Which would you rather have?

Post by Lady »

If God said you could have ONE of the following, which would you pick?

A) A brilliant career and lots of money
B) A spouse who is your soulmate and well-adjusted children
C) Genius-level intelligence (Einstein, Shakespeare)
D) Breathtaking beauty and charisma

Well?

Assume that you can go through this life time with only one of the above (realizing that most people never achieve any of the above). Basically ask yourself which has the biggest priority for you.

I'd say A) a brilliant career and lots of money. I'm a loner and would rather have casual friends than people who are part of my life 24/7 (I'd find that way too intrusive), I suppose I'm smart enough to hold my own, and looks don't last, so "A" seems the best choice to me. It's not that I think money is the greatest thing there is, but the thought of going out in the real world and having to find a decent enough job that would pay my bills somewhat terrifies me, so knowing that I'd have a great career with lots of money is very comforting to me.

I would pick B. Finding your soulmate is something that happens once in a lifetime, with that in hand there's no need for riches, success, intelligence, or beauty! Children are kind of the same. Once you look into your child's eye's for the first time, all other worries tend to lessen. To have both of these together for a lifetime would be NERVANA!!!

Interesting thread!

I'd answer "B", no doubt about it. I'd put family far above money, intelligence, or beauty.

You're right about how not many people achieve any of those on the list. But oh well, God's got a purpose for my life, and that's all that matters.

I encountered two problems when asnwering that question.

Firstly, I don't belive in an (interventionist) god. So I doubt he or should would really be giving me this option (Easy, Aaron - I'm not cruising for a debate this morning :P)

Also, with:

"B) A spouse who is your soulmate and well-adjusted children "

Firstly, why does it have to be a spouse, and not just someone you want to be with? And why do children have to come with the package? In my mind, they spoil a perfectly good relationship :D

The whole thing smacks of Christianity if you ask me!

Anwyays, to answer the question, I already have a beautiful soulmate, and that means I don't need any of the other things (although some money would be nice).

A) A brilliant career and lots of money
Hey, who would want to pick B, C or D when you have all the money? Money, money, and money I want to be filthy rich!!! Money is the root of all evil you become greedy and want to buy everything that you never had before.
But who cares lets be like Michael Eisner.

I've already got options C and D in check, I pick A!

stinking rich, super duper intelligence and ravishing good looks... I'd have option B in the palm of my hands!

I get everything.

I forgot you were gay Loomis. If you insist on being the devil's advocate, you can read option B of my original post as "partner who is your soulmate with the option of well adjusted children". :D

Why is it that if I don't think that marriage is the only option, that equates me with being gay? "He's not married - he must be gay!" Besides, the Christian conservative elements are ensuring that in both the US, and other western "democracies", gay marriage is illegal. You seem to be contributing to this side, by equating non-married couples with being gay.

I am not gay (although I'll leave my options open), but I am in a non-married relationship that is just as strong as any marriage. I just don't feel the need to stand in front of a bunch of people and sign a bit of paper to prove to everyone that I love the person I'm with. There is only one person who has to know that, and she does.

I stand by my original comment that this whole thing smacks of Christianity. Christianity is an OK idea, it is just that the followers are thick and ordinary.

God has already given me C and D which will enable me to eventually achieve A.

I love how several people here are claiming that they're geniuses on par with Einstein. rotfl

I agree with Loomis in that these four oversimplified "blessings" are a bit too Christian in aim, but of the four, I'd pick C. I've always been a cynical loner that's too observant for her own good... and I like it that way! ;) A bit of super-intelligence wouldn't hurt; I could wall myself up in my house and write breathtaking novels! :D

I would pick B)

Sure being loaded would be nice. But I rather have a lovely wife, and lovely children.

A, C, and D would probably give you more potential partners, but it would not guarantee that you would get B.

Gonna hafta go with B. I don't care if I'm as ugly, dumb and poor as a bum, as long as I have someone who I know will always love me for who I am and vice versa.

with my extraordinary unparalleled einsteinien intellect and expert knowledge of quantum physics, i'd construct a superpowered time displacement vessel out of an old stainless steel dmc model prototype able to reach light speeds that could transcend the three dimensional fabrics of the space time continuum, equiped with a dash mounted flux capacitor to employ the hierarchical structure of the cosmos as my stopwatch, and travel back to 1982 to scoop phoebe cates.
