Welcome to the forum and thanks for the info!
While I'm sure some of these are subject to change, some of these dates have appeared before so they're probably rather firm.
January's SEs appear all but announced, now. Hopefully, they'll be worth the upgrades.
Still no official word on the March '04 Platinum yet.
Thanks again - hope you'll stick around!

Disney have nothing to lose from re-releasing Alice, Pocahontas and Stitch in January next year because they've already run out of first release's for the 42 classics* anway now so they need to release something to do with these films. They must be the biggest sellers for disney. I'm definately going tp be buying these.
I hope the release date for Brother Bear gets changed because that date at the moment make it seem that Disney has little faith in it doing very well and just hope to make a few bucks on the video sales, which is sad.
Also I hope with the release of "Mulan 2" that we see a re-release of "Mulan" (2-disc please disney if you read this,
LOL!)
*(And dont say what about Bambi and Cinderella because their platinum and dont count and I bet one of those two, probably Cinderella, will be the March platinum anyway).

Okay... wait a minute... Pocahontas is a SE now??
Thats good to hear, but...
Aladdin Special Edition???
What the hell is going on with SE & Platinum, I dont see any Platinum labels on that list, where's Aladdin??
Is Disney purposefuly trying to annoy me?
Also whats with the cheapquals getting SE treatment??

I dunno folks! LOL I just pass on from what I've read in our books that come into the store on all the releases of the new movies and their street release date and what the books says they are. Another place that you can find out a lot of information on releases is www.comingsoon.net Just thought that I would pass some helpful information out to you folks. As I find out more, I'll be glad to pass the info on!

Aladdin is part of the Platinum Collection, whereas the 3 titles being re-released in January are not, although the way they're all labeled "Special Edition" seems like another instance of Disney mixing up misleading nomenclature.
Mostly irrelevant, but I don't suspect January's SEs to be as "immersive" as the Platinum Editions were originally designed to be.

So the title is botched or theyre releasing the dvd under 2 different labels?Luke wrote:Aladdin is part of the Platinum Collection, whereas the 3 titles being re-released in January are not, although the way they're all labeled "Special Edition" seems like another instance of Disney mixing up misleading nomenclature.

(I'm referring to Aladdin btw)
STASHONE see this thread for some people's ideas on the Platinum/Special Edition situation:

I hope the January SE's are at least 2-discs. I mean, even packed 1-disc editions would be nicer than the current practically-barebones discs, but I'd still like to see 2-disc sets.
As for the whole special edition hullabaloo, the lists have said Aladdin Special Edition most likely because it'll have a new scene inserted into the film (just like with Beauty and the Beast and Lion King, which were also special editions). Disney has two definitions for special edition-the first is a DVD with features that are superior to whatever was on the previous edition, and the other definition is a movie that has a new scene(s) inserted into the film, as well as minor tweaks. Aladdin will fall under the latter definition, but still be called platinum, while the January release of Alice, Pocahontas, and Lilo will be the former.

Yeah, but even when we suspected they were calling the new cut of the film a "Special Edition", the revised Lion King artwork seems to suggest it's the DVD type they're referring to:

Aaarggh... Im tired of specualtion, why doesnt Disney make a formal statement about this already!!
If I have to purchase one more "final cut" dvd only to have it replaced by a superior reissue of the title 3 years down the line, Im gonna kill somebody!!!! I thought this Platinum line finally started making sense a few months ago!!!

Disneykid, don't you find it strange that on the whole Disney website, the Lion King is not mentioned as a Platinum release anywhere. The only reference to Platinum is on shots of the disc's cover. Even the official site for the DVD release has no mention of "Platinum"
http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/anima ... /lionking/
(That said, they will obviously update the page soon to show the special features - but I still would expect Platinum to be somewhere on their now. The Snow White and Beauty and the Beast pages had the Platinum branding before their specifications were posted)
While I'm not sure if they are dropping "Platinum" - all evidence suggests that they are. No one can deny that they are downplaying it. Even if Aladdin does have a "Platinum" banner at the top of the disc cover, I doubt it will be promoted anywhere as a "Platinum" release.

My theory is everybody knows what a "Special Edition" is, not everybody knows what a "Platinum Edition" is - Disney have to advertise the benefits of a platinum release more, advertising space/time/money that could be spent on advertising the film.

Well, today, while I was visiting the Disney Store, I saw the advertisement for the new lion king release. On it, I was surprised to see the "Special Edition". And this BIG CARDBOARD POSTER, is fairly new... So, who knows..
If it was me, I would stick with the platinum title, and keep it released to the first day of Feb. Consistancy is KEY. Maybe not short term, but long term it is. All Eisner, or whoever controlls the whole "marketing" scheme, is messing up, I think. Why advertise the whole "New Platinum every year", when you're going to change them all to Special Editions... And I'm sure everyone's collection would be so nice with Snow White PE, BEauty and the Beast PE, Lion King SE, and then disney decides Aladdin PE! That would be funny, and now I'm rambling, so I'll stop!
Although, either way, I'm still going to purchase the films, so really it doesn't matter one bit to me!

Alice in Wonderland SE
Pocahontas SE
Lilo & Stitch SE
Man am I glad that I can finally get THREE of the films I have held out on for so long.
As for the whole "Platinum" vs "Special Edition" thing, I have a theory.
When Disney originally announced these tentative titles and dates in the Platinum Family my first inclination was "No Way". By the time 2007/2008 rolls around we'll probably be well into the next big thing in home vidoe technology (HD-DVD??) and I thought Disney risked leaving some serious revenue on the table by holding out so long on some of those titles. We as consumers have demonstrated our desire and willingness to spend $25-$30 on these SEs and Treasures NOW...so why put things off and risk losing out all-together?
So my theory is that this is a realization that is not lost on "the powers-that-be". Initially we've seen a shift from one PE a year to two, and the subtle name change from PE to SE on The Lion King may be another step in moving away from that line of thinking. I guess the real litmus test will be the discs we see with the January SE releases and how packed they'll be.
