song of the south coming to video?dvd!?!
Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook is being quoted as acknowledging that it has received more requests for a DVD release of the movie than any other film. Cook noted that a similar complaint about racial issues was addressed when the studio released World War II material in the Walt Disney Treasures DVD series "through introductions that place the material in context." Cook said that he was "confident" that a similar solution could be found for Song of the South.

Wow! "Song of the South" is considered to release on DVD next year. Before we go any further, I have never in my entire generation would see a Disney movie "Song of the South" in my life. One of the most popular song in that film was "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah". That song was remade by so many artists like the Ray Conniff Singers, the Henry Mancini Chorus, Bing Crosby, Bobby Sox & Blue Jeans and the Jackson 5. This would be a great idea for this DVD. Speaking of the DVD, I was trying to copying it and paste it on the GAC Forums in TTTP about "Song of the South", but I can't do it because I got banned from GAC Forums last week. I can live without posting it on TTTP.

Well if there's anything that will give Disney that final bit of inspiration to release SotS, it will be Universal releasing a movie that capitalizes on its absence. Very interesting indeed. I somehow missed discussion of this new project the first go-round. Thanks for posting. I want to see the trailer for this.

Before we get back to the SOTS discussion, according to the rules on GAC Forums' General Rules of Conduct:JiminyCrick91 wrote:Why would YOU get banned?

That's why, I can't get on GAC Forums anymore.

Ahh damnit, this is what I get for not choosing to extend to January. I miss a SOTS class!Disney Princess Ariellen wrote:It does sound like Disney is serious about wanting to be releasing this movie, which I have been able to see since I came down here, so we'll just have to wait and see. It's 59th anniversary is next month, and to celebrate, Jim will be presenting a "Creation of Splash Mountain" class for cast through Disney Learning Center. (The Learning Center people said that Song of the South was too contraversial to be allowed as a topic for a presentation, but the characters and stories that went into making Splash Mountain and how they were used for a 3D attraction was perfectly OK. Obviously, some people don't seem to have a clue what the ride is based on.)
And YOU got to SEE SOTS? (not that I'm complaining since I have a ripped-from-laserdisc DVD) Was it something rentable at one of the Learning Centers??? This is what I get for paying attention to the job and not to the other stuff I could've done while down there.

I hope that it does get a re-release, although I think some historical placement would be very welcome. Don't forget that the film's star James Basket was the first black actor to be awarded with the an Oscar. The animated segments in Song of the South are my favourite from all Disney movies and I don't think that its reputation as a classic will die down when the film finally comes out on DVD.

No, it's just as unavailable in the Learning Center as it is anywhere else. I've made some fellow Disney-crazy friends down here, and I borrowed a video from one of my friends.Escapay wrote: And YOU got to SEE SOTS? It was great fun; when some other of my friends found out, they said "WE WANT TO SEE IT TOO!" so we had a "wild" party...drinking soda, eating pizza, and watching Song of the South. We felt like such rebels.

Very cute movie; the animated sequences are better than the live action, but James Baskett was wonderful and Bobby Driscoll, the little boy who played Toby (I forget the actor's name...), and Luana Patten were adorable. I think that it would still be nice for someone to put the film in its historical context (both "this is when it's set and this is what the US was like then" and "this was also made in the '40s," but I didn't find anything in this film to warrent the uproar. My friends and I are pretty sure that it's set AFTER the Civil War, there's no evidence of any of the African American characters being mistreated, and Uncle Remus is easily the smartest character in the whole movie.
Oh, and Brer Bear is hysterical.

Aww, that sounds like fun! A bunch of us ODF'ers would infrequently have a movie night, but we never went about planning around a movie (though one time they all got together one Saturday to watch the entire miniseries "The Tenth Kingdom", and unfortunately I couldn't get off to join them.)Disney Princess Ariellen wrote:No, it's just as unavailable in the Learning Center as it is anywhere else. It was awesome. Actually, it seems like we're going to be having ANOTHER Song of the South party in Chatham; another friend has confessed to not having seen it, and I still have the borrowed copy with me. I think this will be sometime later in the week.Escapay wrote: Aww, that sounds like fun! SOTS; what is the latest?
That is pretty funny that this movie cannot even be discussed in the Disney Learning Center! Geez, it is part of Disney history (but I suppose they would have to worry about someone filing lawsuit about racism in the workplace?)
Tonight, my sister lent me a DVD copy of SOTS that she bought off Ebay from a guy in England who made her a copy of this. She has collected alot of memorabilia about the film off Ebay. Turns out it is her husband's all-time favorite movie, go figure!
My question is, since she got a copy from some guy in England, has this been released to other countries? Why would a guy in England have a copy that he put on DVD? Not sure if it came from a VHS copy or what? Someone here had posted about regionless DVDs or being able to obtain OOP Disney titles in Asian video stores that have been transfered from PAL to Region 1 version? so is it possible to go to say an Asian area here in LA County go to Asian store and find this on a DVD that I could play on my DVD player?
Is there any update on when it will be released? Who is it that we need to bug about releasing this movie?

^ Prime example of a pirated dvd, but since that's the only way to get it over here in the US, its a market to be filled.
SOTS has been released in Europe, so yes, it has been released in other countries, but not the US because a lot of people follow "political correctness" and this film could spark debate among those that think its racist and inaccurate. I think its inaccurate, but I fail to see any racial overtones.
If a dvd is region free, that means it could play on any dvd player. I think most of the bootleg copies that are sold to US consumers are region 1.
