Oh, why would anyone butcher the plastic? I just pull the cover out and cut...

If I was butchering plastic with it, I might draw the line. I thought people just didn't want to ruin their paper back cover?

I butchered the plastic on my Snow White VHS once and then figured out that all I had to do was just pull the paper up and cut. Cutting out a POP tab to save money or get free things doesn't bother me at all as long as it doesn't affect the cover artwork at all which it usually won't.
