a franchise for streamer Disney+ that is set in Disney's beloved Magic Kingdom. The first project in the works as part of the so-called Magic Kingdom Universe is The Society of Explorers and Adventurers, which is set in a world where all the themed lands and characters of the Disney parks and classic films actually exist in another reality.
Ronald D. Moore is back at Sony Pictures Television, signing a multi-year overall deal with the independent studio. [...] When he moved to 20th Television in 2020, Moore was attracted by the opportunity to work with the Disney cannon. He developed multiple projects, including a Swiss Family Robinson series reboot and The Society of Explorers and Adventurers, set in the Magic Kingdom Universe, for Disney+ as well as A Court Of Thorns And Roses adaptation for Hulu, neither of which has come to fruition.
The die-hard Disney fan then took stabs at creating a “Magic Kingdom Universe” with The Society of Explorers and Adventurers and Swiss Family Robinson for Disney+, both of which died on the vine. The biggest bummer, however, was Moore’s shot at Sarah J. Maas’ popular A Court of Thorns and Roses book series for Hulu, as sources say he is no longer involved in that adaptation.
Q: Ron Moore started an overall deal with Disney back in 2021 and one of the first projects he took on was The Society of Explorers and Adventurers for Disney+. Where do things stand with that?
Karey Burke: It is also still in development. We just saw a draft of SEA from Ron after he was able to get back to work after the strikes. We hope to be delivering that to Disney Branded Television pretty soon.
