Memorial Day Box Office Record Breaker! ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Debuts to Massive $183 Million, ‘Mission: Impossible’ Scores Series-Best $77 Million
https://variety.com/2025/film/box-offic ... 236409718/
Families turned out in force for Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake, which collected a blockbuster $145.5 million in its opening weekend and an estimated $183 million through Monday. Those ticket sales defied projections and cemented a Memorial Day opening weekend record, overtaking a different Cruise tentpole, 2022’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” with $126 million over the weekend and $160 million through the four days. “Lilo & Stitch” also secured the second-largest start across any four-day holiday weekend, behind only 2018’s “Black Panther,” which amassed $242 million over Presidents’ Day.
“Lilo & Stitch” ranks as one of the top debuts for Disney’s live-action remakes, just behind 2019’s “The Lion King” ($191 million over three days) and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” ($174 million over three days). It’s an encouraging reversal for Disney after March’s “Snow White” remake had flatlined with $204 million globally against a $250 million budget. That’s right — “Lilo & Stitch” earned more in four days than “Snow White” did during its entire box office run. It helps that “Lilo & Stitch” was embraced by moviegoers with an “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls.

Just watched it. Had a great time. Chris Sanders is and will always be the MVP of any Stitch project. Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong were great, too. When I read the spoiler that Nani in this version gives up her guardianship rights to Lilo, that immediately felt wrong but actually I thought it was smartly and sensitively handled in the remake— so kudos to the team for pulling that off. The other supporting actors did well, but I want to shout out Billy Magnussen— I had reservations, but I enjoyed his Pleakley a lot. And what can I say, he was great eye candy, too.

The only major disappointment was Jumba. They threw out the character development from the original film and created a much flatter character. As for the performance in general— I did not mind Zach Galifianakis’ Human Jumba scenes but man, oh man did I miss David Ogden Stiers in Jumba’s alien form. I wish they had either foregone the star casting here and hired a soundalike, or at least had Galifiankis do the accent.

It’ll come as no surprise to anyone— the OG animation is superior, but this was a fun ride. I teared up at several points— I’m not sure if it was because the film genuinely reached me, or because of my nearly life long connection with these characters. I hope the box office success of this film opens doors for this cast of mostly unknown actors, and I look forward to picking up the 4K release.

EDIT: Wow, did not realize the neighbor character was played by the original voice of Mrs. Hasagawa!

‘I Do Stand By The Decision’: Lilo & Stitch Director Explains Why Gantu Isn’t In The New Movie
https://www.cinemablend.com/interviews/ ... -new-movie
Gantu was one of those things that just didn't work so well in live action. We explored it a bit, but ultimately we had to make the decision. And also I do stand by the decision 'cause I feel like a lot of the things that in trying to ground these characters more and tell a story with a little more emotional depth, especially between the sisters, I feel like you have to free up real estate to allow that breathing room to do those things.
I mean ... most of the aliens didn't work well in live-action, and that didn't stop you guys from making this movie.

I also feel like he's forcing a connection between "We had to drop Gantu" and "the story with the sisters means more this way." Like ... those have absolutely nothing to do with each other, my friend.

Vlad wrote: Sat May 24, 2025 12:28 pm I just saw it. It wasn't bad, there some things that were changed that I did not care for, but all in all, it was a decent remake.

I loved the actresses who played Lilo and Nani, they played their parts really well, and they had great chemistry together. The actor who played David was super funny, I especially loved how he delivered the "You sure that's a dog?" line. Stitch was pretty much the same, and he was super cute throughout the movie. I loved that they kept the entire "Does Stitch have to go in the ship?" moment. When he said "Thank you", I was like "awww". I wasn't too fond of Pleakley at the beginning of the movie, but I began liking him as the movie went along. The Grand councilwoman was pretty much the same as in the animated movie, and I liked how Hannah Woddingham portrayed her (I'm a huge fan of hers). Oh, and Tia Carrere was great as well.

Now on to the things I didn't like - the alien characters didn't look so good in CGI as they did in the animated movie, even though they had the same design, some things were off about them. I also didn't like what they did to Jumba - his character was so awesome in the animation, but turning him into the movie's villain was such a weird thing to do. He wasn't likeable at all, and his relationship with Pleakley wasn't as funny. . I missed his deeper voice and his Russian accent. I also didn't like the neighbor character, even though I really like the actress. Her addition ruined Lilo and Nani's relationship. Also, the ending didn't make sense. If Nani was able to travel through the portal, why couldn't she stay home with Lilo and go through the portal at school?

Also, did anyone else have the impression that the first 40 minutes of the movie felt a bit rushed? It's like they wanted to finish with the introductory scenes for each character really quick, and then move on with the story.

As I said, not a bad adaptation, I'd give it an 8/10.
well, if she had done that, do not think it would look suspicious to anyone else? Especially if they are indeed trying to keep everything involving the aliens a secret? It’s way easier And less attention drawing for Nani To be at school but then able to come back and visit Lilo then staying at home and going there, as it will be a lot of questions from other people about that etc.

I must say, that I’m quite shocked about people not really liking Zach Galifianakis is Jamba, because personally it’s one of the things I LOVE about the movie! :-) I find that he is quite funny, and actually quite nice that he gets to make the role His own, as like my friend pointed out, Certain other characters in the remakes Or perhaps trying too hard to replicate the original such as Daveed Diggs as Sebastian in the little mermaid, even though I personally liked him too. And him being the villain also makes a lot of sense when you consider that he still acts like it and wants to be a villain for most of the franchise, so much so that it literally doesn’t make any sense at all as to how stitch has a glitch and especially the origin of stitch could take place before the TV series when you see his personality and attitude they are compared to the rest of it, which therefore has them both makes sense to actually take place AFTER When you consider his overall character growth and demeanour change compared to the original.

I also absolutely loved Amy Hill’s new character, and found that she actually improved a lot of things on the original, because it actually doesn’t really make a lot of sense of all the struggles are going through for Nani to Allow them to get a dog and to allow Lilo to do what she was doing, and again as others appointed out it very strongly helps emphasize the Ohana theme and connection, and she’s just a very likeable character either way in a very genuine and natural add on :-)

Iger and Johnston pointed out that the success of Lilo & Stitch has been seen throughout the company. It’s fueled viewership of the original 2002 animated film and related content on Disney+, with more than 640 million hours streamed globally; Lilo & Stitch is on track to become the company’s second-largest licensed merchandise franchise this year behind only Mickey Mouse; and Stitch has also been deployed across Disney’s parks and experiences worldwide. A sequel to the film is already in development.

What a fun poster, despite how it felt a little cheaply made as well.

Just a shame the home media covers are hideous. I wish the steelbook would have used the poster of L&S on the hammock at least.
