The 2008-09 AND 2010 Doctor Who (& Spin-offs) Thread
Well, Jessica Hynes' (nee Stevenson) return may be explained with this snippet from the Sun newspaper:
And Spaced actress Jessica Hynes also returns to the show.
Jess, who previously starred as Joan Redfern, plays writer Verity Newman — after bosses failed to tempt Harry Potter author JK Rowling with the role.
Verity — named after show creators Verity Lambert and Sydney Newman — will anger the doc, played by David Tennant, by releasing his book Journal Of Impossible Things.
I just had to leave the last bit un-spoilerised to excite Escapay. My Character Options Journal is on order!

I'm excited for this special now (will it be the one with Lindsay Duncan or the two-parter? ETA: never mind, I just read here that it's the two-part special).
Also, I'm wondering if Verity Newman is publishing the book as Fiction or Non-Fiction.

I'm glad that they're addressing what has happened to the book, as it's not addressed in "The Family of Blood". For all we know, Miss Redfern could have burned it once the Doctor left. Glad to see she (and I'm guessing her future generations) kept it all these years. Well, either that or someone found it and thought "my god, this should be published, it's genius!"

Well, on Breakfast TV this morning RTD revealed that the "companion" for the Tennant's final 2 parter is... Bernard Cribbins! (Perhaps Donna won't be as involved as was once thought?)
A man in his 80's as a companion in a fast paced, science-fantasy TV series? Only in Doctor Who. And that's why we love it.

Wilfred! Yay!
The Doctor's companions since Martha seem to be getting older now: Astrid, Donna, Jackson, Adelaide, and now Wilfred, with Lady Christina being the the lone exception. So much for Sarah Jane's "You can tell you’re getting older, because your assistants are getting younger"!
I'd love for the Eleventh Doctor to have an older companion. Someone who'd mother him because she can't believe a 26 year old is really 945 years old (more or less).

Whoo! First of all, I love Wilf. That man can make you cry just by standing in the background and I can't get enough of him.
Second, this explains why Catherine was seen on set, without her being companion again. Maybe she won't remember after all... (seriously, RTD brought Rose back, leave Donna's tragic ending alone).
Very excited about this news... But we've also still got Planet of the Dead next Saturday!

Well, reading between the lines, a descendent of Joan's finds the Journal of Impossible things, publishes it (As non-fiction I guess; after all, some stuff mentioned in it, has been true and reported in the WHO universe, such as the existence of Daleks who are in the pages we saw on TV - Amazon now have no delivery date for the replica Journal of Impossible things so I can't see if other stuff is mentioned, such as the events of The Christmas Invasion for example), and I guess this will be the trigger that starts Donna remembering, I wouldn't be surprised if Wilf somehow contacts the Doctor because of the book...
Speculative Spoiler
It does appear, as long ago rumoured the Master is back, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Master baits/encourages Verity to publish the book, knowing about Donna. We last saw the Master interested in forming a "New" Gallifrey on Earth, and how better than by studying/replicating/curing Human-TimeLord MetaCrisis?

Well, I purchased Companions and Allies today, and what a disappointment. Firstly, it covers classic as well as new Who, which may seem to be a plus point, but it means "allies" are noticeably missing. While I can forgive this to some extent in the classic series, it is in my mind unforgivable for New Who.
One thing that impressed me the most about the revamped series is how impressively it has constantly created fresh new characters - more or less each and every week, and how strongly defined they are. To have a character like Jabe reduced to a single paragraph, almost in passing is frankly an insult to both Russell T Davies who wrote her and to Yasmin Bannerman who played her so perfectly. Even the Face of Boe - the freaking Face of Boe, only gets one boxed out paragraph. As far as I can see from a quick flick, Nancy from The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances get's no specific mention, nor does Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare or Agatha Christie. (Sally Sparrow of course, gets a whole page (yes, the Sally Sparrow backlash has begun from this individual!), as does Joan Redfern for some strange reason? (They're laying the groundwork for Verity Newman?).
Interestingly, it ends with Lady Christina De Souza in a mostly spoiler free page (and the same page confirms Captain Magambo in Planet of the Dead is "our" reality's Magambo, and has no knowledge of events from Turn Left - so perhaps Rose isn't coming back for Tennant's finale as such).
I really wish this book just stuck to New Who, and actually celebrated the supporting cast of so many stories, skillfully written and played by talented individuals.

Well my Journal of Impossible things came today, and I'll let DoctorWhoToys.Net do the talking:
Overview
http://doctorwhotoys.net/journalofimpossiblethings.htm
Review
http://doctorwhotoys.net/journalpages.htm
I'll just say that from a brief flick though the pages two things are immediately apparent
1. The amount of detail on each and every page is incredible for a prop that was shown so little on screen.
2. The Doctor's handwriting is f**king appalling. If "John Smith" marked your schoolwork, you'd never be able to read any of his comments!
I'll have to sit down and try and decipher it tonight.

I found some of it a bit easy to read, here's what I figured out from the second picture.
Starting from 2 and half lines in (roughly)
from eggs. And a pig is running past me, and he has ---- too. And there's so much ---- and planning, and it's always for ----.
*Under the picture of the...alien thingy....* Not too sure about this though.
I find they had ---- around mix r--- --- home ----
The above sentence was a bit hard at first I thought the first blank word was "bolts" and the second "races" and the final word "black" but I really can't tell. Perhaps Netty will have more luck than I did

He has his own Captain Jack suit? And he wears it when he goes to Tesco's!
The whole bit about not seeing a script, but having had many speaking parts over the years confused me.

The BBC have today announced that David Tennant will be appearing in two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures starting this September. It's not a cameo - David will be starring as The Doctor throughout the 2-part story.
Reading between the lines it will be the opening 2-parter, as the news strongly suggests he will appear in TSJA before the November Doctor Who special "The Waters of Mars".
So with The Doctor, more screen time for K9 and a rumoured return of The Brigadier too this series of TSJA - not to mention BBC1's Torchwood "event" there's plenty to keep us going until the Eleventh Doctor returns next April.

Woohoo for the Tenner appearing on SJA!
And in US news, Variety reports that BBC AMERICA has first-run broadcast rights for the Specials! So far, only "The Next Doctor" is scheduled (June 27, 9 pm), and "Planet of the Dead" will be in July (date tba).
Also, there's a new animated adventure for Tenth Doctor this year!
From Doctor Who News:
A second animated story starring David Tennant as the Doctor will be broadcast later this year.
"Dreamland", written by Phil Ford, will comprise seven episodes of roughly six minutes each. This will air as part of the BBC's red button service and Children's BBC.
Also appearing in the story are Georgia Moffett ("The Doctor's Daughter") playing a character called Cassie Rice, Lisa Bowerman ("Survival" and the Big Finish Bernice Summerfield series), and David Warner (Tron, Time Bandits). Warner is also no stranger to Doctor Who, having played the Time Lord himself in two Big Finish audio plays released in 2003 and 2008.
"Dreamland" follows 2007's animated adventure "The Infinite Quest", currently available on DVD.
Ford has written for Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, and his other 2009 Doctor Who story, The Waters of Mars (co-written with Russell T Davies) is slated to broadcast in November. Directing "Dreamland" is Gary Russell.
More details will be forthcoming.

Well, I'm a bit late with this and anyone who cares will know by now the 11th Doctor's first companion has been cast - Scottish Karan Gillan. This Guardian article is not so much about the casting, but mild speculation on what she needs to be:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/tvand ... matt-smith
I also got the latest Doctor Who Magazine yesterday, and interestingly it has a little nugget of information about this year.
Apparently The Doctor in Sarah Jane (revealed to be the mid season episodes 5 and 6) was "Secret project No. 1", the Animated Story was "Secret Project No. 2" and... there's still a "Secret Project No. 3" to be announced!

She looks cute. And is ginger!
However, I wasn't too keen on the article's tone about the DW companion having "strayed too far" after Sarah Jane. I loved Leela, Romana I, and Nyssa! Romana II, Tegan, Peri, and Mel are good too (well, I haven't seen much of Mel), but they certainly weren't the "wrong" type of companions until Ace came along.
Anyway, I'm glad for young Ms. Gillam, though a little part of me is upset that the next companion isn't Sally Sparrow.

Australia has a Torchwood teaser which plays up the Doctor Who connection, something the BBC aren't doing here (part of showing it on BBC1 over 5 nights is to promote it as an "event" and appeal to a new audience as well as its existing audience).
However, I quite like this teaser. It gives nothing away, but I like the tone.

The best order (IMO) would be
Doctor Who series one and two
Torchwood series one
Doctor Who series three
Torchwood series two
Doctor Who series four
There are indeed crossovers, this order ensures you'll always know what's going on
As for Torchwood, I like the trailer, but somehow can't get excited for Children of Earth. Maybe it's because I still haven't gotten over the loss of our beloved Toshiko, maybe it's because the story doesn't seem to grab me... I've read the overall storylines of the upcoming radio specials and thought one of those (can't remember its title or story right now
) would make a better story for the event series... But hopefully I'll be proven wrong.
Doctor Who hasn't been all I've hoped this year either. I was slightly disappointed bij The Next Doctor, mostly because of the ending. I never really liked the premise of Planet of the Dead, as I don't care for stories set in deserts, and ended up not really liking that one either. Not saying they were bad, but I wanted something more. Hopefully The Waters of Mars will give us that, the preview seemed very promising. And of course the last double-special keeps getting better with every bit of info we get.
