The other version sounds interesting enough in concept that I can't really say for sure which iteration I prefer without seeing it execution.

I'm inclined to favor the finished film where the focus is more on the aliens than the clone simply because THE ALIENS are the thing we are here to see. I also think it makes more sense that Elio would be the one who believes in aliens, not his aunt/mother because they're just a thing that kids would be more willing to entertain, but I'm also kinda curious to see how they would pull off a scenario where the adult is the one who starts out believing in the supernatural and it's the kid who needs convincing.

Anyways, it does seem like I am the only one, at least on this forum, who genuinely loved this movie. Ah, well. I really liked what I saw, and it'll no doubt make regular rotations on my Disney+ viewing.

The fallout with Molina is sad, yes, though I also think that some commentators are having a little too much fun with its failure and trying to leverage it for unrelated purposes. The queer subtext really sounds like SUB-text, not anything more or less than we hadn't already seen from Disney, so there's a cap to how much energy I can expend being upset over it.

The intergalactic tale has grossed just $63 million in North America and finally surpassed the $100 million mark globally after a month of release. With $117 million in worldwide ticket sales, the $150 million-budgeted tentpole will end its theatrical run as a major money loser for Disney and Pixar.

Disney isn’t hurting too much because “Lilo & Stitch” is imminently joining the billion-dollar club. The live-action remake has grossed $414.6 million in North America and $994 million globally after eight weeks of release. Since “Lilo & Stitch” is practically minting money for the studio (box office returns are nothing compared to Stitch-related consumer product sales), it’s no surprise a live-action sequel is already in the works.

Transformers One also flopped too recently. In past like 20ish years movies like Star Wars The Clone Wars, Space Chimps, Mars Needs Mom, either underperformed or straight up bombed (Mars). Might be missing others.

Titan AE, Atlantis, Treasure Planet are SADLY the movies that killed 2D. Shows that issue wasn't really 2D but that they were going more and more ambitious with the 2D movies and more serious stories and in a genre of movies that isn't that popular...

people want to blame marketing but reality, families+kids in general seem to have no real interest in such movies. These Type of movies aren't even popular in Live Action Either, outside of Avatar, Star Wars, Guardians and that is basically it. Alien is basically more horror/thriller franchise. Ones like Star Trek and Riddick are more niche type. And like majority of other attempts seem to fail in live action too.

They seem to prefer Tales of the past that are set on Earth, Modern Day settings or just straight up animal movies. Hard Scifi movies are harder to sell and the alien designs of Elio leave a LOT to be desired, look pretty ugly never mind the ugly bean mouth issue from recent Pixar movies that doesn't really appeal either. Personally think the only well done movies in this genre were the 3/3 2D whether designs or look but too ambitious and not enough in there for mass appeal aka niche.

I can't imagine Disney greenlighting more such films when all of them were Disney minus Transformers too or eventually owned by Disney like Star Wars TCW and Titan AE.

the only success story seems to be Wall-E. Just from this post, that's like 1/11 movies succeeded well, those are very poor rates. That likely has to do with it being kid friendly with cute design and tied to Earth setting too. It had something for everyone, Wall-E was also produced during Pixar's Golden Years from Toy Story-Toy Story 3 where they had a great run of hit movies and a lot less competition from other studios too. Whereas Elio is coming off from a failed run of movies minus Inside Out 2.

I actually saw the movie today and frankly I must say that I liked it. It was cute and endearing, despite how it`s not the best movie that Pixar`s ever done. What struck me with it`s premise how it was strikingly similar to Lilo & Stitch: A young kid with a strange passion who becomes an orphan and is raised by a relative who becomes his guardian. And gets involved with creatures from Space. Frankly, Elio himself came across as a brat at the beginning, just like Lilo. The beginning was executed well with the setup. My issue with the movie was how the middle section of the film dragged a bit. The ending was also satisfying, as Elio chose to stay with Olga. But otherwise, the film was cute enough, but not particularly memorable or outstanding.

I still feel like this 3 month window is too early to be putting on Disney+. I think this movie especially would have benefitted from more space. People still remember it as "Pixar's Flop." The public kinda needs to forget about it before they can "rediscover it."
