disc - why the hell even bother?
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was 2 discs in the UK, but had the same content as the US single disc. Other Paramount releases have done this too (but I can't think of any off hand). It allows the 2 disc sets to be sold at a premium, while still offering a cheaper, single disc "regular" edition.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Lazario
I never doubted for a second that this movie's cast were some incredibly busy people. Especially Olivia (Satan really doesn't like this woman,
). But darn it, this movie and it's fans deserve a 2-disc edition. By now, they deserve a 3! Goodness knows, they could easily fill up a 2nd disc just with retrospective stuff that's already been done. At least Paramount could put all their interviews and stuff on that 2nd disc along with that VH1 Behind the Music / Reunion (whatever that special was, but most people remember it - it was that good. Even I don't really like the movie and I couldn't stop watching it) or E! True Hollywood Story (I think they did one for Grease, but hey, how about some footage from Travolta and Olivia's??).
Darn you Paramount. But... I did get a glance at their extras for the upcoming Pet Sematary and Dead Zone special DVD's... Holy cow! They're working on something over there at PHE... Sorrily for Grease fans, it's not Grease.

Lazario, have you seen the specs list? 2-disc set or not, the features sound entertaining. I expect we'll learn quite a bit about the making of the film from both the video supplements (which total roughly an hour and a half) and the commentary track. I've been collecting DVDs long enough to know that there are single discs out there that have more substantial features than 2-disc sets. The main reason why I always hope for 2-discs is because a) the film can breathe on its own on disc one, and b) a second disc can hold more features. Grease, though, seems to be an exception. Paramount's really packed it into a single disc, which worries me only because it may cause compression artifacts in the main feature. If all of the same features that's on the disc now were transferred to disc two like the UK's, would you still be annoyed with Paramount?
Well, Disneykid, I think Lazario's main point is there's already lots of content out there, which should be included on the release. I agree, especially as Viacom owns Paramount and VH1. Fox even licenced a segment of a VH1 Behind the Music episode for their Rocky Horror Picture Show DVD.
I mean, look at the timings of some of those interviews. 2 minutes? What can a person say in 2 minutes or so? "Hello - Statement 1, Statement 2, Goodbye" And one of those statements is probably "Yeah, I'm really excited to be here."
I know I'm hard to please* but if you have a documentary which (a) works and (b) probably contains contributions from people sadly no longer with us, why not use it? Especially if you already own the rights? Even it it's in addition to an all-new documentary.
---
* Here I am bemoaning the lack of archive documentries on the Greese release (Wa-hay, it rhymes) and I'm disappointed that the Reeves Superman releases don't have all-new documentries (I mean, even Batman and Robin got an all-new making of - even if some of it was an extended apology)
