What are your favorite movies pre-1975?

Post by DDMAN26 »

Why 1975? Well I think because the modern movie era began in 1975 with the release of Jaws. So I want to focus on movies made before that. My top twenty films made before 1975:

1. Lawrence of Arabia
2. The Godfather
3. Cool Hand Luke
4. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
5. Bridge on the River Kwai
6. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
7. Pinocchio
8. Singing in the Rain
9. Mary Poppins
10. The Godfather Part II
11. The Day the Earth Stood Still
12. Fantasia
13. West Side Story
14. Bride of Frankenstein
15. Citizen Kane
16. Rear Window
17. Patton
18. Vertigo
19. Ben-Hur
20. The Wizard of Oz
Most Anticpated: Watchmen Terminator Salvation Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

9. Mary Poppins
12. Fantasia
16. Rear Window
19. Ben-Hur
20. The Wizard of Oz

Out of your twenty, those are probably the only 5 I'd ever rank as favorite.

Anyways, my favorite pre-1975 movies are: (including the five above, and they're not in any order except for Casablanca and Gone With The Wind)

1. Casablanca
2. Gone With the Wind
3. Roman Holiday
4. Sabrina
5. Breakfast at Tiffany's
6. Charade
7. The Ten Commandments (both versions)
8. To Kill A Mockingbird
9. The Man Who Knew Too Much (the remake)
10. The Birds
11. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
12. Yours, Mine, And Ours
13. It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
14. Planet of the Apes
15. Escapay from Planet of the Apes...uh, I mean ESCAPE from Planet of the Apes

The original 1925 (?) Phantom of the Opera is still a classic, and superbly watchable today. As are Universal's later horror films Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy and The Invisible Man. Sadly, Dracula has not aged well at all.

I also enjoy Its a Wonderful Life, and the original The Haunting, which still has one of the best motion picture soundtracks ever, despite being in mono.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

1. Alice in Wonderland
2. The Wizard of Oz
3. Sleeping Beauty
4. Cinderella
5. Singin' in the Rain
6. Jesus Christ Superstar
7. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
8. Mary Poppins
9. Pinocchio
10.. Peter Pan
11. Ben-Hur
12. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
13. Casablanca
14. Lady and the Tramp
15. Miracle on 34th Street
16. It's A Wonderful Life
17. The Godfather
18. King of Kings (remake, though I like the original enough to place it here, too)
19. Fantasia
20. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

It's amazing how heavily Disney dominates this list, though not surprising. Making a pre-1975 top 20 without Disney would be hard (though it could be done, but I'm just too lazy to try it).
