How do you buy your TV series?
In the same way I made a post on Poll on how you buy your regular DVDS now I come with this one that is very similar. But since the answers are going to be personal I made this post.
Given the fact that TV series double the price of a regular movie or sometimes even more, how you manage to buy them? And/or especially when you want to buy a movie (or couple).

In my case I just buy: Xena and The Simpsons.
With The Simpsons I'm only missing one season: the third.
With Xena I'm way behind it. I just have Season One. The reason is because this one is very expensive.
How do I buy them? As you see, not that often. I usually go out and buy them when I'm reminded by the new season release. Or by seeing it in stores.
Or when I'm watching again the series and I feel the desire to go and buy more.
Thankfully, as I said I'm only collecting those two. And I'm going to stay that way.

So far I own all of The Simpsons series and I only need one more to complete my Futurama series. Yes, Xena and Hercules are far expensive to buy all the sets. I also own the first four Friends series.

The Simpsons Season 11 Buy it Now!
Fox Sunday lineup:
8:00 The Simpsons
8:30 King of the Hill
9:00 Family Guy
9:30 American Dad

I own both seasons of the Osbournes, the only one I'm missing is the season 2 1/2 DVD and I have the first season of punk'd. I normally just buy regular DVDs because the TV DVDs are just too expensive.

There's a good number of tv shows I like, but the determining factor is replay value. Some shows I love watching on tv but can't see myself watching them over and over again on DVD (like Roseanne). Other shows I love and want to own on DVD because I know I'll be watching them repeatedly (like Friends). Price isn't a determining factor for me since most shows are over 30 bucks. Right now I only own Friends (Seasons 1-7), but I plan on buying The Golden Girls (Season 1) and the Gilmore Girls (Seasons 1 and 2) this year, as well as Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie next year.

I don't have many TV DVD's, just the following:
The Lucy Show - 28 Episodes (4-disc)
The Lucy Show - 10 Episodes (2-disc, same 10 are on the 28-episode set)
The Lucy Show - 10 Episodes (2-disc, 9 are on the 28-episode set, 1 isn't)
Ozzie and Harriet - 20 Episodes (2-disc)
Make Room for Daddy - 3 Episodes (1-disc, dollar DVD. Season 5 was just released on DVD, and I think these are from Season 1)
Bonanza- 2 Episodes (1-disc, dollar DVD)
Tales of Tomorrow - 3 Episodes (1-disc, dollar DVD)
Mr. and Mrs. North - 3 Episodes (1-disc, dollar DVD)
Friends: The Series Finale - 3 Episodes (1-disc)
Star Trek: The Original Series, Vol. 8 - 2 Episodes (1-disc)
Coupling: Season 1 - 6 Episodes (1-disc)
Coupling: Season 2 - 9 Episodes (2-disc)
Once I ever can save enough money, I wanna buy the rest of Coupling, the season sets for I Love Lucy, and of course, The Golden Girls when it comes out two weeks from now.

Fortunately, I'm not into any hour-long series except for "ER." I have a select handful of favorites that have been released to DVDs, and they're generally sitcoms and generally not price TOO high. "ER" will probably pose problems, but as much as I like the show and as good of a deal as it is when you break it down, I'll probably pass on everything past season 4 or so.

LOL, I'm the opposite, as I'm waiting for anything past season 5! I never got into the first 5 seasons, and only started watching regularly in 2000.Luke wrote:I'll probably pass on everything past season 4 or so.

Ok, but do you keep track on them and save money for when they come out?
Or just go an X day and buy them when you see them?
Or when about to buy the series don't buy any regular movies prior to the date so you can have money for it?
Or you don't mind keeping track on them and just buy them when you please?

I am so addicted to TV on DVD, but as someone mentioned earlier I do consider replay value for the most part. There are certain shows that I have only discovered on DVD. These inlcude:
Firefly
Farscape
Roswell
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (always wanted to watch this but didn't get WB until I oved to college during its last season)
Angel
Alias (addicted)
Gilmore Girls (same as with Buffy)
The Ben Stiller Show
Others I have either in full or partial (as of now) are:
Smallville
24
Simpsons
Family Guy
Invader Zim
Futurama
Spongebob Squarepants
X-Files
Batman: TAS
Freaks and Geeks (my all-time Fave TV show)
My So-Called Life
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Reno 911!
The OC
Arrested Development
I think that is all. I want to get Everwood, All in the Family, and Seinfeld (in a few more weeks).
As far as buying them, I usually check out dvdpricesearch.com to find the best price. I also get a lot of them as gifts.

Some of the TV seasons boxes I've bought have been because I never catched them on TV. Another reason is i can't do the ritual thing of being on TV at the same batchannel at the same bathour every week (specially since i almost never turn the TV tuner on!
) and having a whole season in a box lets me watch it in big chunks/marathons like if it was a miniseries at leisure
It's specialy satisfying when the TV series has some resemblance of a story arc or you can see how the characters and stories developed as they were produced. Of course the dvds look usually much better than the cable box quality i get
with no ads cuts etc and some in widescereen 16:9
The problem with TV shows is that they are huge in length so even when the box sets are relatively cheap by the minute they still expen$ive so i don't buy as many as i want!
Also, since I try to collect in the best quality format posible (which sometimes is PAL
) well TV presents a special challenge trying to decide which region a set should be to see it at it's best (See the PAL transfers topic ;P) so I have to choose carefully. Right now Buffy Seasons 1 and 2 i have on NTSC but the following ones will probably be PAL sets (one of them has to be particulary PAL region 4) So i don't usually buy tv on impulse but only after carefully planning and strategy sessions in the War Room in consultation of HE.
For example:
I would like to buy the whole Babylon5 thinguie, but since the live action was shot on film at 24fps and the CGI effects were rendered in 4:3 NTSC 30fps choosing which to buy is a royal mess. If you buy the PAL you get better quality on the live action, but on the NTSC the SFX are in 30fps so they should be better. BUT they somehow screwed the 4:3 letterboxing-widescreen to 16:9 widescreen conversion on them so they look much worse than they should. (I know a partial fix to make it look good, but it doesn't give you all the quality back as if they had done it right from the start) so right now Babylon5 purchasing is in stasis (I have just season 1 NTSC) till a solution to this comes up. (Well i have the solution: buy the PALs and record the whole NTSC 4:3 broadcasts off the air and go to the Lab. But I can't implement that right now
)
One thing i'd like to buy would be Birds of Prey

as of late, tv shows are the only thing i've been buying. i have all of futurama and i'm sad that there is no more (although that 4th box is so gushy i don't know if i'd want to see what comes next) and i'm always at the store on simpson release day. i'm caught up on land of the lost and south park but i have a slew of television shows on dvd to watch. one of the best shows i got to watching was greg the bunny and my laptop crashed and won't power up with my greg the bunny dvd in there- the one that has all the shows
but the first two i watched were killer. anywho...i have a whole section cut out for tv shows in the link in my signature.

I now buy more TV DVDs than I do movie DVDs. As a fan of British TV-I own quite a few of the British shows that have come out. But I also have several American faves. Some shows I buy immediately when they come out-others I wait on until I have extra money.
British Shows I currently have-
Doctor Who (nearly all the DVDs released so far in the US)
Father Ted (the entire series)
Are You Being Served (Series 1-5)
Are you Being Served Again (entire series)
Monarch of the Glen (series 1-2)
BallyKissAngel (series 1-2)
At Home with the Braitwaites (series 1)
As Time Goes by (Series 1-2)
Vicar of Dibley (entire series)
The World at War (entire series)
American Shows I currently have-
Felicity (Seasons 1-3)
Sliders (Seasons 1-2)
Hercules (Seasons 1-2)
Xena (Seasons 1-3)
Lost World (Seasons 1-2)
MASH (Seasons 1-2)
PBS Civil War (entire series)
Dr. Quinn (Season 1)
Need to work on MASH, Dr Quinn, Hercules and Xena and As Time Goes By, otherwise I am caught up. Show I would like to own include Popular (a guilty pleasure, kinda like Felicity), Lost in Space (a favorite), and Charmed when it's released in 2005 (yes, it is coming out!)
