Re: Snow White (Live-Action)

Post by Thumper_93 »

Finally I have my computer and I can write my opinion because from the smartphone is not so comfortable.
I went to the theater last friday to watch it in original version. Rachel sings really beautiful and I didn't want to watch it dubbed.
The beginning of the film is really great. I really liked the song and the chorale scene. I think that it was a great way to present Snow White's Universe.
Snow White's mother death was less emotive that I expected. In Cinderella they did a great job with that. Another thing that I liked was Gal's presentation. It was short but she looked more natural with her hair visible. I think that they could have done a better job with the transition to the Evil Queen's look
The girl that plays Snow as a child was cute. Not much expressive but she was all right after all. Snow White's dad was really handsome btw rotfl
Rachel's performance is all right. This version is not a copy but at least they keep some things of the original's personality. I thought that she was going to be less feminine. The big problem with her character is that the reshoots are really evident. Not only in the hair like I said before but in everything. The make up also changes a lot. Her lips are more colored in some scenes than in others. She has a natural make up in the first scenes and in the ones that were reshooted you can feel that they tried to make her look more cute. The gown also changes al ittle bit. In some scenes it fits perfectly on her and in other scenes you can see that Rachel's is more skinny and the dress bodice doesnt' fix so great on her, specially on her back. This is not very important on the plot but it takes you out of the story because sometimes is really evident.
She really made beautiful music numbers. In my opinion she made a great work.
Gal is not as bad as I expected. I don't understand why people is always complaining about her acting. Her song is a mess. The second song that she sings the one that she sings during her transformation is not as bad but the main one gave the feelings of beeing one song from Descendant's original soundtrack. The look that she wears in the song is the best one because it's the more accurate to the original version.
Jonathan is great. The bandits don't apport much to the plot and in my opinion they could've been removed without problem. Nothing memorable about them.
The dwarfs are not as bad as I thought. You get use to their look. They are not so charsimatic as the original ones but nothing in the movie is actually as charismatic. The only one that made me feel sad was Doppey because the other dwarfs are cruel with him. I really liked that he talked at the end of the movie and the fact that he's the one that's telling the story
The creatures from the forest are cute but the eyes are really big and they gave me the feeling of beeing watching the creatures from the french version of Beauty and the beast released in 2014.
The soundtrack works really great. I think that they did a good choice removig some of the original songs and creating new ones. Sometimes we complain saying that we don't want copies of the original version and I think that we have to recognize them the effort to make something a little bit different here.
The script is not as good as it could have been. Some parts are not neccesary at all and I had the feeling that it's too long. Some of the added scenes rest emotivity to important parts of the film and many others are not as well developed as they should Jonathan's capture doesn't apport much emotion to the scene. He doesn't have much problems to scape. This scene could have been much better and more similar to Phillip's scape from Maleficent castle
In my opinion is enjoyable. You can spend a great afternoon watchin it. It's just another version of this fairytale.
Sorry if my english is not good. I'm not used to write reviews in other languages.

^ Thumper, your English is fine! :)

The morning show DJs on the radio just said "AI Dwarfs" instead of "CGI Dwarfs" when talking about this movie. Oh no, the people listening are going to think Disney used AI.

People said the same about Wish. In my opinion the dwarfs look similar to the characters from Steven Spielberg's Tintin film.

Funny how 2 Spielberg WSS alumnae have presided over 2 Disney megaflops, Wish and Snow White!
Note that WSS was also a megaflop at the box office, if not a critical megaflop.

I know you said you liked Spielberg's WSS but I was wondering if you still liked it even though you came to dislike Rachel Zegler? Does she not ruin the film for you?

I personally always preferred the 1961 classic.

Hi, Farerb!
Yes, I absolutely enjoyed the Spielberg WSS and recommend it to fans of the show and the 1961 classic, which I still prefer to the remake as you do.
I haven’t seen it since Zegler’s offensive remarks about the original SW or her being pro-Hamas and anti-President Trump voters. I’m sure it might affect my future enjoyment of the WSS remake, but I can admit I thought she did a good job and made a fine María. In spite of it all, I don’t have Zegler Derangement Syndrome. I just don’t intend to financially support her career further including my refusal to see this fake SW remake.

This wasn't a good movie.

It started off well enough – the opening song was nice and the introduction of the queen was pretty good. Expanded love interest? Sure! Snow White running through the forest was a fantastic sequence which had strong Suspiria-vibes (full circle moment from the original Suspiria) and it also fooled me into thinking I was in for something special. But then SW reaches the dwarfs' cottage and the movie falters a bit, only to completely lose steam and fall apart once SW goes out to search for her father and meets up with the rebels. From that point on, I was pretty much checked out and just waited for the movie to end.

The second half has some massive structural issues and the script goes all over the place. Once again, Disney's recent penchant for extremely large casts rears its ugly head – the rebels/robbers/whatever are useless and have no bearing on the plot. They should have been cut completely and the movie would have been stronger and tighter for it. There was no chemistry between the leads – I'll chalk this up to casting but the script didn't help. "My father is dead"/"My father may be alive"/"My father is definitely dead" rollercoaster was straight out of a cheap soap opera.

Pacing. In the original story, not just the 1937 movie, the dwarfs come to care for SW because she spends some time with them, and they bond. There's a clear passage of time. Here SW meets the dwarfs, spends the night, helps them clean up the place, and then she decides she'll be on her way out. If there was a place where a montage would have helped support the plot, this was it.

The dwarfs' look took a while to get used to, but once you're accustomed to them looking like polished up potatoes, you don't mind them. I think Doc and Dopey looked the best.

The animals were super cute, but it's like they wandered off the set of a different movie and somehow found their way here. Like, if the opening of Enchanted was CG and not hand-drawn. The choice to make them so cartoony and not realistic was bizarre. Maybe because the forest was enchanted?

Speaking of enchantment and strange plot points, the Queen openly uses magic in this version and nobody finds that weird or frightening. Least of all Snow White who in this version should be smart enough to suspect random strangers who appear out of nowhere and know way too much. Also, during the final confrontation, the Queen seems to forget she has powers and storms off into the castle without even attempting to fight back with more magic.

Probably the only thing from the second half I REALLY liked was the Queen's demise. I got reminded of the ways Disney used to give their villains gruesome deaths, and it was definitely one of the higlights.

Gal was meh. This grandiose role requires a certain dose of camp which all villain actresses so far (Blanchett, Jolie, McCarthy... even Gong Li!) have been able to provide, but she's as flat as a pancake. It's also one of the reasons her song doesn't work – she's adequate as a singer but the loud style of the song doesn't gel with how she portrayed the queen in the rest of the movie. It's like a completely different character. To be fair to her, it could be the fault of how she was directed, but having seen her in other movies, I'm more inclined to think it's just her limited range.

Rachel's Snow White fares better and is a good update on the original, but it's clear she thinks she's in a different movie compared to everyone else. She's very expressive and her eyes do a lot of acting, but her style is very stage-like and she needed stronger supporting cast to play off them. It's no wonder her best scenes are when she's alone or those with the dwarfs.

The Jonathan actor was a non-entity to me. He might as well have been played by a cardboard cutout.

Won't be going back to this one.

It seems like the healthy approach. I can tell you that I'm not a fan of certain actors and actresses, but there are movies they starred in that I still enjoy. A good example is Susan Sarandon in Enchanted.

Thank you for your reply :)

Enjoying certain actors and public personalities was certainly easier (and more fun) before everyone knew their political opinions. I’ll never understand the need to piss off 50% of your audience.

Rachel Zegler hating Trump is actually a good thing

Also she has never been, implied or said anything in relation to Hamas, she hasn't even talked about any type of armed resistance in general

It's funny because Rachel is a very sofa activist, she just said Free Palestine and posted a couple of Instagram stories and now she's suddenly the biggest activist

She was a big problem in the movie, and I don't mean because of her opinions (on the original, on Trump etc), but because her acting was really awful. Which surprised me a lot, because I really enjoyed her performance in West Side Story. And I heard she'll play Evita in the West End production this year. She has talent, that's for sure, that's why I can't understand how she was so bad in this one.

My sister really loved the Dwarfs' look in this one. I just couldn't get used to them, they looked awful.

There was a guy in the theater who said he was rooting for the Queen.    I definitely agree.

Farerb wrote: Sun Mar 23, 2025 2:03 pm Regarding the reshoots:

I think it has been said online, and I tend to agree, that the CGI dwarfs weren't there at the beginning and the bandits were actually supposed to be the "dwarfs" before the backlash. There are seven of them and all of them were useless, I think they had a larger role originally.

I also wonder what was originally planned with the apple and the kiss considering Rachel said that she wasn't going to be saved by him. The kiss scene really feels like an afterthought and anticlimactic. The dwarfs didn't even made the glass coffin, like this entire thing went by so fast that it just didn't really have any weight.
This is not true. The dwarfs were always there from the very beginning. The actors for the dwarfs recorded their lines in early 2022 before filming started in March 2022. The bandits did have a bigger role in Princess Problems, in the true love's kiss scene, and during the final battle, but that all eventually got cut.
I had the same thoughts about the non-funeral. It felt very phoned in, and not at all in line with what they were signaling early on. Though I suppose we should be grateful(?) that we got any True Love's Kiss at all.

It was also in early 2022 that Dinklage made his comments about the dwarfs in Snow White that got everyone up in a furor. Might there be a scenario where the dwarfs had recorded the dialogue, but were then cut after they tried appeasing Dinklage specifically, only to be reinserted after they tried doing this without the dwarfs?

And remind me how we know about all that with the bandits and the dwarfs?

Anyways, I appear to have the opposite impression of most everyone here. I was annoyed by Gadot's interpretation, and I thought Zegler was just fine. Any issues I had with her felt more like a product of this whole movie just being atonal and messy.

She was bad in West Side Story too. And she didn't have chemistry with the male love interest there either. The difference is Spielberg is a good director and good directors can coax better results from otherwise poor or mediocre actors.

I thought Zegler was mostly a serviceable nonentity in both.

I think it's a shame we didn't get renditions of "Some Day...," "I'm Wishing," and "With a Smile and a Song" by her here.

As Kelly Clarkson just said, Rachel Zegler is one of the best actresses of her generation.

And I agree, she did a perfect job in Snow White and West Side Story.

Disney's Divinity wrote: Sun Mar 23, 2025 2:06 pm This article was interesting:

https://deadline.com/2025/03/snow-white ... 236347329/

Mostly highlighted why I always thought it was dumb of them to allow the budget for this one to get large--remakes of the older films don't have the kind of lucrative potential that remakes of the '90s films did. Most of the people who grew up in the '90s were seeing those with their own children out of nostalgia, whereas the older IPs are a different thing altogether. Always thought the best they should be hoping for here would've been around 500 million like Cinderella. A billion like B&tB or Aladdin was never in the cards for this. The "controversies" have little to do with it, since as the article noted, the film performed better in "red" counties. People generally aren't thinking about politics when they choose a movie to watch. Because even though there was a racebend here, the character still looked more or less like SW. Not really the same situation as with TLM where they had a '90s film actually capable of a billion and the lead not having the red hair you associate with that character.

Then again, The Jungle Book did a billion. Not sure how much the Glenn Close Dalmatians did, but apparently enough that they attempted a sequel. Maleficent is more of a twist film, but it's also based on older IP. IDK, I think Dalmatians is unique because the animated film was also huge in the '90s. TJB is the only real exception here... Perhaps that film simply has more broad appeal like TLK for audiences than most of the Walt era?
Perhaps I`m just speculating, but Walt`s version of The Jungle Book was quite successful and is actually given a more frivolous and spunkier tone than Walt`s predecessors, which makes it more appealing to a younger audience. So perhaps it could be a slight reason for why the remake was more successful? Despite how the remake phase was just at it`s infancy at the time and the 2016 remake actually tried to do something new and fresh with the story, as opposed to just remaking the 1967 classic.

They must be really stupid if they thought that this movie was going to be a success when TLM had less controversy and it made them lost money. In the case of TLM the biggest controversy was the election of Halle as Ariel and that made people to deceide to not going to watch it. In this case the cast of Rachel was not the only problem. She's been giving problems during all the production. Her comments were the perfect excuse to be hated by a lot of people. Gal also is hated for some part of the audience because she supports Israel in the conflict against Palestine.
In my opinion they should have stopped all this craziness and they should have released the movie in D+ instead in theaters. Now they are going to have lot of troubles with the box office because it's going to go down and down the following weeks. And that's not their only problems. Mattel must be really angry with them because the dolls are starting to go on sale and the movie was released only one week ago...

It was never going to gross more than The Little Mermaid, but it still could have grossed $400-$500 million if Rachel hadn't angered Disney adults, Jews and Conservatives / Republicans.
