Pixar's Elio Footage Reaction: Amblin And Galaxy Quest Combine For A Delightful Sci-Fi Adventure

I only skimmed over the description of the actual footage screened, I don't usually like to know the details ahead of time, but there's some good stuff here.

Though the relationship between Olga and Elio will also pull at some heartstrings, in a movie about loneliness and the difficulty of belonging, it's young Elio and his space slug friend Glordon who seem like they'll really make the movie soar. Once Elio and Glordon meet, they cavort all over the Communiverse, drinking glorp, riding down a bathroom waterfall, and just being a couple of normal kids who happen to be from completely different species. It has the heart of Amblin Entertainment movies like "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," with a little bit of "The Goonies" and maybe some "Men in Black" on top of the "Galaxy Quest"-esque story. Helping that vibe along is a lively, 1980s-style, synth-kissed score from Rob Simonsen (composer for "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and "Deadpool & Wolverine").

The real heavy lifting comes from voice actors Yonas Kibreab and Remy Edgerly. As Elio, Kibreab brings a delightful sense of wonder but also a heartbreaking vulnerability that you can't help but love. Meanwhile, as Glordon, Edgerly has one of the most adorable voices I've ever heard for a child character. Glordon has the cuteness of a character like Boo or Baby Dory but in a slightly older kid who just wants to be a kid. He's a squishy slug who bounces around gleefully, lifts up Elio's spirits, and has an infectious, undeniable adorable laugh. Audiences are going to love him, and I can't wait to see how the bond between Elio and Glordon pans out in the movie.

As director Domee Shi said about "Elio" during the presentation at Pixar, "We hope it resonates for those facing loneliness, just as 'Inside Out 2' did for those coping with anxiety."

Everyone complains that Disney these days only does sequels and live action remakes and demands original films, but when Disney does give them those, the people don’t even bother to come see them.

People say they want originality, but they’re wired to favor the familiar.

And see, it wasn't that long ago that a non-franchise title from Disney or Pixar could still reliably draw box office returns, if not in the range of a billion.

But Disney really dug themselves in a hole when they carved out a specific destination for audiences to catch all their films away from theaters. And for good measure, they conditioned audiences to just expect them to be uploaded to streaming a whole thirty days after the fact. Existing franchises can still earn priority from audiences, but Disney's in a real pickle trying to plant new properties for future outings.

Their best long-term investment is to work to undo that programming by keeping their movies off digital--or at least off Disney+--for a reasonable amount of time. When Disney+ first dropped, there was something like a seven-month gap between a movie's theatrical premiere and its Disney+ premiere, and I honestly think that was a solid business model. But after the streaming wars started heating up, everyone tried getting ahead by giving their service all the best toys, leaving theaters starving.

I honestly think it's possible to retrain audiences, but it will take consistent effort across multiple movies ...

Well, my thoughts about the final trailer: I liked the parts at the beginning with Elio waving and the kids playing rugby. The little alien who welcomes Elio to the ship reminded me of the similar creatures of Soul. The universal users manual was fun. The red creature who says "leader of Earth" looks like a manta. The spaceships at the end looked traditional, though.

I love the idea of bringing those back, however, I'll be honest, this didnt make me laugh at all. I wonder if its because there wasn't any real bloopers by the voice actors being used here? I don't even know if the old ones featured real bloopers, but I certainly got the sense that they mixed real with fake takes.
