Maybe Pete Docter isn't as keen to replace directors like Lasseter was?

I'm still really looking forward to this film. I trust Pixar so... hopefully it still comes out and will be great.
Yeah. Me too. I believe it will be as it is my most anticipated film of 2025.

A delay gives me more confidence, not less. They need to not let movies get Wish'd. Only the shareholders care about getting these things out on time. The public will watch these when they are ready. Better to let them cook longer if needed.

All that said, I'm not super hyped about this or anything yet.

What does this mean? Has Adrian Molina been replaced as the director? Has Domee Shi been added as a second director? Or is she working on the film in some other capacity?

Hopefully, the middle with her being added as a second director & writer. This could be a situation like Meet the Robinsons where the production is sort of PTSD but turns out a great story in the end.

I'm glad for Domee Shi that she's involved in another film since she's one of the more talented up-and-comers, but I'm not sure if it's a good thing to be attached to this if it ends up underperforming. Well, I have to think she's talented enough to survive if this one does do poorly. I wonder how much she can actually affect the film when it's this far along anyway?

Production delays aside, I’m still looking forward to this one. Concept seems so cute. Lilo and Stitch vibes.

Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian (Burrow) have joined the film as directors. Zoe Saldaña has replaced America Ferrera as Elio's Aunt.

Ahh… last night I had read that Zoe Saldaña was being added to the cast, I didn’t realize America Ferrera was replaced. I enjoy Ferrera and was looking forward to her work in the film.

I think I read that in the original storyline, Ferrera’s character would have some trouble relating to her son. I could see how that could be a tricky thing to handle (but I was interested to see them try!). It’s probably easier to transfer that angst to an aunt (who perhaps has inherited Elio’s custody maybe long term via a patented Disney parental tragedy, or maybe aunty’s just watching Elio over the weekend while running a living dinosaur theme park).

I got the vibe from earlier concept art that Elio might have some effeminate mannerisms, and as a former little boy who pretended to be a Disney Princess all the time, I hope that’s something that stays in the film. Based on Turning Red, I have faith in Shi that she would keep that, but no faith in the executives.

I actually asked Domee Shi and the others at the Pixar booth for the Elio art signing if this aspect of Elio’s character would still be in the final movie, and they gave me an answer that was more along the lines of “Don’t worry, the story itself hasn’t changed too much and the part of Elio’s character that I think I know what you’re referring to is still in there.”

In a recent interview with The Wrap, which also quietly revealed that Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi would be taking over directing duties from Adrian Molina, Docter said the delay was largely due to the actors’ strike. But several of IGN’s sources say it was also due to major story changes, leading to a grind on that film even before many of its artists were moved to work on Inside Out 2. One source who had pleasant experiences on their prior projects reports feeling a marked shift when they were on Elio: “It was rushed work, paranoid work, paranoid leadership, mixed messaging,” the source says. “...You're just working 24/7. And so after awhile, your body just starts breaking down.”

Multiple sources say there’s a particularly low morale among remaining employees, especially as more work on Elio looms. “...Right now, everyone’s on Elio. Things are exactly the same, how they were before. Everybody’s working crazy hours to get Elio fixed.”

I find it a bit confusing with what they mean when they say the work is rushed when the movie was delayed a whole year and a quarter with a new trailer that has finished animation and nothing changing too drastically from the story, at least from how I saw it at D23.

Anyway, regardless, we must make sure that the movie doesn’t fail, especially if it’s great in the end, because if we do, we’ll only be giving way to allow Disney to not let Pixar do anymore original movies when it was a miracle that Elemental broke even to stop that from happening.

Disney and Pixar will always make original films even if movies fail, because they're expecting that one or two original movies become extremely succesful so they can transform them into franchises

Inside Out had to be created in the first place for the sequel to be the biggest movie of 2024

So both studios will keep making originals, the thing is that they will not take risks with their original movies (I mean Disney Animation movies don't take any risk at all)
