is it me or did the older editions transfer look more colorful? :?

Anyway, I am still getting this! At lease SOME of the grain is gone which is a good thing. Would have loved a 2-Disc Set like Bambi, or Snow White BUT YOU KNOW DISNEY!

Did you read the review? Then you know it's not just you! Though "colorful" may not be the best way to put it.

I don't care if the color is "brighter" because I can brighten my TV screen, so it will look brighter! :D

Oh oops, sorry. I meant to say that the color isn't brighter, because I can brighten my TV screen.

Riiight, but in this case, darker is better. It's not like your screen is going to be black. The new Dumbo transfer won't require you to adjust your brightness levels.

Hey all,

Received my Sunday ads, ad it seems that $19.99 is the quote unquote going price. However I beleive Target, Shopko, and KMart said low price guarantee.

Questino being; Does anyone know what the instore prices are for Target, Shopko, or Kmart?

Thanks

Sometimes you can tell what the price is for a certian DVD even if it says "Low Price" in the ad by virtue of them puting the picture in the ad next to a DVD that has the same price. That said, Dumbo is $16.99 at Target - I think.

Thanks for the review, Aaron; nicely done. It is unfortunate that Disney couldn't bring this up to the mantle of the Platinum line in terms of transfer quality, especially since it is the only First Golden Age film not included in the Platinum lineup with the addition of Pinocchio and Fantasia. But I will still (more or less) happily add this to my collection tomorrow since I don't have the 60th Anniversary Edition. As a huge Phantom of the Opera phanatic, I am saddened at the loss of the Michael Crawford video in particular -- why they could not have included it in addition to the new one, I don't know -- but alas, I'm buying the DVD for the movie, not for the extras. The extras are extras, so I'll let it go.

I also haven't seen the movie in years -- I have it on VHS but my tolerance for watching movies on VHS is slim and I haven't watched my VHS of it in I don't remember how long. That has happened before with some animated classics, and when it has it has always been a tremendous treat for me to rediscover them with the DVD, so I am very much looking forward to that.

Alas, I fell asleep waiting for the review to be posted. I shouldn't have waited lying in my bed, but instead sitting at my desk. Anyways, great review Aaron! It really convinced me to get Dumbo tomorrow. At first glance to the picture of the cards, I actually thought we would be getting a fold out chapter insert, but I guess not.

I'm going to get Dumbo soon, when my dad is finished with his lunch. I'm going to Target where it is $16.99. I just got done babysitting, and got $18.00, so I think I'll use that. Now I have enough to get Brother Bear 2 which I am very much excited for!

Thanks for the review Aaron but I think I will wait to upgrade for Blu Ray. Seems like a bit of a waste to go for an intermediate step.

I have to confess that the new transfer had me a little concerned when I first read the review as well. Normally when Disney has talked about restoration the previous print was very dark and the new restoration was much brighter. To me, the screencaps for the 60th anniversary look niced than the new transfer. I don't mean to challenge Aaron at all because he is consistently correct in his evaluations. The conclusion that I have come to is that Disney doesn't ever downgrade their films. New releases are either neutral or they are a positive improvement. Based on Disney's history I believe that the Big Top Edition is an improvement and it has helped restore the picture to its original state. I bought the film this morning and I look forward to watching it tonight. I am just very surprised Disney didn't restore this film like they did Bambi and some other titles. Dumbo has always been one of Disney's most potent titles. The simple style seems very appropriate for a circus film.

Scratch that post. My mom didn't want to take me, so she is picking it up for me. Now I have to wait longer. I was going to finish reading Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men but Dumbo is the most important thing right now. I'll just have to finish reading the book tomorrow. And do all of the questions. Doesn't tomorrow sound like fun?
