Do you read the Bible?

Yuck....I hate theological debates........
But I do love a good chance to post!

I hope nobody left this forum feeling angry at each other!
That's definately something the bible speaks against!

Yes, I just started reading the bible. Try to read a little every sunday since I don't usually go to church. Trying to become a better Christian more and more each day.

Yes - I too read a chapter of the bible every day - I even try to go to mass every day too

it actually isn't that hard for me since I work at a religious cable T.V. station.

On an off-topic note, I heard that a girl was once such a Fundamentalist Christian that she thought dinosaur fossils were a test of faith by God...

Oh, I'm not surprised about that at all. We had a buddy in High School who believed that the Earth was only 10,000 years old. There are many people who won't believe in dinosaurs at all. Stranger still, there are people who still believe that the Earth is flat!

I don't like the idea of prankster god, as Bill Hicks once put it: I think people who believe that were sent here to test MY patience.

Nope don't read it nor do I plan on doing so... well I have a Children's bible.

Here's a little story. It might bore some but it's what me and religion have been going through all my life...

Growing up my family wasn't too religious. My grandparents used to go to church but no longer went and I never knew why and I still don't. My Italian grandmother though was pretty religious and still is and sometimes I went to church with her when I was pretty young. I was so bored but I was fascinated in the building. It had a creey, eerie feeling and I was oddly attracted to churches and still am but I've never beeen too religious.

Growing up I did believe in God but I never thought aobut things too much. Then there was a tragedy in my family in 1995. I lost my dad. We got close to a preacher guy (uh not sure his official title) and my grandparents (who were now taking care of us) and my sisters and I would go to church occassionally. That ended when the family left to move to a third world country to help spread religion and help build communities. Ah changing the world peacefully (I'm all for that!)

Then I met this girl and it changed my views drastically. She believed religion was a cult and becoming close to her I stopped believing in God and we would make fun of what we called 'fundies'. Since she lived in what she called 'bible belt USA' we made fun of everyone from the south too, people from Texas and then the government and Bush. (She doesn't really like her own country.) Oddly she is deeply against religions but reads the bible. During that time too it was hard to feel like God existed when so much of my immediate family was uhhhh... dying. I have a large family but my immediate family like grandparents, close aunts, father, mother and all dwindled from 15 to 5 pretty quickly. I became depressed and angry. I had not lost anyone since I was young and then things just cut lose I guess.

Anyways her and I were really close but my mindset began to change. I'm not religious still but I'm more like one of my closest friends now. We don't deny the existence of God nor say that he exists but I am respecting peoples beliefs a lot more and people who are so close minded or swing too far one way or the other I don't get along with.

I have read about a few religions but I have no interest at present to read the bible.

Well that's it I guess.

I was raised in a Catholic family. I read the Bible when I was a kid. But when I was about 18, I had been fully disenchanted by it and Christianity. I think it is a very good religion, but not for me. I converted to Wicca, which has more of my beliefs and theories on the world and how we fit into it.

Read or not read the Bible will not make you a good or a bad christian or catolic. You can read it, yes;you can act like i said; but you´ll be always acting like in the 3rd century.

God, and Jesus said once--I don´t know how to sad it in english--"amense los unos a los otros" do you think than a person who disrespecs another because doesn´t belive in dinosaurs or because he can´t eat red meat in fridays for a while?

It´s not about being christian, catolic, budist, islamist or whatever. It´s about respecting the others because if you respect them they respect you.

I heard once one church-lady "those people, the gays, are sinners and we need to turn them to the way of God" You may say "yes, because it´ how God said" but they´re judging them, and God also said to don´ judge the others because you´ll be judged too.
Personally, I´m not gay and I consider that smething than it´s isn´t love but jus being horny;But I have gay friends and I respect them--anyway, they´re te ons who goes to hell-- and they respect me.

Just fo finish, it´s not about being part of any rligion, or eating or not eaing this or that, those are your choses. But respecting the others, just ding that you´re a better persn, and of course a beter religion man or girl

I know that I vowed never to post in a religious debate on this website again, but I'm going to do so. I think as long as I don't upset anyone in the process, I will be fine.

Personally, I was raised as a Catholic and have been to a Catholic School, so I've come across the Bible a number of times. Even though I'm not super religious at this moment in time possibly thanks to school (I don't mind how they approach the religion for the major part, a few ways that they approach it annoys me), I personally love some of the Bible. I don't read it all the time, but I think it's a good book. I think that the ten commandments are a good thing. Six of them will most certainly make a good community (do you think murdering is a good idea?). The other four are aimed at loving God and may seem useless, but if you look at them metaphoricly, they do have some relavance;

Worship no god but me
Don't try to live two lives at once.

Don't worship idols
Don't become obsessive with things.

Do not use God's name in an offensive tone
Don't gossip, spread rumours or use words as a form of abuse.

Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy
Give yourself some free time from work or you'll panic.

To tell the truth, I regard the Bible as a motivation to lead a good life. Even if not looked at literally, it's stories appear to me as good fables.

I never really read the Bible...despite living in a huge Christian family (nor was it due to not having a Bible either! I own 4 of them). I was just never interested enough to sit down and read it myself. I know a lot about the Bible from going to church almost every Sunday until my early teens, but..you know what I mean?

Heck yeah! The Bible Rocks! In fact I even go to a Bible College!
I study that book day and night, and it never ceases to speak to my heart!
It can bring me joy, comfort, and it can also make me uncomfortable and challange me. If you don't want to read it, that's ok by me, but you really are missing out on some cool readin'!

You tell them that they are going to hell, and they respect you? That statement may be fooling some, but you're not convincing me that you have any respect. Maybe arrogance. You've just described perfectly the defination of oxymoron. How exactly are you respecting "them" when you say they are going to hell? You can't do both. It's a dangerous thing when humans start to presume that they have all of the answers, and that they know who is going to hell. Jesus made it a point to reach out to those who were rejected by society, with compassion. The study of Jesus the man is very fascinating, but the narrow minded attitudes of some of the so-called Christians are what I have a problem with. Religion should be about embracing everyone and their differences. But you're certainly free to believe whatever makes your mind happy

I think it's up to GOD, the forgiving and caring creator, to judge who goes to heaven or hell.
