Let's hope Disney actually listens this time around since they did with The Lion King's missing cloud but then again that was quite a minor issue compared to a whole new restoration.

Yeah. They also fixed Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. But yeah, they weren't whole new restorations.

For those still mad and wanting to learn more about how Disney can do proper restorations and be incredibly accurate to what was initially released, check out Disney Insider episode 4 on Disney+. They recreate a Cinderella cel paint using their current Ink & Paint dept on that episode, using the formulas that were written down when they were making the film to get the exact same colors.

But aren't the restorations done on the computer? Is there a way to scan in the actual color created in the lab to do a restoration?

I'm confused as to how reproducing a cell correctly shows they could restore the films digitally correctly as well.

Well... DisneyDuster.... technically, they could compare the digitized version of the film (viewed on a specially calibrated monitor) to the paints as they show on the cel and adjust the digital version to match that. I think that's what Rodrigo_Ca is trying to say.

But here is why it WOULDN'T work. When the color tests for those films were done during pre-production, they were photographed under the camera and then developed the film stock, to see how they would look on actual film. So the intended colors were what they would look like on the projected screen, not on the cel itself.

Plus, depending on lighting effects, lenses and film stock, that would affect the color result as well. In the Snow White bonus features, there are some light and color tests... and you can see how the exposure affected the colors pretty drastically on film.

Oh, ok, then thanks for the suggestion rodrigo_ca, but as Marce82 said, they'd need to do more than that to make sure the colors and details are right!

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a scan of the laserdisc version of the movie? Didn't filmmusic say they had one a long time ago?

Hello all, I finally got all the versions of Cinderella on home video.

Image

The 1988 Walt Disney Classics VHS.
The 1988 Walt Disney Classics Laserdisc.
The 1995 Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection VHS.
The 1995 Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection Laserdisc.
The 2012 Walt Disney Diamond Edition Blu-Ray.*
The 2023 Walt Disney Ultimate Collector's 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray.

*The 2012 Walt Disney Diamond Edition Blu-Ray. uses the exact same transfer as The 2005 Walt Disney Platinum Edition DVD, so, in conversation with Disney Duster, I will only use the caps from the HD Diamond Edition.

You can see a few more examples here:

I'm not even close to being done, but I do need help from all of you wonderful Cinderella fans. There was a great collage once, of pics from the 2005 Platinum Edition DVD, where a lot of mistakes/errors were shown, but I can't find it anymore. Does any of you remember the image? :?:

I can't login to Facebook or Fanpop right now, and I have to be at home on my computer to find the image of the 2005 errors, but I think I can find it this weekend, if it was the one that was a long vertical bunch of screencaps?

The frame you used for your post is my FAVORITE image from the film because it is right in the middle of her transforming! When the Disney dust lines cross over her head and there is still a good amount of pink in her dress.

Your comparisons are the best, and I am glad to see the newest restoration is the best.

Yes, thank you SO much for this collage of images! It was just that one I was looking for. :D I'll be working hard on this, this weekend. And thank you, Disney Duster, for the kind words. I'm sorry it took so long, but it's finally here. :) And you're right, the 4K version is the best version, I'm so happy we finally got such a beautiful version of the movie!
