The problem is that the people making the decisions at Disney are not artists, but business people who only look at the bottom line. They see CG movies raking in the big bucks and traditional animation bombing at the box office and draw the business conclusion that 2-D animation is dead. (of course they also said that about pirate movies right before Pirates of the Carribean opened so we can tell their radar is not exactly a fine tuned instrument)
The problem Disney is facing is that these non-artist business types are calling all the important shots on the CREATIVE end of Disney animation. Then they can't see that it was their decisions that caused the movie to perform poorly, and so blame it on the medium of animation. No change in the quality will happen until they put ARTISTS back in charge of making the films. Does that mean every film made by artists will be a great movie? No! Even artists misfire sometimes. We can all name great filmmakers who have come out with some real stinkbombs. However I cannot think of one great film that was made entirely by a "business" minded group.

Could there be a 2D film in the works at Disney?

I guess I see cgi as more of a special effect than "art", I wonder how many of these people that make cgi cartoons could do hand drawn animation well enough to use in a film???. Some cgi films look so stail, very generic looking to me. there are exceptions like pixar which films have lots of eye candy and great fresh storys.
I find that overall imo I like cgi when it is used (as a tool) to improve and high light traditional animation because to me hand draw images are more ??? special/personable ??? (can't think of a better word right now) because it is a skill that not just anyone can can do and do WELL.
I will keep my fingers crossed that Disney will do more hand animated films with hopfully FRESH NEW inventive storys which is even more important.

				orestes.
I prefer traditional animation. It's much more beautiful.
Anyways cel animation seems dead for now and could be dead for a very long time for Disney (well as features and not sequels). If 2D becomes more popular again I would think it would not be tradtional cel animation but 2d digital animation.
I'm so tired of this topic but I thought I would have a little tiny bit to say since I have never talked aobut it on this site. I can't get over that they are mostly into their full 3d digital features.
I can't wait to see more Studio Ghibli/ Miyazaki films and Rapunzel Unbraided for a breath of fresh air.
