Source: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2025/ ... now-white/At the time, Rachel Zegler, Snow White’s leading lady, was drawing criticism from some quarters for comments she had made about Palestine, while the decision to have computer-generated dwarfs in an otherwise human cast had gone down badly with just about everyone. “How you deal with all this stuff, it’s as tricky as hell,” says Menken, who is in two minds about the whole idea of updating the classics, although he is sympathetic towards Zegler. “She’s just a kid. Yes, she said ‘Free Palestine’. It’s the kind of thing any of us might have said. We all want people to be free. Although, of course, there are also the nuances of history.” “But when it comes to the dwarfs…” He pauses, takes a breath. “I’m sorry, but the dwarfs are what Snow White is all about!”

Alan Menken has come to Zegler's defense. It's to be expected given he worked with her on Skydance Animation's Spellbound.

Why was he even asked about Snow White? He had nothing to do with it.

It’s a British paper, and the Brits are running a lot of stories right now on Zegler because she’s starring in a high profile West End revival of Evita. Because Zegler’s name means clicks, and Menken has a professional connection to her, and of course, to Disney.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I'm not surprised. Menken is a nice person and it's not like the woman is evil or something. I feel sorry for (almost) any celebrity who gets bombed en mass by X users and so on, no doubt it can't help but be unsettling even if you ignore it. That said, I wish she hadn't been distant and cold with Gadot, that's the only thing I'd criticize her for. Personally, I don't know that much about her views except that she likely leans into the AOC / Bernie direction, but to me she has a right to her views. It's her personality and delivery that often rubbed me wrong more than the other stuff, not really her views (some of which I expect I might even agree with). That said, she is a serviceable actress with a beautiful voice. Re-watching Snow White a week ago, I still feel the same I did from when seeing it in theaters that they were trying to thread the needle of so many things with the SW character that it would be hard for just a decent actress to pull it off fully. I'm not surprised, since I didn't think she was able to fully pull off the last scenes of WSS either. But she was alright, I just thought SW would be more timid and trembling in that first scene with the Queen., sort of have an inherent horror of the dark spirit the Queen has.
My only major disappointment with the film is that SDMPWC and especially I'm Wishing/One Song aren't included in some form. I still feel in particular that if they'd had her singing it in the background as Jonathan flees the dungeon to find her, that would have just been perfect; and there wouldn't have been anything "bad" with the song considering they'd already had a love song and kiss prior to that scene, plus the movie had "Waiting On a Wish" and the song she sings as she's walking to the castle gates to counterbalance it. The opening is on the weak side, but I understand it was necessary for the ending. SW's hair does look noticeably better in some shots versus others; I think there had been something posted here about re-shoots, I guess that may be the reason. This version has my favorite take on the peddler woman disguise and I like the way the Queen smashes the mirror here being her death, too, as well as the "defeat" of the Queen that happens in the public eye. The "All Is Fair (reprise)" scene was better than I remembered. At least, I thought it went way too fast when I first saw this, I like it more now I've had a chance to see it again.
I might go buy the steelbook later today since it finally released. I wish it wasn't so high, I feel like it should only be around $35, that's what steelbooks in the past were, I thought? And I'll get the standard version, too, since I might try to combine the slip cover with the steelbook. Maybe it won't fit though, IDK.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I read something about her possibly playing Maria in a Sound of Music remake. I can see it. She seems sort of typecast in all those roles from that old era (Snow White / WSS / SoM), but I'd rather see her in that than more modern things like the film with Zachary Levi. But she feels a bit young for Maria in TSoM.

OMG! Even though this is for a Lincoln Center stage production, has no one learned their lesson about this nasty creature???
Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
She's too young to play Maria, she's more suited to play Liesl. A 24 year old will have a 16 year old stepdaughter. How old will Georg von Trapp be?

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
The hair constantly changes during all the films. In some scenes it looks more curly, in others is straight. Sometimes is darker, other times she has one hairstyle and 10 seconds later she has a completely diferente one. I don't know how they made so huge mistakes like these. It's really evident when the dwarfs are making jokes about dopey and she goes outside to talk with him. Just before whistle while you work or in the kiss scene.
Inside of the house her hair is not perfectly stylized

10 seconds later:

Here it has another color and texture

20 seconds later it changes again...

Here she has another hairstyle with less volume on the roots:
This one is my favorite:

Before biting the apple:

After the true love kiss and the awakening scene

This girl has a hair that is more magical than Rapunzel's...
and some seconds later it has lost some shape again

It's much shorter when she arrives to the kingdom...

I don't understand how a professional team didn't realize about these changes...I could understand it if the changes were in different scenes but sometimes the mistakes are in the same scene with a few seconds of difference...They used lots of wigs and I'm sure that they didn't have a reference one. It's not only about the hairstyle is about the length and even the color!

Jokes aside, the lack of consistency was more than distracting.
Lazy people assume Snow had a cheek length bob, like in 2025. Completely ignoring that her curls were bouncy and had volume. When wet, it wasn't cheek length, but shoulder length. When they cut her hair like in 2025, they killed their freedom for the lively volume.
Why didn't they just stay true to the 30s style updo with finger waves? Or at least like how she was promoting. She looked iconic with this style here.

This hair length was definitely longer than the others, but only for a short while.
Same deleted scene below
As much as it's distracting, it's kind of entertaining how they couldn't make up their mind.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I made a TikTok video when the first picture of her as SW came out and I said the same thing that you are saying. To make SW hairstyle you need more length because her hair is not so short. She has a waves hairstyle and you need more length to make the waves. They tried to improve it in some scenes but the result is not good and it gives an inconsistent feeling. The makeup is also inconsistent.

Speaking of the costume color. I don't mind the sky blue tint they went with, but this color palette from TikTok would have really shined on Snow. Feels both traditional and modern. And the gold feels fresh compared to the unfortunate clown yellow. Had they just changed the yellow in the final look, it would look less awkward with the blue.Thumper_93 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 25, 2025 2:10 am I made a TikTok video when the first picture of her as SW came out and I said the same thing that you are saying. The real Maria was 21 when she became a governess, and 22 when she married the Captain. The oldest von Trapp child, a son, was 16 years old when his father married he and his siblings' governess. If you really listen to the lyrics in the song Maria, the nuns are describing someone who is anywhere from 18-25.

They can make her look older with a good characterization, that's not a problem. The problem that I see with her is that she doesn't look like Maria at all.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
Gal Gadot participated in Israel's "The A Talk". If people aren't familiar with it, The A Talk is a show where a celebrity is interviewed by a group of people on the spectrum.
She was asked about Snow White and here is a translation of what was said:
Woman (holding microphone): "Like we mentioned before, the movie 'Snow White' was a huge flop. This whole movie can only be accompanied by this sound effect. But, but in the beginning, surely when you heard the pitch and received the offer, you didn't think it would be a flop. But when everything developed and so on, how did you feel? Were you disappointed? Did you cry? Were you angry?"
Gal Gadot: "I have to tell you, first of all, I really enjoyed filming this movie. Really. I enjoyed it"
Woman: "For sure when it wasn't with Rachel Zegler."
Gal Gadot: "I even enjoyed working with Rachel Zegler. And we laughed and we talked and it was fun. I was sure that this movie was going to be a huge success. And then October 7 happened. And what happens is that, and you know, and it happens very, very much in all kinds of industries and also in Hollywood, a lot of pressure is exerted on celebrities, on actors, on creators, to post against Israel. And, you know, it happened. And even though, you know, there's no, I can always explain and try to give context to people in the world about what's happening and what the reality is here. And I always do that. But in the end, people decide for themselves. And I was disappointed that the movie was very affected by that. And it didn't succeed at the box office. But it is what it is. You win some, you lose some."

Personally I don't think this specific subject affected the movie as much as Rachel posting against Republicans and pissing off Disney adults, the mess with the dwarves, and the movie not really being that good, not even on par with the remakes standards.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
That's useful information. Thanks for collecting that.
I'm of a similar opinion--I REALLY don't think that the Israel conflict had much to do with this movie's failure. The writing was already on the wall with just how aggressively they had alienated their fanbase.
I'd even go as far as saying that Zegler calling out Trump voters really only angered people who were already boycotting the movie for her being Latina in a traditionally white role.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
The movie didn't fail because Israel. The movie flopped because the cast was controversial and because of the changes that they told they were going to introduce. People wanted an accurate story and cast and they didn't get either. With Ariel they were more lucky because she has a huge fandom behind her with 0 criterion but the situation is different for SW.
Of course the whole Israel situation was controversial but the movie was really damaged by then.
