Question About Video Restoration

Post by rodis »

Something I've been wondering for a long time now...

Why is it, that everytime a film is re-released, and naturally goes through some video restoration, the reviews state "...the film now looks as glorious as it first did when it premiered in theatres". Something along the lines of "this is how it looked when it was first released".

But it obviously went through some color changes, drastic ones actually, from the version we have in the first VHS release: Pink can turn purple, blue can suddenly look greener, etc.

Anyone who understands in this stuff?

I'm no expert on video restorations, but I can say this: when they say it looks like how it was originally released, they usually mean it. See, movie prints, of course, age over time. As time goes by, print flaws become more evident, colors start to go bizarre (whites turn into yellows, etc.), and detereoration occurs. With the latest video restorations, what you're seeing closely resembles what an audience saw back at the movie's premiere, many times even better. If we didn't have the type of digital technology we had today, movies we currently see in theaters (which look quite good) would look very poor 20-30 years from now. If you were to travel back in time to, say, 1939, the prints of The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind you see in theaters would have much more common with these latest restorations than with a video master from the 80's or even 90's. If a color on a DVD looks different than how you saw it on TV or on VHS a few years ago, chances are that that was the color of the original object when shot (or the actual cel animation, fi you're talking about animation). A good example of this is the Snow White DVD. If you take a look at the vintage footage of artists going through each cel, you can see that colors on each cel look just like the DVD's image as opposed to the VHS's image from 1994.

disclaimer: this post is NOT a response to Disneykid's post which is very well made and I agree with in many points.

This is in response to reviewrs statements for every restoration again and again.

So is the top one the original print and the bottom is the DVD? Or do I have it reversed?

I'm sure you know that movies (in theatres) are made from many photos sticked togheter......so they are less propense to deterioration, when the people of disney make the dvds, they take the movie from the original theatre movie and add some color filters just to make the movie look great!
Can't Wait to buy Peter Pan!!!!
