What's so cool about 101 Dalmatians?

Post by Evil Genie Jafar »

If you could please tell me.

I'd really like to know why this movie is so popular because I don't find why it is so special and why it deserves to be Platinum.

Well 101 Dalmatians does have the meanest villain of all Cruella De Vil. When I say meanest I mean from Disney History. Who doesn't like dogs especially Dalmatians?
That's why but it's my opinion... :D Also the film has action from the beginning of the film to the end so maybe that’s why people enjoyed it so much.

it has all the disney magic required to make a trully classic, very rare to find these days...

and visually (cause I work with visuals) I can tell you this movie is fantastic, it has the retro-longe look that is so "in" right now, but beside that, it is pure art, I´ve always said that if Sleeping Beuaty is a moving painting, a pice of classic art, 101 Dalmatians is the equivalent in modern art. You can tell that for only looking at the character design and those wonderful "not so perfect" backgrounds

Disney thinks 101 dalmatians deserves platinum because it has made them enough profit throughout the years. (this "platinum" Line is based on home video sales)

i like the movie, and i get your dirt, but i would like a 2 disc regardless :)

i think the live action remake is overrated. dalmatians arent THAT cute. I dont get it either. but the animated film does have charm.

Adjusted for inflation, 101 Dalmatians made an estimated $681,250,000, making it the eleventh highest grossing film of all time. It also made big bucks on home video, that is the reason why it's in the platinum line up I think. Plus, this movie has been wildly popular ever since the live-action remake made big bucks at the Box Offic as well. So it's a fact: 101 Dalmatians = $$$$

Actually, it was a big deal way before the live-action version was released.
And most people DO know about "Disney's film with the dalmatians" thanks to the animated movie.

of course, that is why it made a lot of money in te first place. But does anyone recall the dalmatian hype back in 1996? everyone wanted dalmatians, not knowing these dogs are actually pretty stupid and they don't listen to their owners. So the next thing happening was people returning the dogs. And since they had no place for so many they had to be killed off. Yeah, I definitely recall the hype was huge similair to people wanting clownfish back in 2003 due to Nemo. My mom got a dalmatian car back then... with disney puppies all over it..... it's.... hideous

Well, maybe because seeing real people with real dalmatians makes you want these dogs more than when you see them in an animated movie.
However, most people I know think the live-action version was totally unnecessary. And I have to agree with them. And I saw it in the theater, what a waste of money!

LOL @ them being stupid.

well yeah... I never said the live action version was good. In fact I think it's a poor excuse for a remake. I can't believe that movie was a hit back in 1996. And yeah, those dogs appear to be really stupid

But to go back to the origin of the thread: 101 Dalmatians, the animated version that is, is an classic in every sense of the word. Wonderfully designed and animated. And a great, but simple story. I can see how some would prefer a movie like Peter Pan, Pinocchio or Alice in Wonderland to be in the platinum line instead of 101 Dalmatians. But I think it's definitely worth to be a platinum edition... in fact I want them to hurry up, I want that dvd.. I missed out on the limited issue :(

I haven't seen it in years, but I remember it having a very good feeling in it with London and everything. I was a little bit surprised though that it's going to be released as a Platinum Edition, but I don't really care that much because I found it good.

This is a little bit off-topic, but I want to ask it anyway: Will there be more Platinum Edition's after the one which is already confirmed for 2007? There's so many other Disney movies I'd like to see as PE:s.

EXCUSE ME!!!! (JOKE LOL :D) This move has a great cast, beautiful artwork, it did fantastic in theaters, and even went on to produce 2 live action movies (with an all star cast), and an additional animated sequel. Not only are the charters wonderful, but the story has a great meaning. And of course there is the #1 reason: Cruella De Vil. Apparently Disney thinks this movie is one of the best ever. If they didn’t then why would they produce live action movies, an animated sequel, 2 video releases, and tons of publicity? (Not many of the classics were released again in the masterpiece collection, or on DVD. Also not many classics get 2 live action movies. For example Aladdin got none of these things) That is why 101 Dalmatians is the best!!!!!!!!!! :!: :!:

Augh. Stupid people.

And I agree that the live-action 101 Dalmatians is overrated. Gimme 101 Min Pins any day of the week. ;)

I hate to be saying this but I actually kinda liked the tv series the Saturday Disney show on Channel 7 in Australia used to show, the animation for it looked kinda funny with it being slightly super deformed.

As mentioned many times above, this film has a classic villian. I love how unique and over-the-top they made her.

And I hate to say it, but how much more politaly correct could Cruella get? In a "bad guy" sort of way, I mean. She wants to kill off the innocent little puppies to make a fur coat? Anyone remember the lash-out toward fur in the eighties? And she always has a lit cigarette, and you know that makes her evil. . . LOL!

But on a more serious note, the xerography used in the film required them to stylize the art, and it turned out beautifully. There are some wonderful moments with the acting that really surprised me when I saw the film for the first time in high school (I was too young to remember much about my previous viewing). The story is also very sentimental and satisfying without ever becoming sappy.

Personally, I can't wait for the platinum edition.

Personally, I think that 101 Dalmatians should be a platinum, despite it not really being one of my all time favourites. Let's face it, there's little difference between Platinum 2 Disc Sets and normal 2 Disc Special Editions. Look at Snow White: PE and compare it to say, Alice in Wonderland: ME. Both contain a very good helping of bonus features and a new digital transfer, not much difference there. And with my belief that every Disney animated film (not including sequels but including live action combos) should get a 2 Disc Set to please its fans, I think that even if it weren't a future PE, it would deserve a Special Edition at least.

The platinum line is essentially Disney's best sellers on video and although the word "platinum" could imply greatest, it's not implying greatness, so don't say "how dare Disney call this great?".

oh my... 101 Dalmatians what can I say? It is one of my all time favs... especially when I was a kid. Cruella De Vil is off the hook! She is definately one of my fav villains. Usually the villains are my favorite characters in movies

I love Cruella De Vil so much that I bought the doll of her at disney land last summer, the disney villains doll collection. I wish I would have bought more :o( she is the only one I have so far. I hope the collection is still available at disney land...
