Shrek: The Story So Far set in FULL SCREEN! :(

I am certainly not a big Shrek fan. (I really don't like what it stands for) However, I was at Costco yesterday picking up Buffy - Season 7, which was the exact same price in Best Buy... Grrrr... and The Story So Far set, which includes the 2 movies and a bonus disc, plus some stupid Shrek 3-D thing disc, for $35, and I figured that it sounded like a really good deal, plus I kinda liked the 2nd one, so I bought it and took it home and when I opened it, to my shock it was Full Screen!!! Actually, only the Shrek 1 and 2 discs were full screen, the Shrek 3-D disc was Widescreen! I don't get it! Wht the heck, would they make some crappy DTV thing that noone cares about Widescreen and present the actual movies in Full Screen!? Also I mean, this is a collector's set. Since when did Collector's and REAL movie buffs want Fullcreen over Widescreen. I was very upset, I went back hoping to exchange it for a set that was ALL Widescreen, but to my disappointment they only had Full Screen...

I'm wondering if an All Widescreen Edition is even in existence... Even if it is I don't want to have to pay regular retail price which I believe is upwards of $55+! Cause I'm not even that fanatical about the movies! I just want to pay $35 and get the movies in the Aspect ration that they were made and meant to be seen in!

I saw that it was fullscreen in some stores a month ago (HK even gets R1 discs faster than others ). Shame on Dreamworks for doing this terrible thing. Prince Philip, from now on you have to check the box for aspect ratio labels everytime you buy DVDs. And Shrek 2 is the most overrated film of all-time anyway.

Well...if you're willing to do a little search and spending...

You could look for the original Shrek in widescreen, preferably used. I think the WS was limited edition, as everywhere I go, the only original Shrek they have is P&S

Then you could buy a normal WS edition of Shrek 2.

Shrek 3D could be bought separately as well, but you won't need to get an extra.

Swap the P&S discs in The Story So Far for the WS discs you just bought, then sell the P&S discs (in the cases from your original Shrek and Shrek 2), maybe to a used DVD store. You'll lose some money, but it would be worth it just to have OAR.

The Story So Far: $35
Shrek WS: (varies, used is usually $10-$15)
Shrek 2 WS: (varies, new is around the $20 range now isn't it?)
Total Spent: at least $65, at most $70

Sell P&S Shrek in Shrek WS case: (I doubt they'd check it was the right disc, but you'd probably sell it for $10 if they accept it, and they most likely will because I once bought Spider-man used and found two disc 1's in it, so I don't think they check)
Sell P&S Shrek 2 in Shrek 2 WS case: (same as the first, but as a recent DVD release , you could sell it for $15-20)
Total earned back: at least $25, at most $30

End Price: at least $35, at most $45 (65-30=35 or 70-25=45)

But then again, I wouldn't do all that just for the one bonus disc.

Costco should have the coupons to get any Fox or WB DVD box set for $12.00 off after Thanksgiving like November 26th to November 30th.
But it might depend where your location is and what coupons are avaible their.

Well, what I did was, (yesterday as soon as I realized it was full screen, I returned it) I went by FYE today, and to my delight they actually had Jumangi, which is something I have been looking for for a while now, so I bought that and the Story So Far set... The manager of the store was nice enough to let me open it and exchange the fullscreen Shrek 2 for the Widescreen one. Inside the box are the dvd's still factory sealed, so it wasn't a big deal. They didn't have the Widescreen Shrek, but I remebered my mom has the Special Edition version, which includes the Widescreen version, so I swapped my mom's Widescreen DVD for the Fullscreen one that came in the set. She doesn't care as Widescreen and Special Features aren't a big deal for her...

So to make a long story short, I wound up paying $10 more at FYE, but atleast I now have the widescreen versions of each disc. The actual content in the set sucks, the bonus disc is an absolute joke! Purely aimed at little kids but I really like the case that the whole set comes in and that's really why I bought it, other wise I could have just gone out and bought Shrek 2, and saved myself a lot of money, but anyway, I'm happy with my purchase.

In any event I"ve kept the Costco/Sam's Club packaging for every other dvd I've ever bought from there, for some unkown reason, but I threw away the Buffy onne, so no more coupon... Oh well...

I actually think DreamWorks did this quite deliberately, myself. They know that collectors and uber-geeks like us can't pass up a box set and/or extra features; though I reckon they also know that we largely prefer widescreen. So if we wanted the extras, the box, and the films in their proper filmed ratio, we would have to buy at least one more thing - Shrek 2 in widescreen (and the original if one didn't already have it). That way DW can squeeze even more profits out of the small niche of crazy collectors that exist out there. DreamWorks, indeed, is far more shameless than Disney could ever hope to be.

I found out i am getting this for christmas (SHHHHHHHHH!) but i already own the collector's edition of the first film so i will probably just trade the shrek 2 P&S disc for a WS one when i get it.

By the way my mom is not a very good hider,last year i found half of my presents before christmas and had to act suprised when christmas finally came.

I bought the boxset at Costco and put my double disc Shrek and my widescreen Shrek 2 (which came with a bonus CD at Wal-mart) in the nifty box and gave the sealed fullscreen copies to a 5 year old who didn't know the difference. I felt good ,she was thrilled and I just pretended it came that way. And we sing along to the bonus Shrek 2 karaoke cd on our way to Disneyland. It's all good.

I needed to replace my hurricane lost Shrek SE and this looked to be the best way until I saw that it was strictly P&S. I ended up buying the SE at Best Buy & Shrek 2 & I'll have to live without Shrek 3D. I've heard the bonus disc is ultra lame but I wish there was a way to get the WS 3D disc cheap. I'll bet their sales of The Story So Far are way below their expectations since as was pointed out the people who would buy it want OAR movies. Most people are going to avoid it like the plague with 2 full screen movie discs. I wouldn't be surprised if, down the line, they rereleased it in WS.

I was at Circuit City today and I saw The Story So Far, but I checked the box and it said they were in full frame. Needless to say, I didn't pick it up (regardless of the fact that I didn't have enough $). I hate how I keep seeing deals on all the Shrek films, but only the fullscreen ones.

Does anyone know if Dreamworks did what Pixar did for their full frame presentations? Not quite "Pan & Scan", but they kind of squeezed into 4:3. I don't know if this was done for Shrek. Even if it was, I still wouldn't buy it.

I know you're joking, but are you saying that because you think they're bad or that they get bad releases? Prince of Egypt, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron, and Sinbad are all superb movies. I only own Sinbad on DVD (and it's a good release) but I'd like to get the others. However those are all traditionally animated. Shrek was good, and Shrek 2 was ok, but I'm avoiding Shark Tale like the plague and that goes for Madagascar also.
