iPods

Post by Mushu2083 »

My dad has promised me either an iPod OR a portable DVD player for Christmas (why must he make me choose?! I want both!) I kinda want the ipod more than the portable DVD player (even though I've been wanting one for about a year or so) but do I need to get any extra accessories with the iPod? Do I need stuff for my laptop to be able to download music to an iPod? :?

Ok. I thought I was going to need hardware that was going to cost me extra money. What color should I get. Too bad they don't have a purple one.

You might wanna try asking/contacting awallaceunc, he's our resident iPod expert i think ;) He posted once about the iTunes iPod way of life so if you do a search of those terms with him as author you'd probably find it (i'm busy admiring Tresasure :P)

iPods have a lot of gadgety accesories and casses, etc you might wanna try exploring some on Apple.com or going to Borders or whatever and looking into the backs of the Mac magazines, they are full of ads for accesoring iPods etc.

Also remember the iPods are HardDrives so they can save data other than music. Since i don't have one ive never explored this but youd probably maybe could (eventually?) save Quicktime movies on it (or other 'stuff'
'_' and watch them when you conected the iPod to a puter or something... among other uses

I have had my iPod since Spring 2003 and I love it. Things I reccommend you do if you buy one, don't go for the Mini. It's 250 bucks and you can only store 1000 songs on it. For 50 bucks more you can get the white iPod and it's 20 gigs I believe and can hold 2500. And I would keep the plastic on it, because my got scratched up pretty easily. But don't get me wrong, it is a great way to spend 300 dollars if you have it :) I could because of my wonderful tax return....WOOHOO

I don't know what kind of ports your computer uses, but iPods come ready-made for use with both Firewire (I think PC calls Firewire I-Link or something like that?) and USB. I believe at one time you needed an adapater cable that was not included for it to work with USB. However, I don't think this is still the case, but I'm not entirely sure. At any rate, if you do need such a cable, it can be gotten from Apple for a fairly inexpensive price, and the folks at Apple or the Apple Store can answer any and all questions regarding that.

There are all kinds of iPod accessories that you might want, but other than that, none that you need. :)

I don't know if this is nationwide or just local, but Target and Sam's Clubs currently offer very good deals on the iPods, specifically the older models, which I prefer anyways. Might want to pass the word on to your dad. :)

Btw, here is a link to that thread that deathi referenced: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... 4&start=20

Aaron my puter is so ancient that it don't have Firewire nor USB :P
(It has SCSI, Ethernet, adb, modem/printer serials, microphone, headphone, Stereo RCA phono in/outs, Component, Composite, S-Video in/outs tho)

I just read in one Mac site that future iPods are rumored to get satellite radio capacity too :P

Btw iLink is the name Sony (and i think Pioneer and Denon in their multichannel DVD-A/SACD receivers?) give to FireWire. In the PC world it is called some PC appropiate name, like IEEE 3994 or something..

Deathie -- might you be referring to the IEEE-1394 :)

Anyways, i'd definately get the iPod if you're basically remotely interested in music. Why? you can take it almost anywhere that you want, it's stylish, and it gets the job done.

A user above posted a link to the Jukebox, which is not a bad deal in itself, but I personally have found problems with the NOMAD in that the front pops up very easily and that it is quite dificult making it moderately hard to control with a single hand. However, the price is much better. For the iPod, you're basically paying for the name APPLE. The 40gig Nomad is generally cheaper than the 20gig iPod. However, you're paying for name and sometimes quality.

As for accessories, it depends. If you wanna listen to the iPod in the car, I'd reccomend either the iTrip or a cassette adapter. The iTrip is pricier and has it's flaws in heavily populated cities, however, it seems very cool. Some cassette adapters are flawed, so you'd have to do your research before getting one.

Another accessory is a cover case for your iPod. Some say the back scratches easily. As long as you take good care of it, you'll generally be in shape. The case, however, is a very stylish looking thing if you find one that pleases your needs.

Other than that, you should be fine. Any other questions?

Also, which iPod is right for you?

4gb - appx. 1000 songs
20gb - appx. 5000 songs
40gb - appx. 10000 songs

so it's all on how much music you think you have (including CD's and what's on your computer)

the Ipod + HP is the 299.99 and only works with windows based PC. (windows XP and another windows i cant remember.) only comes in 20GB

Ipod PC + MAC is 299.99 for the 20GB and 399.99 for the 40GB you can use this with Windows or Mac OS (Win XP)

Ipod Minis are 249.99 only come in a 4GB like someone mentiong is a total ripoff for 50 buck you can get 16 more GB!

MMB -- with the mini, you're paying for the outside color and sleekness. I know many people who have like 5 CD's, and that's it. For them, a 4gig would work. I know that for 50 bucks more, they'd be set for life, but many of the children who buy iPods, save the money themselves, and cannot wait to save 50 more bucks for something that a) is more expensive and b) just white, as opposed to green.

On apples move, this is very smart because many people care how their iPods look.

personally, i love how my 20 gig looks, and my mom paid for most of it, so i can't complain!

You forgot to mention that the iPod mini is also smaller. The small size is nice - especially if you use when jogging or anything like that.

My local Apple reseller currently has the iPod mini on sale for $240 and I was looking at them yesterday. The iPod mini's come with cables for connecting to both USB and Firewire, a belt clip, and of course the earbud headphones. I have around 100 CDs, but 4GB is still big enough to hold my whole music library.

The iPods do scratch very easily. My screen got pretty scratched very shortly after I got it, and the back to an extent. I mourned it briefly but you soon forget it's even there (except when there's a really bright glare). The cases can get in the way a lot and get dirty themselves and still don't protect the entire Pod.

I have both a cassette adapter and an iTrip. The cassette adapater is one that I picked up for like $10 or $15 at Best Buy or Wal-Mart or somewhere like that and I'm very satisfied with it. Occasionally there is a quality/volume problem, but only on soft recordings that don't pack much high quality/high volume to begin with and the problems just magnify in the car. Again, this is a rarity. My iTrip was given to me by a friend and I can't get it to work AT ALL. Not even a bit. I've tried it mostly in big cities, but occasionally in more rural areas and still no success. It could just be that it is defective, though.

you should buy the FM transmiter for the Ipod! streams thru a set FM station instead of a cassette adapter! The regular Ipod have printable tattoos to put on Thanks to HP! this fit the Apple and HP Ipods. I think some retailers sell a screen protector and also rubber protector for the Ipod itself incase you drop it! they come in pink, blue and green!

for Ipod Mini there's a hard case arm band to keep it protected if you exercise!
