Aladdin DVD sales figures?

does anyone know what the sales figures were for the aladdin dvd during it's opening week? I would think they were quite high since this is such a popular movie.

I was told that they were less than Disney had hoped for. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that they were bad, and I can't imagine that they would be.

I've been wondering the same thing. We got TLK's first day sales figures very soon after the release in 2003.

My guess is probably 1 million in first days sales, with very good legs. The trouble with Aladdin is, I don't think its as "remembered" as TLK & BATB, and probably didn't open as strong (as Aaron just brought out). I think by the time the holidays are here though, it will have done very well.

Well, I don't believe it was number one. The top spot went to Farenheit 9/11 which sold two million copies its first day and was expected to sell a million more by the end of the week, for a grand total of circa 3 million copies. If Disney sold just under that much, then it would hold down the #2 spot and be almost on par with The Lion King. A little dissapointing for fans like me, but it's nowhere near a letdown.

Hmm, I wonder if it was a good thing (financially speaking) to keep "Aladdin" out of the market for so long.

I'm really confident with "Aladdin"'s sales. I definitely see it topping the 7 million copies "Snow White" and "Beauty and the Beast" sold. There's no reason why it'll sell less than those two, especially since "Aladdin" is arguably Disney's second biggest hit ever and remains as relevant as ever. It's a winner, no doubt about it.

In the long run, I'd think that Aladdin would outsell Fahrenheit 9/11. For one there's the latter's timeliness, which will remove part of its motives/appeal come November 2.

But more importantly, there is Aladdin's wide appeal - this, not Fahrenheit 9/11, is likely to make a good Christmas gift for families, friends. There's 2 months, 1 week, and 2 days until Christmas, and in that time period, there will be more promotion and day-after-Thanksgiving sales. Ultimately, I'm sure Aladdin will sell alright. Didn't we have this discussion about The Lion King last year?

There isn't always a direct correlation between quality of product and sales, but I do hope that such a fine movie/DVD is rewarded with satisfying response from the public.

Gotcha loud and clear!

Joe Carioca brought out a good point though. I think this film is the longest Disney has ever vaulted one of their classics in the post-home video era. Even without that era, most of Disney's classics were released quite frequently in theaters, so people really learned to love them. I think Joe definately may have started something.

Luke, I don't think anyone is arguing that it will sell well. What we're pondering is if its maximum sales have been somehow minimized.

Like you said, I hope Disney doesn't feel that a beautiful DVD that doesn't move as much copies as The Lion King will mean that consumers aren't concerned with quality features.

Taking second place to such an important film (F911) really isn't a bad thing. I love Aladdin, so I wish it could be #1, but it's certainly not the worst thing ever.

Ya. It's like DreamWorks releasing Shrek and its sequel to DVD on Fridays. Like the Fridays that Pixar's new films are out. I don't know about them. What's next? Copying subject matter?!

aladdin will win in the long -run. i think it has better legs. people are buying F911 just to see it this week, and THEN they will pick up aladdin

Wow, 4th place is not bad! especially when you consider that all lot of stores have sold out of little britain and that peter kay thing because they are such big sellers!

It will be interesting to see how far it drops for this week as reflected in the Amazon and Sendit Charts. (Although these Internet retailer charts are distorted, as they also include pre-orders. However, like I said, a number of unexpected titles seem to be selling more - such as "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" released on the same day)
