Films that don't deserve to be in the Platinum line...
Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Aladdin, Bambi, Cinderella deserve the title, but I think there are some that don't. Jungle Book in my opinion is not platinum worthy, and neither is 101 Dalmatians.
Disney should've included great timeless classics such as Pinocchio and Fantasia. The Little Mermaid deserved an earlier release date than cinderella. That way, everybody by next october would have the Renaissance movies completed.
What do you guys think?? What are some movie that deserve the platinum treatment and those that don't?

Platinum (in Disney's marketing case) is based on which movies sold best in home video releases.
And Pinocchio and Fantasia were added to the Platinum line, along with Sleeping Beauty and Peter Pan. (go here: http://www.ultimatedisney.com/releasetypes.htm and scroll down to the Platinum section)
But if we were going by artistic integrity, then yeah, I probably wouldn't include some of their choices (IMO, they should've made Hunchback a platinum, even if I'm not a big fan of the film, they have wonderful visuals and music.)
I've always wondered why they never did a Platinum series for their live-action movies. Of course, we had Vault Disney, but they don't use that wonderful name anymore, those bastards. Mary Poppins could have easily been their first in Live-Action Platinum, and I would've followed that up with Bedknobs and Broomsticks (mainly cause I love that movie), and
of course Song of the South and So Dear to My Heart.
Fantasy Live Action Platinum Series: (of course, they're all my favorites so there's already a bias)
Mary Poppins
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
(The rest are in chrono order of theatrical release)
Song of the South
So Dear to My Heart
Treasure Island (current is barebones)
The Shaggy Dog
The Absent-Minded Professor (current is barebones, I think)
Escape to Witch Mountain (should've been a 2-disc, right?)
Pete's Dragon
Honey I Shrunk the Kids (lol)
The Rocketeer (lol again)
White Fang
The Parent Trap (I want a 2-disc dammit!)
The Country Bears (just kidding)

are you kidding!? 101 Dalmations ROCKED!!! What's w/ all the haters of this film? man alive. If anything I'd say Fantasia, Pinnochio, and Fantasia 2000 don't deserve Platinum Titles, although I wouldn't object them whatsoever
Don't get me wrong, i've been a HUGE Disney fan my whole life since I was a kid, but some titles seem stronger to me...

As Escapay brought out, the movies inducted into the Platinum Edition line weren't inducted to so as to say "These are the 10 best Disney movies." It has nothing to do with the quality of the movie, but rather the video sales.
However, judging by quality, I'd much rather have Pinocchio and Dumbo take the place of The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians in the current line-up. TJB & 101D are good movies, but I don't think they stand out in the Disney cannon as masterpieces, whereas Pinocchio & Dumbo do, I think.

Yet again, I concur with Jack and Escapay. It doesn't make sense to say "That doesn't belong with the top-selling collection." Sure it does. It's sold lots and lots of copies. For what it's worth, <i>Pinocchio</i> is a favorite (more so than most others) and I'm not particularly a great fan of <i>Lady and the Tramp</i> or <i>Cinderella</i> (really would have to watch them again, but they weren't among the best of the best).Jack wrote:As Escapay brought out, the movies inducted into the Platinum Edition line weren't inducted to so as to say "These are the 10 best Disney movies." I suspect that the 4 which were added to the Platinum Collection (<i>Sleeping Beauty</i>, <i>Peter Pan</i>, <i>Pinocchio</i>, and <i>Fantasia</i>) last year are probably the 11th-14th best-selling titles (at least based on video sales, prior to the advent of DVD) and those four are good movies too.
Then there are recent movies (like <i>Tarzan</i> and <i>Lilo & Stitch</i>) that are among my favorite, and probably have sold well, but don't need to be part of the Platinum Collection. And <i>Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh</i>, which I'm sure has sold reasonably well, but also has a fine DVD treatment.

I don't feel that 101 Dalmatians or The Jungle Book should be on the platinum line. The 14 titles are Disney's bestselling, fine. But I don't like the way they market them as being the "best movies ever made" and frankly, if the platinum line was like that, Disney would have to put Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo on to their 14 title list instead of Dalmatians and Jungle.

Well, I don't think that The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians or Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 should have gotten a Platinum DVD treatment. I don't believe that they were that good.

I don't think 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book belong in the Platinum Collection. Realistically, I think Dumbo and Alice in Wonderland should replace them. In in terms of a perfect world, though, I'd like to see Alice and Hunchback replace them, though of course that'll never happen (though Alice has gotten solid SE treatment, and Hunchback will, too).

I like 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book.
But I don't really believe they deserve to be in the platinum line.
I don't like Bambi at all, and I don't think it's one of Disney's best,
much less one of their "goods".
I do believe that Peter Pan and Pinocchio deserve to be in it as well...
But I still believe that Mary Poppins should have been included in it
as well...
but hey...I won't complain I get a Platinum Edition Mary Poppins without the Platinum Banner this December!
The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp and Cinderella DEFINATELY ARE THE BEST LEFT in the group. But Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast are my favorites, and I already have those.
Is there anyone out there who doesn't really like the Lion King much either!?

101 Dalmatians: I was (and for the most part still am) excited for the 2-disc DVD. Then I got the Limited Issue for $40. So, I'm kind of liking the 101 Dalmatians 2-disc DVD coming late, because I want my Limited Issue version to be valuable as long as it can be.
Any way, I definatley think 101 deserves to be a platinum. But Disney has no clue what there doing now, so it doesn't matter. For example, Sleeping Beauty, a great DVD release, worth every penny, was pushed out of the spotlight by the "king of all DVDs" The Lion King, which was a terrible release. In the words of Rodney Dangerfield, NO RESPECT! I don't really like The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, or (please hold your fire) Bambi. Maybey because they're animal movies, no wait, that can't be it (Dalmatians and King are animated animal movies I enjoy. Who knows?

What's with all the hating on "101 Dalmatians" and "The Jungle Book"?!
I think they're great films!
Granted, "101 Dalmatians" lacks in its artistic quality (at least in the first half of the film) but it still has a great plot and is hugely, hugely, popular.
"The Jungle Book" is also a favorite, how can anyone not like this film??? From the animation, to the music, to everything!
I absolutely love this film. And they way they drew the jungle just takes my breath away

Mhm.....The Jungle Book's animation in my opinion (fans don't hate me later) had poor animation. It looked rather rushed to me. It didn't even compare to older films like Lady and the Tramp or Snow White. An example..did the characters have any shadows???Did you see how fake the fire look?

I think Cinderella and The Jungle Book deserve to be taken out of the Platinum Edition line - both had a thin storyline and only modestly hummable tunes at best.
I agree that The Little Mermaid should be moved to an earlier street date, because not only is it a Disney classic in every sense of the word, but it helped keep Disney from going under and as such, helped produced wonderful films such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Mulan. And plus, it seems that every board member here likes the movie, so why not a sooner release date?
TLM deserves every bell and whistle on it's future 2-disc DVD re-release. At least the 2006 release date is much sooner than the 2008 release it was proported to have before Disney changed their Platinum Edition release plans. You can bet I'll pick it up the day it hits shelves.
