why wasnt sleeping Beauty a platinum?
clearly one of Disneys classics and much better than say 101 dalmations or Dumbo, why did it not get a platinum release? although the special edition and platinum edition are basically the same exact thing.

"Sleeping Beauty" wasn't initially part of the platinum edition line because that line includes Disney's top 10 best-selling titles on video. "Sleeping Beauty" unfortunately does not rank high in terms of sales. It tanked back in its theatrical release in 1959 but not only there.
For example, back in its 1986 video debut, it sold a mere million copies, while "Lady and the Tramp", which followed a year later, sold more than 3 million and "Bambi", released in 1989, about 8 million. And even in rentals, titles like "The Little Mermaid", "Cinderella" and "The Jungle Book" grossed in some $40-$60 million while "Beauty" only $21 million.
That goes to show you, that although a fantastic film, it's just not as popular [with the general audience] as the other classics.
Sadly, it's true, especially since it used to be my favorite Disney classic (along with "Mermaid") for years.

It also goes to show, that as VCR ownership increased, so did Disney video sales!
I really wasn't the fault of the film, just it's timing when released.

Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database
But you can't deny its somewhat mediocre popularity compared to say, "Cinderella" or "Snow White".
You can always place the blame on timing but the fact remains that it underperformed in 1959, 1986 and in rentals.
By the way, lesser animated flicks like "Robin Hood", "The Aristocats" and "The Rescuers" made more money in rentals. Shockingly, yes.
However, as we already know, nowadays it's widely recognized as one of Walt's greatest achievements.

Frankley I rather have Sleeping Beauty and day over the Jungle Book or 101 Dalmations even Snow White I think the only reason that movie is so popular is becasue it was the first Disney movie. but thats just me and my thoughts.rodis wrote:But you can't deny its somewhat mediocre popularity compared to say, "Cinderella" or "Snow White".

Hey, I'm with you. "Sleeping Beauty" is hands down one of the best Disney films ever, and is certainly better than "101 Dalmatians" and "The Jungle Book" in every level. That said, "The Jungle Book" is a favorite of mine as wellDreamerQ18 wrote:Frankley I rather have Sleeping Beauty and day over the Jungle Book or 101 Dalmations even Snow White I think the only reason that movie is so popular is becasue it was the first Disney movie. but thats just me and my thoughts.
As for "Snow White", I find that film to be a bore and I have no idea how come it's more popular than "Sleeping Beauty" or even "Cinderella", but it is.

Hi guys,
SleepingBeauty was new for me, too. Just remembered some pictures from an old Disney-book I had as a kid, but I really like the movie.
I think the "problem" with it is that it's a very artistic movie, not to forget the classical score (they don't even have much dialogue). That's something like in the movie, but I believe it doesn't add to sales ranks positionis...
I don't think, however, that the available 2Disc-DVD is too bad. They say they did some major remastering, but I still found some problems where the pictures seems just old, worn and washed-out (in some areas, like at the end, when the prince bends over and kisses her).
And as you also have the 2Disv version in the states, I don't see why you complain aout SleepingBeauty not having been added to the platinum list. It's not a bad DVD in the end!
bye,
