Seriously though, Fox gets my vote for worst studio of 2K4. The U.S. gets practically bare-bone DVDs of all their big hits, but elsewhere, they're putting out packed 2-Disc sets. Why? For future double-dipping I'm sure. It's just annoying.

Seriously, after putting up with crap for years, I think it is only fair that the US has a taste of what the rest of the world has had to contend with for years.

We, both the UK and Australia and all the other non-US regions, still get many releases months behind the US. Take Lion King for example! That was about 6 months later here. Sure, every country has its exclusives, but I think the US has the biggest range of stuff over all. We still don't have any of the Hannah Barbera/Warner animation stuff (except a few scattered volumes of Looney Tunes. Flintstones are coming I'm told, but they are what - 5 months after the fact?). I could list all of the stuff that is only available in the US, but I'd be here all day. Still, the majority of the non-platinum 2-Disc Disney DVDs haven't been available here (such as Brother Bear, any of the 'Vault' line etc), so I still think the US is a clear winner.

I think the US market is a little too spoiled sometimes. I'd love to have half the stuff you guys get in big discount warehouses available here, but most of it is still not available to us.

Netty, I'd love to have that set if you're buying! Another set we got skimped on was the recent Species SE. We got a one disc here and GB got a 2 disc set. Hrumph! I still don't know why they just do the same release for each region. Two disc special editions for all!

Still, it'd be nice to have a 2-Disc release here in the U.S. instead of One-Disc esp. if the other countries get 2-Disc... (i wonder if that made sense... )

Yup, I now sympathize even more with other regions who've had substandard releases. However, the thing that makes it even worse in this case is that Fox is actually doing the reverse of what they used to do in the U.S. They used to innitially release awesome 2-Disc Collector's Editions for all their hits in Region 1, and then pair them down to 1 disc later on (a practice that isn't too good either). But now they are releasing crappy 1-discs first, and obviously planning to re-release them as 2-Disc sets later.

Nothing is more agrivating than seeing a studio actually purposely take a step backwards in quality.

If's not just AvP, The Day After Tomorrow has an awesome 2 disc release, with a fantastic "real science" documentary and extensive making of feature, I Robot has a similar 2 disc set and even Garfield has a reasonable 2 disc set considering the content of the film. Oddly, none of these 2 disc sets feature the actual film's trailer - what you couldn't even fit it on the second disc Fox?

For that reason I have a soft spot for my LXG 2 disc set. It doesn't have much over the 1 disc US release, but it includes every trailer (US and International) plus every single TV spot. Way to go Fox UK! What happened to the recent releases?

Well, its not just most DVDs international viewers are used to being screwed over. We often get films released late, and to add insult to injury, the UK often gets US hand-me-down theatrical prints in such circumstances. Meaning we get films shown in our cinemas with scratches, dirt prints and other distortions.

I think the reason for the recent trend towards UK early releases (Such as TROY) and 'improved' UK DVD specs and even exclusive collector's sets (see I Robot or Hulk) is because really the studios have already lost the region encoding battle here. I bought a new DVD player to replace the one they broke in our bedroom and without looking I knew right away it would be multi-region straight from the box (and it does PAL > NTSC conversion and vice-versa). Basically the UK branches have to deal with competition and much cheaper prices (thanks to the low dollar exchange rate) from their American couterparts. If American disc represent better value, then we will import. And they can't stop us (personal imports are not, and never will be illegal, in any country).

(As a side note, it's a shame Buena Vista Home Entertainment UK haven't realised this, and are still content to churn out substandard products - why was the commentary missing from their recent UK King Arthur DVDs for example?)

Fox in America has no competition. Hardly anybody imports discs in America. You either buy AvP or you don't. If you want it, you have to buy what they decide to offer you. The only thing Americans can do if they feel hard done to is to get multi-region players of their own and start importing. There's a whole world of DVDs out there, and non-US viewers have been importing since the format began!

The Fox 2 disc sets are available in R3 as well, which is a NTSC format (and are even cheaper then having to stump up for UK sets, given your exchange rate at the moment). It also solves the problem of standards conversion. Now you just need a multi-region player.

Well, Amazon have cancelled by 2 disc tin order. It looks like the tin release is dead. Still, I managed to pre-order the 2 disc set for a ultra-low £13.49!

But then at Best Buy, they had an additional book that came along with the DVD...which was wow, since the book is cool things!

but then...my friend just showed me the AVP LIMITED EDITION GIFT SET which contains an Alien Bust and Predator Bust as well as the neat box!

so, I'll be off to buy that and stop complaining about not having the 2-Disc set.
