Oscar for Best Original Song 2020—Present

The Wild Robot had a song?? If it did then I don't remember it whatsoever (but I've only seen the film once and not sure I'll see again). Sometimes they give the nominations based on the success of a movie and not necessarily separate the song from the movie and judge it on its own merits.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Netflix cared about Spellbound that much.

The Wild Robot doesn't have one but two songs, both performed by Maren Morris, although "Kiss the Sky" is the only one submitted for awards consideration. Maybe they play over the end credits or some montage or something and they aren't too noticeable. It's true that being in a successful film gives it more attention. And yes, promotion is an important factor as well.

"Beautiful That Way," the Miley Cyrus song that was nominated for the Golden Globe, has just been released. It's from the film The Last Showgirl starring Pamela Anderson and one of its songwriters already won the Oscar for "Shallow" and was nominated for "I'm Just Ken."

By the way, none of the songs from Moana 2 or Mufasa ended up being nominated. We'll see if they have better luck at the Critics' Choice on Thursday.

It's the same nominees as at the Golden Globes except one. The Astra Awards also had almost the same nominees. So far Moana 2 is doing worse than Wish, as "This Wish" was at least nominated by both critics associations last year. It's also curious that two former Disney Channel stars, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, are both competing in the category this year, both here and at the Globes.

It's interesting that both Moana 2 and Mufasa made the cut in the song category given they haven't received much recognition this award season. It's also noteworthy that Diane Warren, Elton John, Robbie Williams, and Pharell Williams all made the cut, but Ed Sheeran did not.

Inside Out 2 made the cut in the score category. Unsurprisingly, the Academy broke their own rules again by shortlisting Emilia Pérez and Wicked for Best Score despite both of them being musicals.

It's interesting that both Moana 2 and Mufasa made the cut in the song category given they haven't received much recognition this award season.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if they would make it. Well, I'm happy for Barlow and Bear because the Moana 2 songs have been quite criticized by critics, which I thought was a bit unfair, especially since they were hired to work on a TV series and for that the songs are more than OK. Plus, in my opinion, the quality of the songs was higher than the quality of the film overall. Regarding Mufasa, I preferred "I Always Wanted a Brother" over "Tell Me It's You." Though the latter has nice lyrics, I don't find the melody too catchy, but it turns out they were right to submit it.

As for the rest, apart from the Miley Cyrus song, I think there haven't been any big snubs. I was hoping Alan Menken would at least make the shortlist (he did it for "Speechless" and "A Place Called Slaughter Race" after all, so it wasn't impossible), but I know it was difficult since the film didn't get much attention or good reviews. I personally quite liked it, but I have a soft spot for films with fantasy elements, plus of course, Menken's music makes me like it more as well. Though, it's not one of his best works, the soundtrack is still really good, in my opinion, especially the score.

The Oscar nominations are out. No Moana 2 or Mufasa. The Wild Robot got nominated for Score, but not for Song. Diane Warren and Elton John each garnered yet another nomination. Stephen Schwartz got nominated for Best Score for Wicked even though scores from musicals are technically ineligible. This is Schwartz's first Oscar nomination since Enchanted and 9th overall.
