Which Disney films would you remake?
Which Disney films would you remake?
Some may see film remakes as a sign of complacency or unoriginality. But remakes have been a significant part of Walt Disney Pictures' output over the last 15 years or so, and with new versions of Swiss Family Robinson and The Shaggy Dog in the works, they won't be going away anytime soon.
I think remakes often are at less of a disadvantage from get-go than sequels. Remakes of films that are 25-35 years old have worked fairly well: The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday. By contrast, you won't find many sequels that far removed from a predecessor doing that well.
Are there any live action or animated Disney films that you think lend themselves to being remade, presumably as a live action film? For instance, Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians were somewhat 'remade' as live action Disney films.
The only one I can think is "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" segment from The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad. Others have tackled the Washington Irving story, most notably Tim Burton's "reimagining" in Sleepy Hollow, but a faithful adaptation as a live action Disney film is something that I think could work pretty well. And if nothing else, it might introduce more people to the studio's fantastic 1949 animated film!
Any ideas or ponderings?

Disney Films Would I Remake
I would remake None of them, I hate remakes
Remakes are bad. And whenever they remake a movie they always ruin it.

I'd really like to see an Ever After-esque take on Sleeping Beauty.
I've been a long-time advocate of a Pete's Dragon remake as well (with cameos from the original cast but Amy Grant taking up the role of Nora!
). A sequel would be cool, too, if it used the original cast for their same roles (or a new cast if it were a sequel to a remake). Of course, it would be a musical!
What about a live action Fantasia? Hmmm....

remakes are good if it has a good writer and director. i'm not a big fan of animated stories turning into live action. i didn't really like the pinocchio one with the italian actor that one an oscar for another italian movie. and i didn't like the jungle book live action one either. 101 dalmations was good, though. what i would like is for a couple of the sequels to be remade, if that's possible - like Cinderella 2. in my opinion, that wasn't a movie, to me it was a like one of those cartoon marathons they show on those B list holidays, you know like on Labor day.
anyways, i'm rambling. i guess if there was one disney movie i'd really like to see remade is Mulan. I think that could be a good live action film, even though I just said that I don't like animation turning live action. i'm so hypocritical.

In about 15 years a Hocus Pocus remake might be fun. And I think The Watcher in the Woods deserves one now. I mean, Scarlett Johannsen and Lynn Holly Johnson are practically twins! [drag cursor]Heck LHJ could even play the adult Karen if they go with the original ending with Karen being unaged.
As for Animation to Live Action remakes, I think a Live Action retelling of Pinocchio(other than those horrible ones with Roberto Benigni and Jonathan Taylor Thomas) might be fun with the right cast and crew.

Jack, I totally agree with you. I've always wanted someone like Tim Burton to make a live action version of Alice in Wonderland. There have been live action versions of Alice in the past, but a lot of them are lacklustre like the 1970s version starring Fiona Fullerton.Jack wrote:ALICE IN WONDERLAND in LIVE-ACTION. I've always thought that would be awesome. But it would have to be done by the right director (I'm leaning towards Tim Burton).

Re: Disney Films Would I Remake
Well not all remakes are bad. The Ten Commandments 1956 was a remake and I thought it was pretty good.Disney Guru wrote: Remakes are bad. And whenever they remake a movie they always ruin it.
But yes, the bulk of remakes are bad. But that's because the execs probably don't see it as a remake, but just "a tried-and-true idea that worked then, and maybe we can make some money off it now". Starsky and Hutch, Charlie's Angels, those are bad remakes. Mission Impossible was pretty good, but the second one was just blah.
As for Disney remakes, I've always wanted a Bedknobs and Broomsticks sequel, but if I can't get that, a remake would be good. Heck, they can even get Angela Lansbury to play Miss Price again!
Mary Poppins...um...I can't really see a remake. Especially after that rumor that Queen Latifah would playing Ms. Poppins.
I always thought it'd be cool if we could see a live-action remake of Disney's version of Aladdin. But if they were to do it today, Genie would be one horribly rendered CGI that would come off as annoying rather than funny.

Here is something to excite you: Dakota Fanning is in talks to star in DreamWorks potential franchise in adaptations of Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass'. The project will be adapted by Les Bohem, who pitched it to Steven Spielberg with Fanning in mind to play Alice.Wonderlicious wrote:Jack, I totally agree with you. For remakes, I wouldn't want Mary Poppins or Bedknobs and Broomsticks, I'd like to see films that are not that well recieved as they could of been. So the film would be as brilliant as what the first film should of been and fix something that didn't work the way it should, not just to make money or see the same thing in a new enviroment/era.
I agree with JM maybe Hocus Pocus

I love Pete's Dragon, but I couldn't see it working as a remake. Somehow, it's hard to imagine it being removed from the 1970's cheese that it drowns in. That's what makes it special. Bedknobs and Broomsticks, however, has lots more potential. Throw in a couple of new, catchy songs, along with a star-studded cast, and Disney would have a hit on their hands. Especially in light of the recent success of adolescent-fiction adaptations of late, like Harry Potter and the soon-to-be-released Lemony Snicket film. (Bedknobs was originally a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... children's book).
P.S. As far as Mary Poppins, how could you improve on perfection? The biggest flaw in the original version is Dick van Dyke's horrible accent, but that is easily overshadowed by his charming performance.

I'm a dork for suggesting this but I think that Disney could make a live action version of Oliver & Company that would be more loyal to Charles Dicken's original novel. It would be interesting plus it wont be a 85% cardboard retelling like 101 Dalmations.
I guess the only way this would work is if the focus was in the right place: story!

I enjoyed the remake of The Absent Minded Professor as it was done with a generous budget, unlike The Parent Trap which demonstrated the results of a low budget. I am looking forward to seeing some of the remakes now in production as they all stem from fun stories

I would like a remake of the animated films of the "Dark Ages" which where during the 70's and 80's. The Fox and the Hound could've been one of the best the studio has ever had if it weren't for the lack of good songs and a better story. I know this won't happen, but I think certain animated movie can be "fixed" or maybe just remade.....my opinion..

A friend and I have always talked about wanting to remake "The Santa Clause". It's an excellent movie, but we watch it and come up with ways to strengthen scenes, edit the existing ones, and perhaps "update" it a little (hastn' aged too much, but we've come up with a lot we could do).
The one thing that gets us both is that Tim Allen and Wendy Crewson seem a tad "old" to be parents of a child Charlie's age (we want them to be a younger couple, who divorce during the movie).

I would automatically say Alice in Wonderland, but I've known about the Dreamworks version in the works starring Dakota Fanning for a while now, so that option's out. I'd love to see a live action version of Hunchback. There've been various live action Hunchbacks, but Disney can set theirs apart by basing it off of the musical playing in Germany now (there were talks about making it into a tv movie, but for some reason it got canned). I also think Mulan would make a great epic war drama for older folks, especially since it isn't a story that's been done to death ala Cinderella or Alice in Wonderland. Call me crazy, but I'd be interested in seeing a live action Pooh film based on the Milne books (like the original 70's feature) but with a real live Christopher Robin and either animatronics or stop motion animation for the rest of the cast. You may say that that sort of is already done with Book of Pooh, but what I'm envisioning is something more in tune with the Ernest Shepard illustrations set in real natural environments. I think it could turn out quite charming if done subtly and not in your face.
