Hi! I'm writing from France and the review of The french edition has been done. http://www.dvdrama.com/news.php?16863
http://www.dvdrama.com/rw_fiche-6803-.php
It says that it is a disappointement, disappointing because of the others disney movies editions which are better.
The movie is supposed to be restored but the 1.66 format respected from the previous DVD is not respected for this new one (1.78 now). The colors seem to be worse. Finally, there is no mention about the restoration in the bonus material as they did in the previous editions of the others movies.
I hope that it will help you all.
In the second link, you'll find the french menus as well. :)

Is it true that the original French version with Claire Guyot and Henri Salvador is on this DVD in France
Disney is awesome, and was the biggest part of my childhood.

Wow! Check out how amazing the new restoration is in these two shots! I knew they could clean it up, but this looks amazing. I never really liked the Beach Scene, Ariel just didn't really look like herself.

The first screen cap is from the PE. The second is from the LI. The new version has more image, so it was actually the Limited Issue that was the wrong aspect ratio and the Platinum Edition is correct. Also, in the screen cap from the LI, Ariel's skin has a yellowish tint. The PE looks more like skin color. From the pictures I've seen of the new restoration in the other topic, I'd say the new restoration looks really well done and all of the colors seem to be more accurate than the LI was.

Are you not able to sit down and talk with them? What will happen if your parents find out you spent money on this DVD? If it was me, I'd try to talk to them instead of having to try to hide a DVD from them for the next several years....

Worse comes to worse, when you are 18 years of age and move out on your own, you can buy as many Disney DVDs as you want.

Well I don't think there's much of an explanation you can give for owning a DVD. It's not like you can just say you bought it by accident or anything. I think you should just explain to your parents that Disney is for everyone. I hope they realize that it was adults that created these movies. No offense to your parents or anything, I just find that very odd.

You saw what happened to all of the stuff Ariel hid from her father, King Triton. Do you want your parents destroying your DVD? Just kidding. I have a friend who's parents are very closed minded and once they are set in their ways, there is little anyone can say to change their mind. I know how hard it can be to talk to parents, so this is what I would do. Wal-Mart has a HUGE supply of cheap DVD's(around $5.99). I would pick 1 or 2 that your parents would approve of you owning. Buy that WITH "The Little Mermaid." Remove both discs from TLM and dispose of the case. Place the discs in the 2 cheap movies, and place the real discs on top of them. Be careful to choose 2 movies your parents would not go to borrow so they don't find your discs in it. And then I guess watch the movie while they are asleep or something... wow. I feel like I'm giving you instructions on how to hide porn from your parents. lol.

Also, if you want the cover art, you could just by 1 movie they wouldn't have interest in seeing but approve of you owning, remove that cover art, and place it over TLM's cover art under the plastic of the DVD case. You would have to get rid of the slip cover, but it's just shiny embossed cardboard anyways.

I know about the re-dubbings because I collect the foreign Disney songs and I have two versions of most of the songs in Euro French

My parents, in an extremely odd and unexpected event, said I could get the DVD.

It was my DAD, who is so ridiculously anti-Disney it's not funny, who said he wanted to get it.

Probably because I freak out during 'Poor Unfortunate Souls'. :p

wow, your right about one thing. it sounds a lot like your telling him how to hide porn. come on, just suck it up. Im asking for the little mermaid myself as a christmas gift. and Im already finding it a bit embarrassing when it came up in conversation once, but hey, Im not going to go to extremes and try to hide it. I may not watch the movie as openly as I might something like aladdin, but when it comes to actually owning it, dont sweat it too much. maybe try and explain how this movie brought disney back from a dark period of sorts in animation. it jump started animation enough so we could later on get to the really good stuff like the lion king and aladdin.

random thought: I wonder why the little mermaid thought of as so girly anyway? guys like girls, so why wouldnt guys like movies staring girls? is it the underwater thing? the singing?

I do think its a good idea to buying other dvds with it though, might help ballance it out. but make sure they are movies you actually want, not just throw aways that you would trash.

I don't find it embarrasing to buy The Little Mermaid or any other movies like Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella because everyone knows I collect Disney DVD's anyway. The Little Mermaid however is some what of a different story though compared to buying Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella or even Beauty and the Beast. Well I was born in 1988 so when I was like 4-7 I used to have a "crush" on Ariel and The Little Mermaid was easily one of my favorite Disney movies(my favorite is a tie between Aladdin and Peter Pan) so I think some of my family members mite say something smart or embarrasing to remind me how I used to be in "love" with Ariel when I come home with this DVD lol, but Im buying X-Men 3 the same day anyways so it's not like I'll come home with just The Little Mermaid.
As for why people everywhere(not including Disney fans) think The Little Mermaid is aimed for little girls or is considered "girly" I think its because its in the fairy tale catagory and its not so much that its underwater or that theres singing in it because a Disney movie could easily have all that in it anyway with out being known to the general public(non-Disney fans) as a movie for girls. But the thematics are associated with Love and Romance and the core of the story is so Ariel can be with Eric and have a happy ending which are usually involved with why some movies are considered "chick flicks". For me personally I never view or watch a movie and before it say "oh thats a chick flick" or "thats girl movie" I watch the movie and make my final decision at the end and hey if it is aimed for girls then it is, I mite not like it and if I do then who cares? But im generally a person that likes action adventure or horror movies. There goes my 2 cents lol.

oh the second paragraph was a response to Kyle's "random thought: I wonder why the little mermaid thought of as so girly anyway? guys like girls, so why wouldnt guys like movies staring girls? is it the underwater thing? the singing?" forgot to quote him lol.

not sure if this is relevent, but look at aladdin. his first wish is to become a prince. why? to get the girl of his dreams. romance seems to be a big thing in nearly all disney classics.

Because unlike the others in the Fab 4, The Little Mermaid is almost entirely female-centered. Your protagonist and antagonist are both female. The strongest and most developed characters are female. Unlike Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, The Little Mermaid is the only one in which there really isn't an equality in the lead male/lead female dynamic. In BATB, you've got two major protagonists (Belle and Beast, and even Gaston to an extent). In Aladdin, the central figure is Aladdin, but Jasmine is just as developed as he is. In The Lion King, Simba and Nala are pretty much one and the same, except for gender. With The Little Mermaid, sure, Prince Eric gets some screentime, but it doesn't develop his character much as he's either seen enjoying the sea, worrying over a mute Ariel, or under a spell. He isn't given as much growth as everyone else. The whole story is about Ariel, and that's probably why many consider TLM to be the "girly" film of the four.

Any guy can watch Aladdin and think, "Man, Aladdin's so badass, I wanna be like him!". But you'll hardly come across someone who says, "Man, Prince Eric sure is lucky to have a hottie like Ariel for a wife".

I don't think of TLM as a girly movie at all. Nobody ever said that this movie was made just for girls, it's made for everybody.

A perfect example is the show Desperate Housewives. I (a guy) am a big fan of the show (enough to buy the season sets on DVD) and my dad watches it too. Entertainment is entertainment...and it's made for everybody...men and women alike.
