I was finally reading Ashmans full original 1988 treatment for his Aladdin and wow. Of course i knew of some overall differences like the "making his mom proud" storyline or that jasmine was a spoiled brat, but it was definetly different than i though! I didn't expect the crush Aladdin had on Jasmine to be extremely reduced and almost non existent here or Jasmine being a fully comedic sidekick through her arrogance, which was quite funny (like that scene wherw Jafar makes her scrub the floor and shes like "dadee give him the kingdom already this is inhuman torture" and then the voiceover saying the Sultan knows when hes defeated lol). same with overall emotional stakes, like the genies were mostly just comic relief and they had no real relationship or conflict with Aladdin, where the wish for hranting the Genie felt more Luke an "ok why not" situation than an emotional act of friendship like in the final film. I love Ashman but i gotta say the final one feels so much more theatrical and emotional despite its sharp comedy. Also Aladdins friend group didnt really serve the plot besides freeing him from prison so it was good to just reduce them into Abu, its not like they had destinctive personalities either. But in his defense this was literally his first outline for Aladdin while working on Little Mermaid so i know it would be way better if he had more time focusing on that. Still interesting to see what could have been. :milkbuds:

I'll always be curious to know what Howard Ashman would have thought of the retooled version of Aladdin. The finished product is 10 star work for me, but it's so vastly different from his original vision. Like Jasmine alone does a complete 180. I'm wondering how he would have taken the deviation, or even if it might have caused some bad blood between him and Disney.
