I thought of that, as well as the possibility of Alicia being bisexual, but both options seem too complicated for this film. Whatever it is, I just hope we get an explanation.

Yeah, it seems something too adult for a film like this, but I can't think of other options apart from the ones we've mentioned.

This movie will definitely be controversial. Openly lesbian couple who kiss and has a child together? Oh, boy. Will the brand power of Toy Story and Disney's misleading marketing overcome the backlash and make it a success? It remains to be seen. Honestly, I think it would be better if Disney were upfront about the LGBT elements in the film's advertising, because otherwise conservative parents may claim they were duped into going to see the film and demand their money back like what happened with ParaNorman.

I agree that it's going to be controversial (while it shouldn't be) considering that the majority of Americans actually support the bill:

Not to mention the rest of the world. There's too much focus on the US, but there are as much conservatives, if not more, in other Western countries, and not to mention China and the Middle East which would probably ban the film.

In some countries the film will be banned, in others it will be censored, just like what happened with Marvel's Eternals. But none of the countries that usually ban such content are big markets for Disney (besides China). I think the film's success will depend on how it performs in the U.S. Interestingly, most Americans believe Disney is wrong to oppose the bill according to a recent survey.

China has been less receptive to Hollywood films lately, with Disney being one of the worst hit studios as none of last year's Marvel movies were approved for release there and Encanto and Jungle Cruise did minuscule numbers there. So they probably don't expect Lightyear to make much in China, anyway. They're also boycotting Russia right now, which has also been known to censor LGBTQ content in media. I think these played a small factor in Disney's decision here.

Those parents getting angry at that line in ParaNorman will always be funny to me, because they sat through an entire movie about being tolerant of others different than you and not treating them as a danger to society (a message that's not exactly subtle, either) and yet didn't learn a thing. I've always wondered if the director included that line about the character's boyfriend partly as a test to see who in the audience actually paid attention to what the film was saying.

• Confirmation that the LGBT character is Alicia Hawthorne and also that she's Izzy's grandmother and not her mother from a tweet by the author of the Lightyear middle grade novel:
I'm a Floridian & the author of IZZY HAWTHORNE: DESTINY AWAITS. I'M SO HAPPY PIXAR PUT the affection scene btwn Izzy's grannies back into #Lightyear. Remember: the most legendary Space Ranger is a Blk queer woman!

• New synopsis from the back cover of the Russian version of the same novel:
Izzy was born on T-Kani One a planet inhabited by ravenous plants and giant bugs. Well, it's also home to a small handful of humans. Many, many years ago they came here by accident because of an accident on a space expedition and were never able to leave. The captain of that expedition-- Buzz Lightyear--was Grandma Izzy's best friend. They say he disappeared into space a long time ago, trying to right an old mistake and bring the expedition back with a bang.

But one day Buzz returns. And he...hasn't aged a bit! But how can that be? And why is he back now, when T-Kani One is being attacked by alien robots? And could Izzy, who has yet never left the planet (or her home base), help the great hero save everyone?

• More merch from the movie in these videos. Among other things, the new toys reveal Taika Waititi's character is called Mo Morrison.

But how can Izzy be the granddaughter when Izzy was a baby when Buzz got lost and only twenty years have passed since then? And there's still the issue of parentage between Alicia and Izzy. Are they going to have Izzy's mother be adopted and blame any similarities between Alicia and Izzy to coincidence?

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense.

I don't know, but there's a strong resemblance between the two; I think they have to be biologically related. I hope we get more details soon and our doubts are solved.

I have no idea what to think about this film right now, I'm mostly indifferent to it. Would have preferred a Buzz space adventure with Woody tagging along in the franchise's usual style but whatever...There is something that's been bugging the hell out of me since day one though... that robot cat's design looks ...awfully familiar. :eyebrow:

an orange cat...
with a cream colored muzzle
and a cream belly
and big round eyes
and a blue collar with a round gold tag

all that's missing is the brown stripes... :P

I know it sticks out to me more b/c Oliver is a sentimental favorite of mine and its basically been forgotten by the studio, I'm sure the staff at Pixar don't even remember that the film exists...which is probably why no one caught the similarities. :milkbuds:

Did you just use cream belly and big round eyes as unique design aspects? Heck, would it be a cat at all if it didnt have big round eyes? lol

Well, there haven't been that many orange cats in WDAS or Pixar movies, so I don't think it's weird to compare this cat to Oliver. To be honest, I've also found its design familiar since I first saw it, but I'm not sure what it reminds me of. Speaking of it, wasn't there an orange cat in Alien? Could they have chosen this particular sidekick for Buzz as a reference to that film?
