Yet it is one of the 14 top selling animated Disney films of all time. I guess you're right, there is no appeal whatsoever...

This still makes me pretty furious. Fantasia/2000 definitely should have been re-released by now and yet it has to be pushed back because it is the Pixar man's favorite film. I never liked Lasseter taking over Disney, and now I dislike him even more.
I never said it had no appeal or denied that it is a classic film worthy of a great release. All I'm saying is that I can understand if Disney has removed it from the Platinum line because of what the average consumer has come to expect from the line. Got it? That's ALL I was saying. Yet you and Rudy Matt feel the need to pick a fight with me in this forum based on something that is not a big deal. I love Fantasia and am anticipating buying it when it comes to Blu-Ray. I don't have anything against the film.

You all need to understand that we here at UD are the minority. We know that the Platinum line was created around the 10 best selling Disney films, but your average consumer doesn't know that and that is not what the term "Platinum Edition" means to them. To them, it is a moniker given to Disney films that are guaranteed to satisfy their entire family. That is the definition that Fantasia doesn't fit into because it does bore kids. Dumbo is a charming film with a linear story, and one that many have complained about not being treated properly by Disney. They finally put it on the pedestal where it belongs and what do they get? And outcry of rage from the majority of us.

Also, you don't know that Lasseter had anything to do with WDSHE deciding to release Dumbo instead of Fantasia. That is something that somebody speculated. He doesn't run the company, just the animation division. I do agree that Fantasia is due for another release since it will have been 10 years in 2010, but they waited longer than 7 years to rerelease Pinocchio as well. That time frame obviously isn't something they strictly adhere to.

I truly think that Fantasia will released by Spring 2011. If it has been dropped from the Platinum line, than we will probably have it sooner, but if not I don't think that Disney will do it as the Fall 2010 release when Beauty and the Beast is hitting theaters in February.

 goofystitch, though I feel bad that you had to keep explaining yourself over and over again. I understood it the first time I read your first post, don't see how anyone else couldn't.

Fantasia is magnificent. To most Disney fans, it is one of the most highly-regarded motion pictures that the man and studio made. But to a casual viewer - you know, someone who doesn't spend their time on or are even aware of sites like this - it's just that Disney film that everyone makes a big deal out of. Disney knows this. The fans know this. Giving it "Platinum" status and putting it into a line that - as much as most Disney fans refuse to believe - is ultimately geared towards families is more an insult than a compliment.

So it makes sense for Disney to remove it and give it another release of its own (if that is indeed what they are doing). They take the film seriously enough to make this release appeal to those who will appreciate it and already know what they're going in to. Better to give it a treatment that's a class of its own and that it deserves rather than stick it with a group of films that's had uneven quality in some titles. Because like I said, the Platinum line - as much as we don't want to believe it - is still ultimately is geared towards families.

If being a "Platinum" were to truly represent everything an animation enthusiast wanted in a home video release, there would be no games, there would be no sing-alongs, there would be no music videos featuring Disney Channel's latest flavour of the week. Essentially, it would be what Fantasia got in 2000. And hopefully what it will get again in its next home video release, whenever that may be.

This isn't a dig at the line or the films that got that treatment. Obviously they are some of Disney's better DVDs, but unfortunately, Disney knows it has to appeal to a wide variety of fans with only one release. They can't make it completely geared more towards the animation fans. Some families won't want to sit through a 90-minute documentary and/or multiple commentaries and featurettes. And they can't have it devoted entirely to stuff a family can do. Most of the complaints here at UD are about the useless games that they have no need for and assume kids don't enjoy playing. So there has to exist some happy medium between the two, which is what the Platinum (and really most any Disney DVD) is. The more popular the title (which, according to Disney, is based on previous home video sales), the better treatment it will get. But even then, there will be some titles that just can't appeal to both no matter what you do. So taking Fantasia out of the Platinum line and giving it its own special release is a better idea than the possibility of the excellent Anthology set from 2000 simply getting repeated, but now with the addition of a JoBro lyrical rendition of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and games like "Kill the Broom!", "Learn How To Conduct!", and "Fun with <strike>Language</strike> Music".

I think it's obvious Fantasia got bumped because of that stupid Nicholas Cage move coming next year....the only consolation is that Beauty and the Bad Animaton is being pushed back farther away from my eyeballs.

Are you kidding or are you being serious? Do you actually think the animation in B&tB is bad?? :?

It's not ALL bad...

I think BATB is one of the greatest Disney classics BUT it does have some shoddy animation in certain scenes. Among other things, Belle's appearance frequently changes and some background visuals & static characters are poorly detailed.

When I revisit the Disney cannon I notice how every so often a character looks just 'wrong' or things are out of proportion or the animation is lazy. That's traditional animation for you - they're not perfect and there is always a budget which will and does affect the outcome. I actually think it adds to their charm!

Actually, just had an idea for a new thread: Lazy animation! Perhaps we could post screen caps of our 'favourite' not so spectacular animation from the Disney catalogue!

Anyone up for that?

Matt :)

Bad? Try awful. The movie defines the word "off-model" (not to mention low budget secondary characters)

This Awful Terrible Beauty and the Beast if we are refering to Belle's Magical World then yes I completly agree 100% maybe even in the sequel themed Christmas DTV...but when awful Disney Animation comes to my mind at first I woud think Phineas and Ferb or Emperor's New Groove and the Emeperor's New School...I like the Emperor's New Groove and School are good stories.....just differ animation.....or Teacher's Pet that was pretty bad animation and Beauty and the Beast Looks a lot better than Teacher's Pet or Emperor's New Groove

I agree with Julian....I would like hear/read the logic (if any) behind Beauty and the Beast's "bad animation"

If Disney were to clean up the animation on Beauty and the Beast you'd just evoke Marky and the other whiners so they can't win either way and best solution is to just leave it.

I am so happy that Dumbo is finally going to get a good DVD treatment (fingers crossed... who knows what Disney could decide to do with the banner) but I am also annoyed that I must now wait even longer to own the only animated classic I don't yet have a DVD of on my shelf.

But I totally agree with the theory that that stupid live action Sorcerers Apprentice is probably to blame. You know how much Disney loves a tie-in. It's why I'm expecting Alice in Wonderland to come back to DVD/Blu Ray at the same time Burton's is first release to home video.

I don't own DUMBO on any format at the moment (partly because the story has always been soooo sad for me); but may spring for the Blu-ray...

I could see them releasing Dumbo as a Platinum in February and the Fantasias as Diamonds in March. They could be continuing both lines in some way.
Anyone else agree?
I actually went to the site, and saw their news that Dumbo was the next "Diamond". It seems they're giving some other misinformation as well, like the fact they never mentioned, for all intensive purposes, Fantasia still being it's march date.

And complements to goofystitch and scaps for making such great posts!

Well, if Dumbo is the next "Diamond" lets hope that Fantasia is the October Diamond of 2010.

Though i'm sure it won't be.
They'll re-release Alice as the October "Diamond" 2010 cos
Tim's Alice will be out on Blu-Ray.
Which I don't mind that much cos I like Alice.

But delaying Fantasia is really upsetting to me.

Really, now, the option is what March 2011?
But Beauty & The Beast will have just finished at the movies by then!?
So of course that'll be re-released, so Fantasia will get bumped again.

Basically, I say release Fantasia as some mega expensive collectors set that only the appreciative would buy and enjoy.

Make it a Disney Treasure.
No one but actual fans buy Disney Treasures, and we buy them in the truckloads.

Make Fantasia a Disney Treasure set with collectible art cards, replica programme from opening night, some slightly newer special features from the other DVD, make it grand, exclusive and rare.

Just release it.

I love Fantasia because i love classical music and only love classical music because of hearing it in Fantasia when I was young.

I only enjoy animation because of Disney and the animation from Fantasia upwards that I was able to enjoy when everything was released on good ole VHS.

I can't imagine the flash-in-the-pan Hannah Montana watching iPod crowd would even know what was going on if Fantasia was shown to them. They'd be too busy Twittering WTF or Facebooking that they are missing American Idol, rather than enjoying a masterpiece of music and film.

I can't imagine little Britney or Debbie-Ray seeing Fantasia at Best Buy and saying "hay ma, lets get this a Fantasia thingy"

No no.

To solve that horrid scene, just bring out Fantasia for those that can afford and appreciate a masterpiece.

By all means bring out everything else, just don't deprive a generation of Fantasia.

So quick sticks Disney.

We certainly don't need 10th Anniversary Editions of Tigger Movies or Pooh Saves Christmas from the Local Mall Developers...

We need Fantasia.
It's been long overdue.
Nearly 10 years now. Dear me.
Where does the time go?

Has it been stated anywhere if both the Platinum & Diamond lines will both run or is the Diamond line taking over the for the Platinum? I hope there's only one line, two would be too confusing.

Disney Home Entertainment is currently planning to release the classic animated tale Dumbo on Blu-ray Disc and DVD sometime in February 2010. They've even whipped up a snazzy new contemporary logo to accompany the title.

The special edition release is expected to include some new bonus features that at this time are currently unknown outside of the Mouse House. Once Disney makes a formal announcement I'll be sure to share the details with all of you.

In the meantime, check out an advertising teaser for Dumbo below and mark your calender for the big guy's high definition debut.

It just says Special Edition. I'm thinking that we're still getting Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 as Diamonds.

NO MENTION of the words PLATINUM or DIAMOND... Maybe it's JUST a Special Edition, and Fantasia will STILL be on track for March...

edit: zackisthewalrus, you said it first! LOL
