leonard maltin/treasures

Post by blacksanta »

Hi you guys,
I've been a lurker here since I started collecting the treasures. This will probably be a one-time post since those are the only Disney DVDs I collect. Thanks Luke, for the great resource that is this site. The following is a reply sent back to me from Leonard Maltin when I inquired into future treasures (specifically SS2 and 'assorted'). It could be his assistants responding, but what the hey....
Thanks again for the site Luke,
blacksanta

Hi...

Thanks for your letter and your very kind words... We are definitely planning a Treasures volume to include all the "miscellaneous" cartoons, and will almost certainly get to the remaining Silly Symphonies as well. No commitments right now, but things are looking very good indeed. And if sales continue to hold up for the three new Treasures being released ext week--Mickey Mouse in B&W Vol 2, Pluto Vol. 1, and The Mickey Mouse Club, I will happily continue to mine the Disney vaults for many years to come.

cheers,

Leonard Maltin

Thanks for the kind word, and thanks for sharing the response from Leonard!

From his enthusiasm it sounds like the content will remain top notch, lets hope te treasures last long enough to get all shorts ever created by Disney.

The Treasures that sells the fastest are the shorts so I have no doubt that they will continue making them.

The treasures has proven to be one of the most done deals for Disney so why stop.

Just to make sure they sell, we could buy extras copies for Christmas gifts. Come on people, you know someone who'd be happy to get a Disney Treasure for Christmas.

I'm pretty sure that Wave 4 will sell out. But maybe it will sell out and Disney will think, "Well, we better not make any more of the Treasures series because this last wave only sold out once, not twice."

A question: can you still find the DVDs from wave 3 in stores? Considering three of them are still available on Amazon.com, I begin to wonder how limited these DVDs really are.

Joe, tho I haven' been looking, I think it's been a while since i have seen a tin on a local store. Just 6 months after...

Before wave 3 came out i used to see some of wave 2 or 1 sporadically (and those were always the crockett, behind the scenes , or disneyland-usa ones :P)

mmm people complained so much about pluto being split on 2 volumes and now we're getting very little pluto. Just in case on tuesday i'll be ready to sprint like a race dog to make sure I get it. (the others too :P)

It is not inconceivable that Wave 3 is still available - don't forget, they only came out 6-7 months ago (as opposed to usual gap of a year), and the production numbers were much higher on Wave 3 (175,000 on MM, 165,000 on Donald, 250,000 on the Frontlines, but only 105,000 on Tomorrowland).

Compare here:

As you will find Waves 1 and 2 harder to ger, I think you will find they are indeed limited.

On an unrelated note, my Treasures are in "Packaging" at DVDSoon. Yay!

I'm officially asking that you not buy unnecessary extra copies of the Treasures! Some people can't go out to buy them until after Christmas, and you guys are really going to make supply an issue

I know that the bigger production numbers has something to do with the sets still being available, but considering that the demand has been higher and higher for this set I though they all would be unavailable by now. Besides, since the tins are not individually numbered anymore, Disney could prouce more copies than announced and no one would notice.

As I said, it isn't JUST the higher numbers, but the fact that it wasn't that long ago. Limited or not, these only really appeal to a niche market, and 6 months isn't that long a time for 250,000 to completely sell out (we are talking about 60 year old cartoons here - ones that talk about the importance of grain).

I take your point, and there has been a higher demand, but that is probably why they increased the number of tins. They could very well release more onto the market without us knowing, but why bother?

Perhaps interest has actually declined? it could be a million different reasons. Nothing is certain in the entertainment world. A sure-thing blockbuster could flop, and the Treasures may cease to interest people. Personally, I have no interest in the Mickey Mouse Club one, but will get it to complete my set. Imagine how little interest the general public will have in Tomorrowland and Mickey Mouse Club!

After all, when I bought Davy Crockett and Behind the Scenes, it was just before the original (December) release date of Wave 3, and both were available in the shops.

There's actually some decent stuff on the Mickey Mouse Club set. Man, that Cubby O'Brien was a great drummer.

Maybe the dimished interest is cus this wave is 2/3rds B & W, plus people saw that the color one was split in two ("Two volumes of Pluto shorts?? I can't take that much dog!! I'll pass" :P) Maybe the Three Musketerers earlier this year plus Mickey Twice upon a Chritmas plus Aladdin, Mulan, Mary Poppins! was too much of an overload.. plus the 4 excellent treasures released just 6 months earlier, who knows... Maybe them being 3 instead of 4, maybe if they had a Technicolor Chrono Donald 2 to pull the weight, as i sugested but did they listen to me? noooooooo . :P

;)

Anyway come tuesday rrrr I'll get my Treasure yo ho ho.

Are we sure that there's diminished interest? I do kind of wonder how they decide how many of each title to produce.
