Re: The new Princesses being excluded from the lineup
Eric's castle couldn't be in Denmark. The Mediterranean Sea is far away from this country. Denmark is surrounded by the Baltic Sea and the North Sea so Ariel should be from one of these seas. Honestly I think that the people who made this book didn't know much about geography and He/she wrote the first name that came into his/her mind. The Mediterranean Sea Is also more popular than the baltic or the North Sea.

Re: The new Princesses being excluded from the lineup
On The Disney Princess book it says that the filmmakers decided to change the location to the Mediterranean Sea:
The Disney artists moved the story from the frigid Baltic of Andersen's native Denmark to a warmer, sunnier that suggested the Mediterranean, probably off the coast of southern Italy. Elements in the costumes and building suggest an equally vague time in the late seventeenth or eighteenth century. Musker says, "Rowland Wilson- he's a great draftsman-designed the Prince's palace. He did a drawing that we loved that combined these Mediterranean elements, making it a palace unlike any other Disney fairy tale palace, with the whitewashed stucco. He was really going for a warm southern Mediterranean feel that he thought would be attractive to a mermaid who'd been stuck all her in life in the cold ocean."

Didn't know that! Thanks for the info! Thinking about it it has sense, Carlotta is a common name in Italy. The castle however doesn't remind me to Italy at all.Farerb wrote: โWed Sep 17, 2025 7:11 am On The Disney Princess book it says that the filmmakers decided to change the location to the Mediterranean Sea:

I remember reading an article that said the inspiration was Dubrovnik:

However, I haven't seen any confirmation.

I ashamedly was stupid and thought Maldonia was North American. I did not get New Orleans was there. Sorry, Tiana!
Well I don't know about that other stuff myself, Divinity, but I didn't notice the dancing figure in Ariel's hand. That is a good clipart!
Patch, oh, well the thing is Eric's kingdom was meant to look Meditteranean as the filmmakers said. I don't think they meant a more specific place, and I really don't know where people are getting Denmark from other than the fairy tale is from there. The wooden shoes mean squat when both Snow White and Cinderella wore them as well.

Eric's kingdom remind of the Adriatic sea a bit. Then there is also the french influences in the movie spread out with some germanic creative choices in the village. The coast of Italy is a high contender especially since Andersen traveled to Italy before writing the fairy tale. Definitely a Mediterranean feel overall, even the red crab reminds of longipes found in the south of Europe.

I also love the image for Rapunzel. I've always been sort of iffy about hand-drawn art for 3D characters (really only ever works with Anna and Elsa since that film actually managed to get down pat with those two the same sort of fragile female figures that hand-drawn did so well), but it does translate Rapunzel very well there. I wonder if they all could be from those "The Story of" books.Disney Duster wrote: โWed Sep 17, 2025 10:49 pm Well I don't know about that other stuff myself, Divinity, but I didn't notice the dancing figure in Ariel's hand. Smart choice to make Eric's kingdom a "warm" locale opposite the "cold" under sea world, which ties into the best line of POYW with her touching the flame in the portrait of Mary Magdalene and wondering what it must feel like. Reading it put that specific way makes me wonder if that might've gave way to the whole color dynamic in Beauty in the Beast of the blue / cold / solitude versus gold / warmth / love. I wouldn't have guessed that before since M&C didn't make B&tB, but I suppose the crossover of other talent between the films (Ashman, animators, etc.) could've contributed to it. Of course, I think it's done a little better in B&tB because TLM has always felt more colorful and powerful (Oz-like) in the underwater scenes and more boring in the land scenes. Whereas in B&tB, the moment where gold is used--the ballroom, chandelier, mural on the ceiling, Belle's dress--is the most gorgeous and stunning in the film with the best moment of animation and song in the film as well.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ "Elizabeth Taylor"
Katy Perry ~ "bandaid"
Meghan Trainor ~ "Still Don't Care"

I like the Rapunzel clipart as well. I don't think the clipart matches the "Story of" books, myself.
I like the warmth Ariel is attracted to from the cold sea as well. POYW is in a cold-looking grotto scene. I'd say only Under the Sea is warm. The "What's a fire?" thing does indeed tie into the warm v. cold. I always thought the best line was "Bright young women, sick of swimmin, ready to stand" myself, but that's my opinion.
You are so right that the warmth of gold of BatB is a great visual for the change in story.

Exactly likePatchofBlue wrote: โWed Sep 17, 2025 2:06 am I meant like a specific country. I know a lot of people will type The Little Mermaid as taking place in Denmark, which is why it was curious to me that they didn't just say "Denmark" when some of the other princesses listed had actual countries that weren't named in the films. (BTW that was a helpful outline of the German connections, Thumper.) Though I guess ... even if we DO decide that Eric's kingdom is in Denmark, then I suppose it would actually still be more accurate to say Ariel herself is from the Mediterranean Sea, so maybe it doesn't matter.
this looks really pretty. Wouldnt mind if this was also partly an Inspiration for Rapunzels kingdom. Vaguely

The toddler dolls for Moana are now under the Moana 2 label instead of the Disney Princess one. I wonder if, now that Moana has turned into a big franchise, the character will be phased out of the line.

Observations:
โข Pocahontas is absent
โข Anna & Elsa are present even though they are not officially part of the Disney Princess franchise
โข Anna & Elsa have their end-of-movie sequel outfits
โข Moana has her sequel outfit
โข Mulan has her end-of-movie outfit
โข Cinderella, Aurora, and Belle have their peasant outfits
โข Rapunzel is in the same pose as the maiden in Fragonard's painting The Swing
โข Jasmine has an original outfit that resembles her parks costume

I don't like Jasmine and Ariel's made up outfits in the mural, and proportions look off on a lot of the princesses but I do still like the mural overall.

Big YES for Rapunzel Unbraideds impact!
I agree with Jasmine here. Looks like she wears some weird overlayered pale bodice which is so out of character, makes sense since shes not in hot Agrabah but the random pale color choice clashes with the rest of her outfit, but Ariels outfit seems niceDisney Duster wrote: โTue Nov 25, 2025 10:45 pm I don't like Jasmine and Ariel's made up outfits in the mural, and proportions look off on a lot of the princesses but I do still like the mural overall.

I really dislike Arielโs portrait. Her face appears to be off model, I donโt care for her new dress, and the background is very confusing. It appears sheโs underwater but sheโs depicted as a human!

Re: The new Princesses being excluded from the lineup
Maybe Pocahontas is not in the mural because she's the only Princess who is not in DLP parks. She only appears during the Princess week (this year she appeared like 2 days with huge queues of guests to take a photo with her). On the other hand I can't understand why she was not included when in the nighttime show she has her own scene and she also has a painting on the Disneyland hotel.
I like Jasmine's new outfit. She looks like the parks version and it has sense to portrait her like that. The idea of making Belle, Cinderella and Aurora in her peasant gowns is good in my opinion. These costumes have more sense on a forest than a ballgown. They should have made the same with Tiana because she doesn't look all right in her signature gown surrounded by the other princesses in their most comfortable gowns.
Ariel doesn't have any sense with this new dress. I never liked the green one but this one is not better. They should have used the blue one. It's simple and it fix with the rest of princesses with peasant gown.
Merida is all right. I understand her presence in the mural because she has more presence on the park right now.
What I think is that they should make new outfits exclusively for this restaurant. DLP already has 2 restaurants where you can have a meal with the princesses. Auberge de Cendrillon has the Princesses in their classic outfits that you can see in the meet and greets and Le Table de Lumiere has Belle and the other princesses in their exclusive outfits from this hotel so this new restaurant should have something special to make it different from the other one. New costumes or exclusives princesses would be the ideal things.
