Your thoughts on.... Aladdin: Special Edition
Your thoughts on.... Aladdin: Special Edition
Sorry I'm a little late guys; I know some of you have already gotten your sets thru the mail. But, better late than never, eh? These trheads seemed to have worked okay so far. Hopefully not too many things were already posted in the Press Releases thread... (Luke, drop me a line if these are wasting too much bandwith)
Post your thoughts on the film, A/V quality, or bonus features of Aladdin: Special Edition.
I must say this truly is one of the most anticipated releases for many this whole year, and as of what I've read, it certainly lives up to that title. I'll be devouring this tomorrow, so I'll come back later and add me comments!

The Film: A (one of Disney's best)
The Visuals: A (didn't notice any defects at all)
The Audio: B (solid, but not enough bass for my taste)
The Extras: A
Luke already covered the extras very well, but I have to chime in and completely agree with his take on them: this is the most satisfying Disney DVD in recent memory.
"A Diamond in the Rough" is an awesome documentary - its so entertaining and educational at the same time. Just sitting back and hearing the cast and crew and watching production footage for 2 hours is almost like spending an evening at the Hyperion theater with them in pereson!
The Alan Menken featurette is interesting and touching. The art review / galleries, while not as substantial as one would hope, are quite nice. This may sound weird, but I was so enthused while watching the ORIGINAL TRAILER for Aladdin! I remember watching that a million times on my Beauty and the Beast Black Diamond VHS - it brought back memories of coolness!
The games are also the best any DVD has had. While they pander to children, hey are fun and interesting even for older players like myself.
Great job, Disney! Keep this up and you'll have won back my respect after that mound of poo you produced called "The Lion King Disc 2".

Film: A
Picture: A
Sound: A-
Extras: A+
The picture looks crisp and clear, with not a trace of defects at all. Colors are very vivid. However, I don't know why, but I feel that it's not worth an A+. As for the sound, yes, bass was not enough, but other than that it's a very good soundtrack in all respects. Dialogue is very crisp.
For the extras... man, I just sat on the sofa for 2 hours watching "Diamond in the Rough"! But I wasn't bored at all - it's such a marvelous making-of documentary! I have yet to explore all the other features but so far I am very happy to give the bonus an A+.

Yes, it shows clips from them. The beginning of the trailer goes something along the likes of, "Three years ago we introduced you to a mermaid that wanted to live on land. Last year we brought you the tale of 'Beauty and the Beast'. Now . . . join us for Aladdin!"rodis wrote:Is the original trailer the one with "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" in it?
Woah. I still remember how much I liked this trailer back in the day. The clips from "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast" add a lot.Jack wrote:Yes, it shows clips from them. But in hebrew they translated it a bit differently
"Tow years ago, Walt Disney Pictures took you to a wondrous journey under the sea, last year we brought you to a magical castle where a beautiful girl fell in love with a monstrous beast. And this year, join us ..."

I've just watched Aladdin for the first time ever, and i have to be honest i feel a little underwhelmed!
On the other hand i thought the bonus features were fantastic! Everything could want was there, much better than last year's Lion King release. but as far as the film is concerned i don't know! Perhaps i just need to watch a few more times!

For me tha quality of the video are great, best of the recent Disney DVds, the audio too, even being and Dolby Digital track, you fell like if was experiencing a DTS track. and the bonus are also great, they are informative and is enjoyable to watch it (is not like the extras of TLK that is not so informative and is boring to watch it.

Ok, I got the Gift Set...
In a word, wao
.
I always wanted to have the best edition for Aladdin. Even tough I thougt the drawings and the senitype were pointless.
Boy was I wrong! Having all these things make you feel like a million bucks and they're really worth it. This is the first thing that I have that I can say was worth every penny and even more.
Of course I'm a fan of the movie and that helps, but still. Now I know how The Lion King's fans felt with theirs.
By the way, as Luke said in other post, I got an e-mail from amazon where they said this set has been selling like hotcakes.

Overall, a nice 2-disc treatment of one of Disney's best animated films. Let's just hope the trend continues with the Bambi and Cinderella PE's, and hopefully with the PE of The Little Mermaid. I must complete my three-film Ashman/Menken Disney collection soon... 2 are already in my hands.

I watched it ... haven't looked at any of the extras or anything. But it's a good DVD. Some other time, for that (looking at the extras, I mean). But the picture and everything, it all looks quite clear, of course. It's a good film. Has some really good moments. I give it three stars (out of four).
However ... I still continue to think, personally, that those Big Four films (this being the third, obviously) are all over-rated. At least ... I don't see to enjoy them nearly as much as others do. I don't know. I think Aladdin is a pleasant film, entertaining, but I just don't connect with it in any emotional way.
My favorite song is still the "Whole New World" sequence. Lovely animation during that. And the Genie gets off some great lines. The film certainly holds up after all this time.

Just watched it, have to admit, I was really looking forward to it and then all my excitement died down once I had it in my hands, and then I wasn't sure if I even wanted to see it tonight or wait a while to see it. Then I opened the giftset and was looking at the character scketches and the cell, and I started to get excited, and I started flipping through the book and getting more excited, 20 minutes later I was on the couch watching the movie!
The music videos were a bit of a let down, but I think that had to do more with the production than artists in some cases, I didn't like Clay Aiken singing Proud of Your Boy at all!
The movie was awesome!!! The picture was a million time better than before, and I didn't notice any problems with the sound, and my stereo is picking up some weird interferance, but I didn't notice it through out most of the movie.
"Diamond in the Rough" was an amazing bonus feature, and I enjoyed a couple of the visual galleries.
The only think I wish they had touched on more was the original original Aladdin, in which he had 3 best friends (Omar, Babkak, and Kasseem) and there were 2 Genies, and Jasmine was a spoiled brat!
But all in all, this was a stellar DVD and I am so glad I got the gift set!

Defy Gravity
Video: 10/10 - The colours just stand out so boldly, but not so much it starts getting pyschedlic. Everything seems so sharp and clear! The 2D looks so fabulous so much so that the 3D doesn't always seem to stick out too much.
Audio: 10/10 - The Dolby mix, overall, was much more "standard" and better if viewed as which was more true to theatrical presentation. The DEHT Mix was jsut outstanding! The difference between the two are like night and day! Sound has much more "punch" and "realism", and the voices aren't so stuck on the center speaker; the DEHT mix just seems to use the speakers for full dynamic range compared to Dolby.
Extras: 10/10 - This DVD is truly complete! Deleted Songs, Scenes; Full 2-hour Doc; featurettes; galleries; commentaries; games (
). It's jsut packed! This should be the new standard for Disney releases. I would've preferred the doc to be something more along the lines of Empire of Dreams, than this piece/featurette doc.
This is a wonderful DVD all around and should be a must for any DVD buff's collection. (Not to mention animation and Disney fans) It is the benchmark for the Platinums. What more can I say, but that after seeing this, I'm anticipating Mulan and Mary Poppins with even more enthusiasm, and have high hopes for Bambi and Cinderella.

I'm so hyped for this. My copy comes in the mail in a couple days from Amazon.com. I'm really looking forward to the documentaries, Lion King was a bit of a let down for me as it seemed a little too self-promotional and nothing was included of the voice cast.
One of the more surperb documentary extra I've seen recently (not counting any of the LOTR ones, those own all documentaries) was the Star Wars one "Empire of Dreams" very insightful for 2.5 hours and almost no self-promotion.

It's beautiful. *sigh*
I've only watched the first disc. Huge Aladdin fan, big Clay fan...it's heaven:). Not my favorite Clay performance but I think he did a lovely rendition of the song and I got all weepy seeing Menken all weepy.
Couldn't watch Jess/Nick though:(.
Looking forward to trying the games.

Re: Your thoughts on.... Aladdin: Special Edition
I was a little dispaointed in the "Disney 5.1 Theater Sound" thingy they created. After the excellent job Disney did with this mix on "The Lion King," I must admitt that the mix on "Aladdin" falls just a tad bit short of my expectations. Otherwise though I'm happy with the DVD. While watching the movie though I kept thinking "Darn, I REALLY wanted to see this on the IMAX!" DARN YOU DISNEY!!!
Oh well, great DVD, can't wait to see how the "Bambi" DVD turns out.
