Disney Animation at the Box Office

Post by Jack »

I've never seen a chart on this, so I figured I'd do one. All numerical statistics are taken from BoxOfficeMojo.com. Enjoy.

Re: Top Animated Classics at the Box Office

Just for fun, here's a list of the movies' grosses adjusted for the higher ticket prices of today. Keep in mind that this chart is not to say "this is how much an older movie would make if it were released today". There are a lot of factors that go into a movie's gross. It's just for fun.

TOP 10 ADJUSTED FOR INFLATION

Rank / Title........................................Lifetime Gross.........Date of Original Release

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs...$669,260,000.........2/21/1937
2. 101 Dalmatians...............................$613,491,900.........1/25/1961
3. Fantasia.........................................$509,886,900..........1/29/1941
4. The Lion King..................................$474,203,200.........6/15/1994
5. The Jungle Book.............................$452,394,700..........10/18/1967
6. Sleeping Beauty..............................$446,231,000..........1/29/1959
7. Bambi............................................$432,311,300..........8/21/1942
8. Pinocchio.......................................$413,856,500...........2/9/1940
9. Lady and the Tramp........................$342,212,200...........6/22/1955
10. Aladdin.........................................$321,996,000..........11/13/1992

Interesting. So if they were using the first chart, then the original Platinum line-up would have been:

The Lion King
Aladdin
Snow White
Beauty and the Beast
Tarzan
Lilo & Stitch
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
Pocahontas
Mulan

Yuck, I wouldn't like those 10 nearly as much as the 10 we are getting!

Even the adjusted list of 10 is different (and not as likeable, imo) as what we have now.

By the way, the only major animated classic I couldn't find stats for was DUMBO. I have no clue why.

Wow! I didn't realize 101 Dalmations was so far up on both lists. And that Sleeping Beauty was pretty big on the adjusted list.

Wow! Thanks Jack :thumb:

I've often wondered how they would rank by box office takings. I am actually quite surprised by a few of those results.

One question though, are they US domestic box office grosses or worldwide? I'm guessing they're US because i know Brother Bear has made over $300,000,000 worldwide.

Yes, they're just domestic. I can whip up a worldwide list too, that's a good idea.

Thanks Jack. I think a worldwide gross top 20 would probably give a more accurate view of the popularity of movies. I know Brother bear didn't really do fantastically at the US box office, but was number 1 in Germany for a couple of weeks.

Cool list, Jack Jack! It's weird to think that Mulan made more money than The Little Mermaid, but the 9 years that separate them make The Little Mermaid an unprecedented success and Mulan merely a modest hit.

Actually, $111 milion is the original release's grosses and the 1998 rerelease counted together. "The Little Mermaid" grossed around 80 million in its original release.

By the way, very nice topic. It was good to see that "Pocahontas" is still high on the list. :D

The problem is, there aren't any definate statistics for DVD sales, like there are box office takes. It sucks, I know.

Yes, I could do that. But there's more than just Dumbo missing (I said it was the only "major" classic missing). None of the anthology features have data available. Cinderella only has data available for the 80s re-releases.

Nonetheless, I'll do another list of the remaining classics as soon as I can.

I have the income for some of these films in a few of my books. I'll try to do a little research later. :)

How do the Pixar movies stack up? I know that Finding Nemo outgrossed even The Lion King, but I don't know how well the other four have done.
