It was originally released in the US as The Great Mouse Detective

US

Working Title: Basil of Baker Street
1986: Original Theatrical Release: The Great Mouse Detective
1992 (February) Theatrical Re-release: The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective
1992 (July) Home Video: The Great Mouse Detective

Overseas:

Original Theatrical Release: Basil the Great Mouse Detective
Home Video: Basil the Great Mouse Detective
The only legit name over the feature is the one I marked in red. as it was it was called when it came out in the country it was "intended" for thus I relay do not want the European titles (as is on the current european DVD) so could any one be so kind too post an frame grab of the titles as they appears on the film it self in this new mystery in the mist edition.

Well, it's finally out in The Netherlands and I'm glad about this! But I still have two big complaints, and yes, I know this has been talked about at lenght on UD, but I *still* need to vent!

How hard is it to produce a cover with the characters looking on-model?! I mean, you've got a whole studio full of animators and there's not one who can properly draw Dawson and Olivia? Especially Olivia doesn't look anything like in the film! How could anyone have approved of this? It's really off-putting. I almost resisted buying this because of it. At least they didn't call it 'Mystery in the mist edition' in Holland.

The other reason for nearly not buying this is, of course, the lack of proper bonus features. I mean, it's bad enough that Disney treats its 1980's movies like shit, but why drop extra's that were already on the Gold Collection dvd? I can understand them not wanting to make new features, but why drop old ones?! What's "special" about this edition? The slipcover?

Hours? Try days!

That slipcover is so shiny- it has dozens and dozens of functions. I could bring it everywhere I go. Is it waterproof? Then I can take it in the shower with me. I would love it real good, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxYLawoh ... 18#t=4m08s

That slipcover also works great for redirecting sunrays when you dont have your glasses handy :D

Anyway, I too found this new edition rather barebones and therefore I kept on with my gold collection ,I did however manage to get my hands on that new slipthingy....
The gold collection is even worse, talking off-model

Great articles, thanks for sharing. There has always been something about The Great Mouse Detective that I really like, and I hope one day it gets a proper release on Blu-ray.

Well, you never know. It might get a release sooner than you think. ;)

 I got excited for a second!

I'd read that the restorations done to both this film and The Black Cauldron for their DVD releases are pretty much HD ready, so who knows? Maybe we'll have a repeat of the Alice scenario (DVD release only) and the Blu-ray edition will pop up sometime in the near future.

I know that Basil and The Black Cauldron aren't quite as popular as Alice, but I wouldn't completely rule out Blu-ray releases eventually.

Eventually, no. I would think that every animated movie would be released on Blu-ray, eventually. It's mostly just a matter of when, and how much effort is used.
They don't have to go all out with the grain removal for these movies (in fact, I preferred it if they left it alone on all of their movies shot on film). But new 4K scans, also for preservation's sake, would really help benefit the picture quality of these movies. Yes, they're dark and dreary to begin with, and that shouldn't be altered, but at least have them look like film. Also, throw in some bonus features. The Black Cauldron, for instance, is already Disney's dark horse, so they might as well add some insightful bonus features to give the complete making of the movie. But they probably will never do that.

You are more right then I bet you know. Disney Home Entertainment does have the intention of giving every animated classic the "Blu-ray" treatment ultimately. How good will each be? Who can say, although it can't be any worse then the "Father of the Bride" Blu-ray they came out with recently.
