Mickey and the Beanstalk Ludwig version coming to DVD?

Post by ichabod »

DVDsoon are advertising this DVD for release next year, Could it be the Ludwig Von Drake version? Let's hope so after all it would be stupid to release the Edgar Bergen version again! Although it does have a running time of 78 minutes!?

I think the Ludwig Von Drake version has been released a couple of times and I've seen it mentioned here. Here's one posted by mvealf:

There might be other mentions but at this moment i can't recall where.

I assume this will be the Ludwig Von Drake version since it's aimed at children and Disney seems to believe that kids prefer to watch their cartoons edited and hacked up. Plus I'm sure the character would be more appeasing to the youngins' than a dated Edgar Bergen.

Does anybody know the age of the added Von Drake part ? And I would like to know who did the voice for him. Paul Frees or Corey Burton.

It was made in 1963, so I would expect it to be Paul Frees.

I'm pretty sure it's Paul Frees as well.

I really hope that they do release the Von Drake version on DVD sometime. I just rented the Fun And Fancy Free version of Mickey And The Beanstalk and couldn't watch it. It's obvious to me that that is the original version, and I usually prefer the original version, but the people narrating the story express no emotion at all while reading it. If that was my father reading me a bedtime story when I was a kid, I probably just would have said "Never mind. I'll just go to sleep" or "I'll just read it myself." :D When Von Drake reads it, his words flow with the music and make the story so much more enjoyable to me.

Holy old threads Batman!

I remember when I first got the Fun and Fancy Free DVD and saw that version. I thought it was pretty freaky since I necer saw that version before, only the Von Drake version! It would be nice to have both...would have been a good extra for the DVD.

I have a feeling that this has been asked before, but why was the Ludwig Von Drake version made? To show on TV? Why? Were TV airings not in Mr. Bergen's contract?

"Mickey and the Beanstalk" narrated by Paul Frees as Ludwig VonDrake (and co-hosted by Herman the Bug) is from the 1963 "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" episode, "The Truth About Mother Goose" - - the two featurettes were paired for the hour show along with new bridging animation. (This is the best version for me). (VonDrake was the regular cartoon host of World of Color for those too young to recall - - there are 18 or so original VonDrake episodes, all great, made between 1961 and 1967).

There is another, earlier recut as well from the "Disneyland" series, narrated by Sterling Holloway, from the episode "The Adventures of Mickey Mouse" (later resued in a WWoD hour called "Mickey's Greatest Adventures" - - and on "The New Mickey Mouse Club") - - but that one lacks an ending, as there is no new animation to take the place of Bergen and Patten.

That's really cool- thanks, merlinjones!!!

Disney should make a Ludwig Von Drake Treasures set, and that would probably be on it, if they did make one, right?

>>Disney should make a Ludwig Von Drake Treasures set<<

Definitely - - or even a bigger boxed set of all the Ludwig Wonderful World of Color episodes.

A hint for oversea-collectors :)

On the following German release there ist the van Drake version of the beanstalk story in full length - and with the right click in the right menu you can hear the original US-voices:
