The Incredibles - DVD Cover/Disc Art and Bonus Features

Post by Luke »

As the current Incredibles thread started with the first word of the DVD, from BonusMage's R2 insert. I figure today's newest development was worth giving its own thread to discuss cover/disc artwork (always a hot topic) and news of bonus features that are trickling in before the press release comes.

In case you missed the front page, here are thumbnails of the preliminary cover/disc art. Click on the pictures or visit <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/coverart. ... ">Upcoming DVD Art</a> for a larger view.

<p align="center"><a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/coverart. ... ncdvdt.jpg[/img]</a> <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/coverart. ... disc1t.jpg[/img]</a> <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/coverart. ... disc2t.jpg[/img]</a></p>

<b><i>The Incredibles</i>: 2-Disc Collector's Edition</b> is now up for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... >pre-order at Amazon.com</a> (40% off).

2099net has filled us in with the latest extras passed by the BBFC as well as other R2 news:

<i>The Incredibles</i> is due on March 15th in the US as a 2-Disc Collector's Edition in separate widescreen or fullscreen versions with a $29.99 SRP. Thus far, the highlights are the all-new short "Jack Jack Attack", the 27-minute "Making of <i>The Incredibles</i>" featurette, (a good length for a general documentary on a film, hopefully this will be on par with "The Story Behind <i>Toy Story</i>"), a great number of deleted scenes including a lengthy alternate opening, and the accompanying theatrical short "Boundin.'"

Highlights from Disney:
Disney wrote:<b>Synopsis:</b> From the Academy Award(R) winning creators of FINDING NEMO (2003 Best Animated Feature Film) comes the action-packed animated adventure about the mundane and incredible lives of a house full of superheroes. Bob Parr and his wife Helen used to be among the world's greatest crime fighters, saving lives and battling evil on a daily basis. Fifteen years later, they have been forced to adopt civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs where they live "normal" lives with their three kids, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack. Itching to get back into action, Bob gets his chance when a mysterious communication summons him to a remote island for a top secret assignment. But he soon discovers that it will take a super family effort to rescue the world from total destruction. Exploding with fun and featuring an all-new animated short film, this spectacular 2-disc collector's edition DVD is high-flying entertainment for everyone. "It's James Bond, Indiana Jones, and the X-Men all rolled into one." -- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Very neat cover art, though I wish they'd put Syndrome in there somewhere. I'm hoping this set is better than Nemo's, which was solid, but left a little to be desired after the excellent ABL:CE.

It's a little boring the way they crammed the whole family on the cover and then stuck two stock pictures below it. It could be the cover for almost any show, as the whole family (except for Dash) has a little smirk. Comedy? Yes. But we get no sense that it's an action film except for Frozone at the bottom, who just seems like a random inclusion. I would have much prefered a cover with the family springing out...giving a sense of excitement instead of placidness.

There were a lot of posts to this thread that were lost. Google's cache has a bunch which I'll repost here:

<hr><b>saving107</b> wrote:
this is probably the least important thing ever, but i really like Slipcovers and i hope this DVD has them. they are becoming more common to have slipcovers, thats why i am hoping it will have it.

besides Extra features and all, i know slipcovers is that last important thing, but i like them.

<hr><b>Grandmaster C</b> wrote:
I usually don't like floating heads myself, but for some reason it works for this movie.

I love it! :D

<hr><b>Disneykid</b> wrote:
I quite like the cover, though I agree that Frozone and Edna look rather slapped on at the bottom. I wonder what those untitled bonus features the BBFC passed are (perhaps easter eggs?). Now that we know this isn't a Nemo/Brother Bear style of 2-disc, I'll be expecting more features to be passed.

<hr><b>nachonaco</b> wrote:

I would rather not post my resources, but the 'extra' short relates to Jack-Jack. This has been confirmed.

As I said before, I would not like to reveal my source.

I merged this with the existing thread. We do already know or at least suspect that Jack Jack will feature prominently in the short "Jack Jack Attack"! :up

I read a story in WIRED magazine a few months ago where Brad Bird said that he took a video camera into Pixar on his first day there, basically because he couldn't believe that all the great things he heard about the studio were true. He said that some of this footage would be included on the Incredibles DVD, so hopefully we'll see that as well (perhaps it's one of the untitled entries above).

<hr><b>nachonaco</b> wrote:

I have no idea if this has been stated before, forgive me if it has.

As far as I know, there are no outtakes in the movie because of the stylized credits.

EDIT: Just read the list. There may be out takes, but they will not be part of the actual movie itself.

<hr><b>Ciaobelli</b> wrote:

Every studio should just pay Criterion to design their covers IMO, imagine that.

Happy to see a Making of and Boundin' which, unlike many, I greatly enjoyed. Can't wait to see the new short.

<hr><b>PixarFan</b> wrote:

A separate widescreen and fullscreen release!? This is just what I wanted! More bonus features that way! Haven't checked for a while, but does Wal-Mart offer widescreen DVDs yet, or will I have to purchase this elsewhere?

As for the cover, I like the heads sticking out of the logo, but I'd prefer it with a more jazzy look, and either make E and Frozone fit into the cover or remove them. Right now they make the cover feel cheep and plain. It looks only slightly better than my feeble attempts at making a DVD cover (which, upon completion, I promptly deleted). A movie like this deserves a better cover. Still, I will gladly get this set no matter how it looks on the outside. I can't wait for March!

<hr><b>saving107</b> wrote:

yes Walmart does carry widescreen DVD's now, i bought Shrek 2, Harry Potter 3, Spider-Man 2 and Dodgeball all widescreen at walmart.

<hr><b>Luke</b> wrote:

Some Wal-Marts do, some don't. It all depends on your local Wal-Mart. It's not like there will be any shortage of places selling this DVD at a good price.

true, for Spider-Man 2 the competition was Best Buy $14.99 and Wal-Mart for $14.87, and for $.12 never mattered that much, i just buy most of my DVD's there because walmart is Closer than other stores.

Hn... the coverart's all right, but I agree that Edna and Frozone look like just an afterthought.

I think it'd look better without those two characters' images slapped on the bottom.
Wherever. Whatever. Have a nice day.

I think you should register your dvd and contact Disney in order to get a slipcover, but I'm not sure. I believe that after a while slipcovers are no longer produced. My Alice:ME didnt come with a slipcover when i ordered it recently.

Anyway, I like the cover, especially if it's shiny and holographic. Looks like a promising release.

Hopefully the trailers, TV spots and Internet-only ads (including everything here: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/intheaters.html#inc ), character interviews, and commentary are all among the stuff still to be passed.

I fell as well that I should point out that the UK BBFC listings can only be taken as a guide for the eventual contents of the Incredibles set. As we have seen in the past, it is possible for stuff to be passed, but absent from the final release.

The ultimate confirmation (bar actually holding the finished set in one's hands) will be the Press Release.

Now that's what I'm talking about! This release seems to be on par with Monsters, Inc.'s excellent set, and I can only assume the lists of characters are galleries and 3-D turnarounds. I'm glad to see Disney has learned from past mistakes and has been releasing consistantly great 2-disc sets in the past few months and in the months ahead.
