Musicals: the discussion

Post by Wonderlicious »

I must admit I do generally like this type of genre; although there are a good number of musicals I'm not to keen on. I personally found West Side Story, Meet me in St Louis, Pete's Dragon and Carousel to be quite dull. Some I didn't like due to the story (Grease, for example, left me cold). Anyway, here's my personal favourite musical list! Enjoy!
  • 1. The Wizard of Oz
    2. Oliver!
    3. The School of Rock
    4. Chicago
    5. The Sound of Music
    6. My Fair Lady
    7. Mary Poppins
    8. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
And for stage ones...
  • Jesus Christ Superstar
    Les Miserables

My favourites are few and far between:

1) Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. For years I've tortured my parents into waching this at Xmas. When I moved they bought it for me on dvd so I'd never miss it during the festive season!

2) Calamity Jane. I just love old movies like this and think Doris Day is fab!

3) Mary Poppins. Need I say more!

I love musicals, and half of the movies I own are that. As long as it has music through-out the whole thing, I can watch it over and over. It can't be only one or two songs, or the whole thing is in song LOL.
I like Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon, Sound of Music, West Side Story, Grease, Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, My Fair Lady, etc, etc.
Never judge things by their appearence; even carpet bags. I'm sure I never do.

I love movie musicals. I'm glad the success of Moulin Rouge and Chicago has fueled a new era of movie musicals (Phantom of the Opera and Rent are coming soon, and I think Universal has bought the rights to Wicked). My favorites are (not including animation, of course):

1. The Wizard of Oz
2. Chicago
3. Singin' in the Rain
4. Jesus Christ Superstar
5. Grease
6. Bedknobs and Broomsticks
7. Mary Poppins
8. Moulin Rouge
9. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
10. The Sound of Music

I'm starting to get into musicals: I just saw Chicago this week, and I loved it!

I can't wait for the Phantom and Producers movies: I've seen neither shows, nor their other films, and haven't heard any songs from either. As for Wicked, well, most people know by now that I'm completely obsessed with it-if there's a film, it had better have Kristin Chenoweth, and Idina Menzel.

Most of my favorite musicals are Disney's animated ones. There's very few outside of those that I really like, because most of them are overlong with the music being a mixed bag.

The two I hold in high regard are West Side Story and Singin' in the Rain. They don't really wear out their welcome when it comes to run time, and the music is consistently excellent.

Well I love old Hollywood musicals (Technicolor Cinemascope and glorious Stereophonic sound? :P) with Gene Kelly Fred Astaire Cid Charisse Leslie Caron etc etc etc

One favorite of mine that hasn't been realeased on DVD (i think) is Daddy Long Legs. I have it on 2.55 wide Laserdisc :P

But i lurve most of them, ancient and modern disney and non disney old fashioned or crazy weird (like phantom of the paradise hahaha)

If you love old musicals and hollywood style movies I recomend picking up the coming soon MGM That's Entertainment box set which for the price I think it's a steal (i have the 4 delux laserdiscs which cost me hundreds :P) it's like having highlights of hundreds of movies :P (don't know the exact specs contents but the laserdiscs had lots of outtakes and musical numbers cut from the original movies for "reasons of length and pace" :D

And i second Prince Adam, i want my Wicked -ness
