Top 9 Musicals
Top 9 Musicals
In the vein of Wonderlicious' favorite comedies thread, I bring you the thread for favorite musicals! Why 9? Dunno, but since this is a direct sequel to the comedy thread, 9's the magic number. You can choose whether or not to include animation. I'm not because otherwise it'll heavily (and I mean heavily) dominate my list.

2. Chicago
3. Singin' in the Rain
4. Jesus Christ Superstar
5. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
6. Mary Poppins

6. Mary Poppins
7. Grease

I'm a humongous Rodgers and Hammerstein fan so those musicals will populate most of my list I think... let me start listing and we'll see what I end up with. No order to mine of course.
The King and I (we did this in high school, I absolutely love the music)
South Pacific (watched this one while I was in labor with Aiden!!)
Mary Poppins
The Sound of Music
Grease
Showboat
Miss Saigon
Carousel
Wizard of Oz
Singin' in the Rain
and a musical that was written solely for the big screen
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Ok, my list was 9 +2. Woops!

I don't like most film musicals, because they tend to be unbearably slow and show-off-ish, but there are a few that I really like. I won't rank them, because I find it very difficult to do in this particular genre.
Objectively, I'd have to say Chicago is probably the greatest movie musical ever done - its highly original and inventive, and manages to buck nearly every weakness that tends to rear its head in other musicals.
My personal favorites are most definately West Side Story, Mary Poppins and The Phantom of the Opera. I also like Singin' in the Rain.

Is this film musicals people? I can't tell from some of these lists. Oh, well...
I really can't rank my favorites, because I don't think you can be very objective when comparing the musicals of Hollywood old and those of today.
West Side Story
The King and I
Dancer In The Dark
Moulin Rouge!
Singin' in the Rain
The Wizard of Oz
The Sound of Music
Cabaret
Amadeus
I am so glad Avenue Q trumped Wicked at last year's Tony Awards. The music is way too broad and the lyrics too family friendly to be taken seriously. It's a satisfactory adaptation of a really good novel. Avenue Q challenges the audience, something that hardely ever happens on Broadway anymore.
To say Chicago is the best made musical is somewhat laughable, especially when there are some in recent years which blow it's direction and production values out of the water. It was a good film, but significantly flawed. I was a bit puzzled by the casting. The Phantom of the Opera turned out to be a trainwreck, just like I expected.

Sounds like an argument people might use about Disney, I'd say.Prince Eric wrote:... way too broad and the lyrics too family friendly to be taken seriously.
